TeachingEnglishtoyounglearnerscanbechallenging,especiallywhenitcomestocommunication.Onewaytomakethelearningprocessmoreinteractiveandengagingisthroughtheuseofgames.Inthisteachingplan,wewilldiscussasetofinteractivegamesthatwillhelpstudentspracticeshoppingdialogueinEnglish.

TargetAgeGroup

Thisteachingplanisdesignedforyounglearnersagedbetween4and6yearsoldwhoareatthebeginnerleveloflearningEnglish.

Objectives

Aftercompletingthisteachingplan,studentsshouldbeableto:

UnderstandandusebasicshoppingdialogueinEnglish,includinggreetings,askingforhelpandmakingpurchases.

Engageincommunicativeinteractionswiththeirpeersusingthevocabularyandstructuresintroducedinthelesson.

Activity1:Settingupshop

Insmallgroups,studentswillworktogethertocreatetheirownshopusingafeltboardorfoamboard.Theywillcreateanamefortheirshop,anddrawandcutoutpicturesofitemstheywanttosell.Thisactivitywillencouragecreativity,collaborationandcommunicationinEnglish.

Activity2:Shoppingdialoguerole-play

Studentswillbedividedintopairsorsmallgroupswhereoneofthemwillbetheshopkeeperwhiletheotherspretendtobecustomers.TheaimofthisactivityistopracticebasicshoppingdialogueandtogivethestudentsanopportunitytoengageincommunicativeinteractionsinEnglish.

Activity3:Shoppingmemorygame

Inthisactivity,pairsofstudentswilltaketurnstopickupacardwithapictureofanitemforsaleonitandtomatchitwiththecorrespondingwordcard.Usingmemorygamestocomplimentvocabularylearninghelpsstudentstoimprovetheirrecallanddeveloptheirmemoryskills,whichareimportantforlanguageacquisition.

Activity4:Shoppingsimulationvideo

Usinganinteractivewhiteboardoraprojectorscreen,studentswillbeshownashortvideoofashoppingsimulation.Thevideoshoulddepictasettingwhereacustomerisgreetedbyashopkeeperwhooffershelpwithmakingapurchase.Thevideoisanexcellentwaytocontextualizethepreviousactivitiesanddemonstratehowthelanguageandskillsthatthestudentshavelearnedcanbeappliedinthecontextofareal-lifesituation.

Activity5:Drawingandwritingactivities

Asafollow-up,studentswillbegivenaworksheetwithpicturesofvariousitemsforsalealongwithawordbankforcorrespondingvocabularyinEnglish.Thestudentswillbeencouragedtocompletetheworksheetbydrawingapictureofanitem,writingwordstodescribeitandansweringsimplequestionsrelatedtoit.Thiswritingactivityhelpsstudentstodeveloptheirspeaking,listeningandwritingskillswhileusingthevocabularyitemsintroducedinthepreviousactivities.
