(960-1279),theChineserenowned(著名)poetSuDongpowroteapoemtopraisetheWestLakeandcomparedittoXizi,aChineselegendarybeauty.Sincethen,theWestLakehasanotherelegantnameXiziLake.AndasitliesinthewestofHangzhou,itisusuallycalledtheWestLake.TheWestLakeisalsofamousforitshistoricalflavorwithnumerouscelebrities.NationalheroesYueFei,YuQian,ZhangRuoshuiandQiuJinwereallburinedalongtheWestLake,leavingtheirillustriousnamesandnoblespiritsinthegreenhillsandbluewaters.Moreover,manyancientpoetsandartists,suchasBaiJuyi,SuDongpo,LiuYongandPanTianshou,hadalsoleftcountlessfamouswritings.History

OneofthemajorattractionsinWestLake:ThreePoolsMirroringtheMoonislandInmiddleoftheTangDynastyZhenyuanera(785-804),poetBaiJuyicametoHangzhouasgovernor.Alreadyanaccomplishedpoet,hisdeedsatHangzhoumadehimagreatgovernor.HerealisedthatthefarmlandnearbydependedonthewaterofWestLake,butduetonegligenceofformergovernors,theolddykehadcollapsed,thewaterlevelofWestLakedriedout,andthelocalfarmerssufferedseveredrought.Heorderedtheconstructionofastrongerandtallerdyke,withadamtocontroltheflowofwater,andthussolvedthedroughtproblem.ThelivelihoodoflocalpeopleofHangzhouimprovedoverthefollowingyears.NowthatBaiJujihadmoreleisuretimetoenjoythebeautyofWestLake,hevisitedWestLakealmosteveryday.HeorderedtheconstructionofacausewayconnectingtheBrokenBridgewiththeSolitaryHill,tofacilitatewalkingonfoot,insteadofdependingonboat.Thenheplantedpeachtreesandwillowstreesalongthedyke,makingitabeautifullandmarkofWestLake.ThiscausewaywaslaternamedBaiDiCausewayinBaiJuyi'shonour.

Overtwohundredyearslater,inthebeginningofSongDynasty'sYuanyouera(1086-1094),anothergreatpoet,SuShi(SuDongpo),cametoHangzhouasgovernor.Bythattime,thefarmerssuffereddroughtagain,duetoovergrowthoftheweedsatthebottomofthelakecloggingtheirrigationducts.Heordereddredgingofthelakeandpiledupallthemudintoanothercauseway,inthestyleofBaiCauseway,butmuchwiderandnearlythreetimesaslong,healsoplantedwillowtreesalongitsbanks.ThiscausewaywaslaternamedafterhimastheSuCauseway.Therearesixbridgesalongthe2.6kmSuCauseway."SpringDawnontheSuCauseway"isoneofTheattractionsoattheWestLake.TheBaiCausewaywasnamedafterBaiJuyi,afamouspoetinTangDynasty,whofellintodisfavorinthecapitalandwassentheretoserveasagovernorin822~824A.D.Hesawtotheconstructionofthecauseway,whichwascomposedofthesiltdredgedfromthelake.Atthenorthendofthecausewayisthewell-knownBrokenBridge(斷橋),sonamedbecausethebridgelooksartisticallybrokenindistancewhenwintersnowsfirstmeltonthebridge.AccordingtoTheTaleofWhiteSnake,thiswastheveryplacewheretheheroandheroinemetandfellinlove,andlaterongotreunitedaftermanyhardshipsanddifficulties.AtthewestendofthecausewayistheSolitaryIslandthatthechina’smosttraveledemperorsofthelastdynasty,Kangxi(1662-1723A.D.)andQianlong(1736~1795A.D.)stayedassightseersafteralongdistancesailingfromBeijing,throughtheGrandCanaltoHangzhou.Areviewingplatformwasbuiltonthesoutherntipoftheislandfortheemperorstowatchthesunriseandthemoonlight.EmperorQianlongnamedtheplaceTheAutumnMoononaCalmLake(平湖秋月).TodaymanypeoplearesippingtheDragonWellteaandwatchingthesameviewonthisplatformastheemperorsdid.TheSuCauseway(Sudi)isthreetimesaslongastheBaiCauseway.ThisgreatconnectsthenorthandsouthshoresalongthewesternsideofWestLake.Linedwithweepingwillowtreesandpeachflowers,crossedbysixarchedstonebridges,theSuCausewayisalandscapedrawnbythepainterandcomposedbythepoet.ThiscausewayisnamedafterthefamouspoetSuTungpo(1036~1101A.D.),whowassentheretoworkasthegovernor.Hehad200000workersdredgethelakeandmakethecausewaywiththedredgedsilt.SuwroteapoemtonamethelakeafteranastoundingbeautynamedXizi(西施).Thepoemgoes,“Watershimmeringonashinyday,mountainsclothedinthemistyrain,WestLakeisforevercharminglikeXizi,whetherdressedgailyorplain.”FromtheSuCausewaythevisitorscangetthebestviewoftheThreePoolsMirroringtheMoon(三潭印月),whichwasanothercreationofthepoet-governorSuTungpo.ItisadefiningmonumentofWestLake.Therearethreewaterpagodas,floatingonthewaters,fastenedtothebedofthelake.Eachpagodaisabout6feethigh,withfivebefourmoonsshimmeringonthewaters,whichiseffectedbytheopeningsofthethreefloatingpagodas.ThefamousWestLakeislikeabrilliantpearlembeddedinthebeautifulandfertileshoresoftheEastChinaSeanearthemouthoftheHangzhouBay.ThefamousItaliantravelerMarcoPolowassoimpressedbythebeautyofHangzhouthathedescribeditas“themostfascinatingcityintheworldwhereonefeelsthatoneisinparadise.”Asitisbeautifulalltheyearround,theWestLakewascomparedbySuDongpo,acelebratedpoetoftheSongDynasty,toabeauty“whoisalwayscharmingineitherlightorheavymakeup.”WestLakeinCultureClassicalChinesebuildingsinsidetheWestLakeTheWestLakeissaidtobetheincarnationofXiShi,oneoftheFourBeautiesofancientChina.Hence,sinceancienttimes,theWestLakewasassociatedwithalargenumberofromaticpoets,profoundphilosophers,nationalheroesandheroines.EasternJinDynastyphilosopherGeHongpracticedTaoismintheGeMountain,andwrotehisgreatphilosophicalwork:BaoPuZhi(抱樸子);TangDynastypoetLuoBinwangreclusedinLingyinTemple.TangDynastypoet-governorBaiJuyibuiltthefirstcauseway,whichtheBaiCauseway.;SongDynastypoet-governorSuDongpo,dredgedthelakeandbuiltuptheSuCauseway,madeitintoanotherbeautifullandmarkofWestLake.Healsoinventedaspecialrecipeforpreparingpork:theDongpoPork.DongpoPorkisonthemenuofeveryrestaurantinHangzhou.SongDynastynationalheroYueFeiwasburiedneartheWestLake.LotusintheBreezeattheWindingCourtyardThegreatMingDynastyessayistZhangDai,wroteanumbergreatessaysabouttheWestLakeinReminiscenceandDreamofTao'an(陶庵夢憶),andawholebook:SearchforWestLakeinDreams(西湖夢尋).TheWestLakehasbeenfamousforitsexquisitebeautyformorethanonethousandyears.Hangzhouwillbethesiteforthe2006WorldLeisureExpo.SceneryCenteringaroundtheWestLake,thescenicareaisanationalscenicareawithatotalcoverof59squarekilometers.Thereareover60Chinesenational,provincialandmunicipalculturalrelicprotectionsitesandover100scenicareas.Themainattractionsinclude:TenscenesoftheWestLake,TenNewScenesoftheWestLake;LingyinTemple,Tiger-runningSpringandsoon.TheLingyinMonastery(靈隱寺)TheLingyinMonastery,ortheMonasteryofSoul'sRetreat,isafamoushistoricalsiteoftheWestLake.HereexiststheLingyinMonastery,afamousancienttempleinChina,infrontofwhichthereareFeilaiPeak,ColdSpring,LonghongCaveandpreciousrockcaveartsandqueerandvariednaturalcavesandgullies.Tiger-runningSpring(虎跑泉)Thelegendgoesthattwotightsranthereandmadeaholewhereaspringgushedout.TheLongjingTeaandtheTiger-runningSpringwaterarealwaysreputedasthe"TwoWondersoftheWestLake".Thelakeisdividedinto3partsbythecausewaysofSūDī(蘇堤),BáiDī(白堤).Scenicandpoetic,bothofthemareidealstretchertowalkonWestLake.Therearenumeroustemples,pagodas,gardens,andartificialislandswithinthelake.Withripplesonthewater’ssurfaceandthickly-woodedhillsdottedbyexquisitepavilionsonitsfoursides,theWestLakeisoneofChina’sbestknownscenicspots.AcollectionoftenscenicviewsformedduringtheSouthernSongDynasty,theyaredistributedaroundandwithinthelake,andservetoshowthecharmsoftheWestLake.Eachsceneisunique,andwhentakentogether,aresaidtopresenttheessenceofWestLakescenery,andformthecoreofanyWestLaketour.Visitorstothelakecanplantospendtheirtimeviewingthe"TenScenesoftheWestLake".

1、ThefirstoneisSpringDawnatSuCauseway(蘇堤春曉).Itisathinstripoflandnearlythreekilometerslongcoveredwithpeachandweepingwillowtrees.Inspring,withthelakesideanddewsparkling(閃閃發(fā)光的)inthemorning,birdscheerfullychirpingamongswayingwillowbranches,thescentofpeachblossomswaftingthroughtheair,you'llquestionwhetheryou'reinthemidstofparadise.2、ThesecondoneisBreeze-ruffledLotusatQuyuanGarden(曲院風(fēng)荷)ThistypicalWestLakescenehasearneditsfamesincetheSouthernSongDynasty,whenthelakesideareawithanabundantgrowthoflotus(荷花)offitsshoreswasknownasCrookedCourtyard,andwasthelocationofabrewery(啤酒廠).

Peoplesaidthesmelloflotusflowersandwineblendedbythecoollakebreezeswasintoxicating(醉人的).

Thereareplentyoflotusplantsstillbloomoffitsshores.

Theystandgracefullyerectinthelake,asiftheyknewtheyhadvisitorscomingtoadmiretheirbeauty.3、ThethirdoneisAutumnMoonovertheCalmLake(平湖秋月)AtthewesternendofBaiCausewayislocatedalakesideparkwhichhousesastonetabletbearingtheetched(鑿刻)calligraphyofEmperorKangxioftheQingDynasty,whichreads:"AutumnMoononCalmLake".

Thelakeisaspecialplacetoappreciatethemoonandtheeffectofmoonlightontheland.

Themoonseemsespeciallybrightoverthewaters.

Thehillslookpurplishbathedinthemoonlight.

ThebesttimefornighttimeviewingisonMid-AutumnDay.4、ThefourthoneisMeltingSnowontheBrokenBridge.(斷橋殘雪)Itismostromanticsceneofthetenmust-see.Thestone-archedBrokenBridgeiswherethecharactersofafamousChinesefolktale,XuXianandabeautifulgirlBaisuzhen,whoisactuallyawhitesnakeandnamed,firstmetandfellinlovewitheachother.Afterasnowfall,whenthesnowonthemoreexposedsidehasmelted(融化),withtheshaded(遮蔽住、陰影)sideremainingwhite,itlooksasifalongwhitebelthasbeenrippedapartonthebridge,thusearningthename"MeltingSnowontheBrokenBridge".5、ThefifthoneisViewingFishatFlowerPond(花港觀魚).FlowerPondParkoccupiesanareaoftwenty-onehectaresonapeninsulainthesouthwestcornerofthelake.InitsheartistheRedFishPond,wherepeoplecanrelaxtothesightofbrightlycolorfulfishswimmingaroundandtothebriskmelody(旋律)ofbirdsong.Tostaywithnatureisahighlyenjoyableexperience.6、ThesixthoneisOriolesSingingintheWillows(柳浪聞鶯).

AnimperialgardenbuiltupintheSouthernSongDynasty.Nowtheonce-imperialgardenhasbeenturnedintoaparkopentoall.Featuringgreenwillowsandsingingorioles(黃鸝),therearelawns,pavilions,andbridgesthatareveryimpressive,aswell.7、TheseventhoneisThreePoolsMirroringtheMoon(三潭印月).JustoffthesouthernshoreoftheIslandofLittleOceans(小瀛洲)standthreesmallstonepagodasthatseemtofloatonthewater.

Eachabout2metershigh,whencandlesareplacedinsideonmoonlitnights,theeffectisof4moonsdancingontheshimmering(閃光)nightwaters.

ThesceneisespeciallymagicalwhenthegiantglowingmoononthenightofMid-AutumnDayisoverhead.8、TheeighthoneisEveningBellRingingatNanpingHill(南屏晚鐘).NanpingMountainstretchesalongthesouthernbankoftheLake.Atdusk,withthesunslowlydriftingintotheLakeonthewest,ahugebellatJingxiTemple,willringitsfarewelltothelastsunbeamoftheday.Withtheprolongedbell
