murkydepthsuntilitwasnolongervisible.Ithoughtaboutjumpingintosaveit,butIknewthe

waterwouldbecold,Iwouldn'tbeabletoseethephoneduetopoorvisibility,andIdidn'trelish

rakingmyhandsthroughthemucktryingtofeelforit.Iknewthatthephonemusthavesunkat

leastfourtofivefeetbeforeithitbottom,andthenitwouldhavesettledintoafootormoreof

muckysilt.

IdecidedIshouldjustcontinuetoputmyboatupontheliftandthenvisittheVerizonstore

togetanewphone.Afterall,I'dbeentoldthatmydatawasbeingbackedup,soIshouldbeable

toretrievealltheinfothatwasonmynowwaterloggedphone.

WhenIgottothestore,IwastoldthatgettinganewphonewouldnotbeaproblembecauseI

hadinsurance,butthattheonlydatatheybackedupwasmycontactsandvoicemail.Myphotos

andvideoswerelostforever,astheyresidedontheSIMcardthatwasinthesunkenphone.Unless

Ihadbackedthemuponmycomputer,theyweregone.

Ihadn'tbackedthemup,andwhentherealitysankin,Iburstoutcrying.Therewerepictures

andvideosonmyphoneofmysongoingthroughbasictrainingandofothervisitsIhadhadwith

himatFt.BraggbeforehehadbeendeployedtoAfghanistan.Thesewerepicturesandvideosthat

couldneverbereplaced.ItfeltasifIwerelosingmysonalloveragain.

Iknowthesalesmanfelthorrible,andIcouldseethathewasnotsurewhattodowiththis

gsiericalwomanwhowashavingatotalfncitdown.HeknewthatIhad,justafewmonthsago,

buriedmyson.

“Iamsosorry,“hesaid,"Ireallydon'tknowofanyonewhohaseverbeenabletorecover

Afteraboutthree-quartersofthemuckhadleakedout,IthoughtIsawthecomerofabright

bluephonecase.Itwasamiracle.Withjustonescoop,Ihadmyphone.Unbelievable.Iquickly

swungthenetaroundtomymother,whowasalsostandingthereinshock.Shegrabbedthephone

fromthenetandstartedtodryitoffwithatowel.

Ithrewdownthenetandboundedupthedockstairs.Grabbingthephonefrommymother's
