(1871-1945)1Life:1.DreiserwasborninIndiana,theninthchildofGerman-speakingparents.2.Hischildhoodwasspentinextremepoverty.3.AftersomemonthsatIndianaUniversity,hebecameareporterontheChicagoGlobebeforearrivinginNewYorkin1894.4.Hisfirstnovel,SisterCarrie,wasrejectedbecauseofhisrelentlesshonestyinpresentingthetruenatureofAmericanlife.5.Theyoungauthorfeltsodepressedby“adecade’sdelay”—inthewordsofLarzerZiff—insocialrecognitionthathewassaidtohavewalkedbytheEastRiverattheturnofthecentury,seriouslycommittingsuicide.Life:1.DreiserwasborninIn26.Hefacedeveryformofattackthataseriousartistcouldencountermisunderstanding,misrepresentation,artisticisolationandcommercialseduction.Buthesurvivedtoleadtherebellionofthe1900s.7.DreiserdiedofheartfailureonDecember28,1945,beforecompletingthelastchapterofTheStoic.8.DreiserwasburiedinHollywood'sForestLawnCemeteryonJanuary3,1946.
