文學批評無用論

讀最近一期的《文學評論》,里面有幾篇關于“紅學”的文章,引起了我

的注意。有的作者既反省,又批判。有的作者從困境中找出路。有的作

者慨嘆,“紅學”出危機。如此等等,煞是熱鬧。文章的論點都非常精

彩,很有啟發(fā)。但是,我卻忽然想到了一個怪問題:這樣的“紅學”有用

處嗎?對紅學家本身,對在大學里和研究所里從事文學理論研究的人,

當然有用。但是對廣大的《紅樓夢》的讀者呢?我看是沒有用處。

《紅樓夢》問世二百年以來,通過漢文原文和各種譯文讀過本書的人,

無慮多少個億。這樣多的讀者哪一個是先看批評家的文章,然后再讓批

評家牽著鼻子走,按圖索驥地去讀原作呢?我看是絕無僅有。一切文學

作品,特別是像《紅樓夢》這樣偉大的作品,內容異常地豐富,涉及到

的社會層面異常地多,簡直像是一個寶山,一座迷宮。而讀者群就更為

復雜,不同的家庭背景,不同的社會經歷,不同的民族,不同的國家,

不同的文化傳統(tǒng),不同的心理素質,不同的年齡,不同的性別,不同的

職業(yè),不同的愛好——還可以這樣“不同”下去,就此打住——,他們來

讀《紅樓夢》,會各就自己的特點,欣賞《紅樓夢》中的某一個方面,

受到鼓舞,受到啟發(fā),引起了喜愛;也可能受到打擊,引起了憎惡,總

之是千差萬別。他們不管“紅學家”究竟議論些什么,只是讀下去,讀下

學院之前,我一直以為自己生來就是丹青妙手,不料第一學期就被某位

教授鄭重告知:于繪畫你毫無天分,不如重新考慮、定位自己的藝術追

求吧。

我從小就對時裝素描情有獨鐘,無法割舍。于是我請求教授指點迷津:

我該怎么做才能繼續(xù)攻讀時裝插圖專業(yè)?教授毫不遲疑作答:“畫!我

們要做的就是畫、畫、畫。什么都要畫。無論在什么時候,在什么地

方,都要不停地畫?!?/p>

我從此照做不誤。

我不停地畫,用完了一本又一本的速寫本。我畫每個朋友,畫公寓房

間,畫自助洗衣店;我畫自己的貓,自己的帽,還畫公共汽車或火車上

各種各樣的臉孔。我臨摹照片,或憑記憶或想象作畫,但大多素材還是

源于生活。繪畫直接取材于生活極具挑戰(zhàn)性,但能更好地提高畫技和觀

察能力。

Theprocessalsoworkstheotherway,however:aswellasthesocialsituation
