DynastytodayinthefutureInancienttimes,silkfromChinafounditswayoverlandtoIndia,theMiddleEast,andRome,alongwhatbecameknownastheSilkRoad.AtradingrouteacrosstheseawasalsoextendedalongthecoastsoftheIndianOcean,centeredaroundCeylon(nowSriLanka).Here,merchantsfromChinaandmanyotherplacesmettonegotiatetradedeals,whichalsoledtomoreawarenessofeachother’scultures.Overthecenturies,furthertradingallowedmoreexplorationoftheregionstothewestofChina,asrecordedinDuHuan’sRecordofMyTravelsintheeighthcentury.TimeOrderIdentifyingthestructureofthepassageLater,theMingDynastyfurtherdevelopedrelationswiththeseregions.Between1405and1433,sevenlargefleetssailedwestonvoyagesoftradeandexploration.Thesefleetswereasighttobeholdandwereinaleagueoftheirownatthattime.UnderthecommandofZhengHe,theysetsailfromtheSouthChinaSeaacrosstheIndianOceantothemouthoftheRedSea,andthentotheeastcoastofAfrica.Africanroyalfamiliessentgiftssuchasgiraffesasgesturesoffriendshipinreturnforgold,silk,andspices.AlthoughChinawithdrewfromfurtherexpeditionsafter1433,theselandandsearoutesremainedactivechannelsbetweenotherculturesforcenturies.TimeOrderIdentifyingthestructureofthepassage
