Offshoretransshipmenttrade,alsoknownasoffshoretransfertradeoroffshorediversiontrade,isaformofinternationaltradeinwhichgoodsareshippedtoanintermediarydestination,typicallyataxhavenoralow-taxjurisdiction,beforebeingshippedtotheirfinaldestination.Thispracticeiscommonlyusedbymultinationalcorporationstotakeadvantageoftaxincentives,minimizecosts,andavoidtradebarriers.

Theconceptofoffshoretransshipmenttradeinvolvesseveralkeyelements.First,goodsaretypicallymanufacturedorsourcedfromonecountryandthenshippedtoanintermediarydestination.Thisintermediarydestinationisoftenataxhavenoralow-taxjurisdictionthatoffersfavorabletaxpoliciesandtradeincentives.Fromthere,thegoodsarere-packagedorre-labeledandshippedtotheirfinaldestination,whichisoftenahigher-taxjurisdictionoracountrywithtradebarriers.

However,itisimportanttonotethatoffshoretransshipmenttradehasbeenthesubjectofcontroversyandcriticism.Criticsarguethatitencouragestaxavoidanceandunderminesnationaltaxsystems.Bydivertingprofitsthroughtaxhavens,multinationalcorporationsareseenasdeprivingcountriesofmuch-neededtaxrevenue,especiallyindevelopingcountries.Moreover,offshoretransshipmenttradecanalsocontributetounfaircompetitionbyallowingcompaniestogainanunfairadvantageoverdomesticproducerswhoaresubjecttohighertaxesandstricterregulations.
