Figure三-一Unit三Unit三Whenmanufacturersbringarobotintoaworkspace,itisimportantthatworkersknowhowtooperatetherobot,andhowtooperatearounditsafely.Workspacesneedtobeclearlymarked,soeachofyourworkersknowswhatfloorspaceisoutofboundswhentherobotisoperating.Manytimes,ashortsafetytrainingsessionisnecessaryandmakessurethatworkersareawareoftherobot.Whilearobotmayseemlikeitis"dangerous",inreality,arobotthathasthesafetyfeaturesavailableisnotonlysafe,butitwillalsokeepworkerssafe.However,therearemanyapplicationsthatcanbeharmfultothehealthofworkers.Someoftheseapplicationsincludepainting,coating,fiberglasscutting,deburring,andgrinding.Whenworkersaretooclosetotheseapplications,theycaninhaleharmfulfumesorparticlesthatcanaffectthebrain,lungs,eyes,andskin.Robotsdonothavethesesamesafetyissues.Witharoboticsysteminplace,yourworkerswillbetoofarfromtheworkzonetobeaffectedbytheseissues.Robotshelpmanufacturersstaveoffproductionslowdownorinterruptionduetoinjuryorillness.Unit三Areyouinterestedinlearningmoreabouthowrobotscanhelpthesafetylevelinyourshop?TheOccupationalSafetyandHealthAdministrationsetsguidelinesandstandardsthatshouldbepracticedtokeepemployeessafe.Forrobotics,OSHAhassetforthnationalstandardsandregulationsrelatedtorobotics.Robotsaregenerallyusedtoperformunsafe,hazardous,highlyrepetitive,orunpleasanttasks.Studiesindicatethatmanyrobotaccidentsoccurduringnon-routineoperatingconditions,suchasprogramming,maintenance,testing,setup,oradjustment.Ifthehumanworkerisintroducedintotherobot’sworkingarea,unintendedoperationscouldresultinaninjury.Theuseofroboticscanalsohavepotentialmechanicalhazards.Thesedangerscouldincludeworkerscollidingwithequipment,beingcrushedortrappedbyequipment,orbeinginjuredbyfallingequipmentduetouncertainmovementsorprogramchanges,orponentfailures.Iftheponentsrelatedwiththerobotortheirpowersourcesexperienceamechanicalfailure,injurycouldresultin.
