ThespreadofWesterneatinghabitsaroundtheworldisbadforhumanhealthandtheenvironment.ThesefindingscomefromanewreportinthejournalNature.
DavidTillman,aprofessorofecologyattheUniversityofMinnesota,America,examinedinformationfrom100countriestoidentifywhatpeopleateandhowdietaffectedhealth.Henotedamovementbeginninginthe1960s.Hefoundthatasnationsindustrialized,populationincreasedandearningsrose,morepeoplebegantoadoptwhathasbeencalledtheWesterndiet.
TheWesterndietishighinsugar,fat,oilandmeat.Byeatingthesefoods,peoplebegantogetfatterandsicker.DavidTillmansaysoverweightpeopleareatgreaterriskofnon-infectiousdiseaseslikediabetes(糖尿病)andheartdisease.
Unfortunately,whenpeoplebecomeindustrialized,iftheyadoptthisWesterndiet,theyaregoingtohavethesehealthproblems,especiallyindevelopingcountriesinAsia.Chinaisanexamplewherethenumberofdiabetescaseshasbeenjumpingfromlessthanonepercentto10percentofthepopulationasitbegantoindustrializeovera20-yearperiod.Andthatishappeningallacrosstheworld,inNigeriaandsoon.
And,adietbadforhumanbeingsisalsobadfortheenvironment.Astheworld’spopulationgrows,moreforestsandtropicalareaswillbecomefarmlandforcropsorgrasslandsforcattle.Wearelikelytohavemoregreenhousegasinthefuturefromagriculturethanthatcomingoutofallformsoftransportationrightnow.

Therearealsomanystudieswhichseemtorelateastateofobesity(肥胖)toskippingbreakfast.Infact,itleadsmanyhealthexpertstoconcludethatahealthybreakfastnotonlyregulatesbutalsolosesweight.InaU.S.study,50,000peoplewereobservedoversevenyears,andthosewhoateahealthybreakfastwerefoundtohavealowerBMI,whichseemstosuggestthatbreakfastmayindeedhelppeoplemaintainahealthyweight.
Butitmightnotbeassimpleasthat.Someexperts,likeAlexandraJohnstone,professoroftheUniversityofAberdeen,suggestthosewhoskipbreakfastmightbelessawareofhealthydiets,andpeoplewhoeatbreakfastmighthaveahealthierlifestyleoverall—exercisingandnotsmoking,forexample.Andwiththepopularityofintermittent(間歇的)fastingtoloseweight,theremayalsobesomebenefitstoskippingbreakfast.Intermittentfastingcanimprovebloodsugarcontrol,insulinsensitivity,andlowerbloodpressure.
So,whilebreakfasthasitsbenefits,itmightnotbethemostimportantmeal.Itseemsthatahealthylifestylewithabalanceddietmightbemoreimportantforusthanjustonesinglemeal.

“OverweightinteenagersisabigprobleminNorthAmerica,”shesays.Thenumberofoverweightkidshasgrownoverthepast30years.SoGariepydecidedtohomeinontheimpact(影響)ofschoolstarttimes.
Herteamcollectedstarttimesfor362Canadianschools.Thentheyaskedstudentsatthoseschoolstogivetheirheightandweight.Inall,theycollecteddatafromnearly30,00010to18-year-olds.Among6thto10thgraders,thosewhostartedschoolearlierwerelikelytobeslightlyheavierfortheirheight.Every10-minutedelayinschoolstarttimewasconnected,onaverage,withalightlylowerweightamongstudentswhowerethesamesex,ageandheight.However,thedifferenceisslight.Healthyeatingandgettingenoughexercisewillplayabiggerroleinkeepingahealthyweight.
Becausethestudycomparedkidswhoalreadystartedschoolatdifferenttimesofday,it’snotclearthatchangingschoolstarttimewouldhelpheavierkidsloseweight.Toknowforsure,researcherswouldwanttocomparethesamekidsbeforeandafterchangingtoalaterschoolstarttime.

Fewkidsinthesurveymettheguidelinesforphysicalactivitythatraisestheheartrateandmakesthembreatheharder.Overall,about25%saidtheygotanhourofthatkindofviolentexerciseeveryday.Kidsalsoreportedonwhichactivitiestheydidmostoftenoutsideoftheschoolgymclass--basketballforboysandrunningforgirls.
Thestudyfoundthatobese(肥胖的)teenswerelessactivethannormal-weightgirlsandboys.Overweightgirlswereslightlylessactivethannormal-weightgirls,butlevelsweresimilaramongoverweightandnormal-weightboys.Thestudyalsosaidthattheoverallobesityrateforchildrenaged2to19is17%,orabout12.5millionkids.

Centuriesoftreegrowthhavecoveredthepyramidsandreligiousbuildings,whichprovidesomeofthefinestexamplesoftheearlypartoftheMayancivilization(瑪雅文明).Butthisareaisindangerfromrobbersandpeoplecuttingtreesillegally.Also,overthepasttenyears,over70%ofthenaturalenvironmentintheareahasbeendestroyedbyfires.
