IntheHimalayas,theGangotriGlacier,oneofIndia'slargest,isentitledtoanevenmoredubiousdistinction.RecentstudiesrevealthattheGangotri,whichformsamassoficeabout18mileslong,isretreatingatarateofmorethan100feetayear.ButaccordingtogovernmentofficialsandenvironmentalgroupslikeGreenpeace,verylittlehasbeendoneinthewayofarigorousscientificstudy.Scientistsaremonitoringglacialmeltingononlyahandfulofthe7,000glaciersthatcovertheIndianHimalayas.

Whileicereflectsthesun'srays,lakewaterabsorbsandtransmitsheatmoreefficientlytotheunderlyingice,kickingoffafeedbackthatcreatesfurthermelting.Andatsucharapidretreat,agradualincreaseindroughts,flashfloods,andlandslidesarenottheonlyissuetoworryabout,sayenvironmentalists.Glacierchangesinthenext100yearscouldsignificantlyaffectagriculture,watersupplies,hydroelectricpower,transportation,mining,coastlines,andecologicalhabitats.Justwhen
