Therearemanystylesofblues,butthedistinctionofimportancetoHughesisbetweenthegenresreferredtoas“folkblues”and“classicblues.”Folkbluesandclassicbluesaredistinguishedfromoneanotherbydifferencesinperformers(localtalentsversustouringprofessionals),patronage(localcommunityversusmassaudience),creation(improvisedversuscomposed),andtransmission(oralversuswritten).IthasbeenacommonplaceamongcriticsthatHughesadoptedtheclassicbluesastheprimarymodelforhisbluespoetry,andthathewriteshisbestbluespoetrywhenhetriesleasttoimitatethefolkblues.Inthisview,Hughes’attemptstoimitatethefolkbluesaretooself-conscious,toodeterminedtoromanticizetheAfricanAmericanexperience,toointentonreproducingwhathetakestobethequainthumorandnavesimplicityofthefolkbluestobesuccessful.
