Introduction
NVMExpresstechnologyisdrivingthenextgenerationofSSDsfordatacenters.NVMe?SSDsarenotlimitedbylegacyformfactorsorprotocols,andtheycanbetteraddresstheneedsofserversandstorageinenterpriseandhyperscaledatacenters.WiththevariedanddedicatedusecasesforNVMeSSDs,therearetwoclassificationsthatgenerallydefineandsegmenttheseclasses:Enterpriseand
DataCenter.
ThiswhitepaperdescribesusecasesforNVMeSSDsusedinenterpriseservers,enterprisestorage,lowlatencySSD,datacenter/hyperscaleservers,anddatacenter/hyperscalestorageenvironments.Eachoftheseusecaseshasdistinctrequirementsandapplicationenvironments,whicharecoveredinrequirementsforformfactors,power,performance,latency,endurance,capacity,management,andfeatures.Therewillalwaysbeexceptionstotheseguidelines,butthesearegenerallyfitprofilesforNVMeSSDclassification

HyperscalersarenowmovingtodeployingJBOF/EBOFsystemswithdrivesnetworkattachedtothehost,creatingadisaggregatedcompute,storageandnetworkenvironment.Thisallowsthestorageandservercapacitiestoscaleseparately.ITalsoimprovesdensity.Thesystemsoftwarethatprovidesstorageisevolvinginthisdirectionaswell.
