fortablewiththeirbodyimage,feelingunderallkindsofpressuresbecausetheyarejudgedbyhowtheylook.Almostallofthepageantvictorsarewaferthin,reinforcingthemessagethatthinequalsbeautiful.Thisignoresthefactthatmenandwomencomeinallsizesandshapes.Inacountrywhereupto60%ofyoungwomenareonadietatanyonetimeand70%ofschoolgirlssaytheywanttoloseweight,despitethefactthatmosthaveanormalBMI,suchmessagesareprofoundlyhazardoustothementalhealthofyoungAustralians.TherehasbeenanincreaseininterestinbeautypageantsinAustralia,whichsparkedadebate,whileinthepastfewdecades,Australiahastakenmorethanafewfalteringstepstowardtreatingwomenwithdignityandrespect,andwhilealmostallofthepageantvictorsarethin,butitignoresthecommonfeaturesbetweenmenandwomen.Compulsoryvotingisoftensuggestedasasolutiontotheproblemofdecliningturnout.Buthowareindividualsandcountriesaffectedbycompulsoryvotingbeyondboostingelectoralparticipation?ShaneSinghinvestigatesthesocial,economic,andpoliticalconsequencesofcompellingcitizenstovote.Therehasbeenalotofdiscussionaboutcompulsoryvotingthesedays.IntheUnitedKingdom,inparticular,asvoterturnoutrateshavedeclined,manycommentatorsandpoliticianshavebegunadvocatingformandatoryelectoralparticipation.Thoseinfavorofcompulsoryvotingoftenadducetheimportanceofparticipationamongallsegmentsofsociety.Citizensofdemocraciesareforcedtodomanythingsintheinterestofthepublicgood,theymaintain,includingservingonjuriesandeducatingtheirchildren,andfullparticipationservesthecountryasawhole.Thoseopposedtocompulsoryvotingoftenarguethat,fromademocratictheory,therighttovoteimplicitlyincludesarightnottovote.Sucharightofabstention,theyargue,ismoreimportantthananysocietalgoodthat
