andWritingChapter4-------Activities1:ⅠWhatCanANewsConferencedo?Anewsconferenceorpressconferenceisamediaeventinwhichnewsmakersinvitejournaliststohearthemspeakand,mostoften,askquestions.Ajointpressconferenceinsteadisheldbetweentwoormoretalkingsides.Inanewsconference,oneormorespeakersmaymakeastatement,whichmaybefollowedbyquestionsfromreporters.Sometimesonlyquestioningoccurs;sometimesthereisastatementwithnoquestionspermitted.Amediaeventatwhichnostatementsaremade,andnoquestionsallowed,iscalledaphotoopportunity.Agovernmentmaywishtoopentheirproceedingsforthemediatowitnessevents,suchasthepassingofapieceoflegislationfromthegovernmentinparliamenttothesenate,viamediaavailability.IntheUnitedStatesthepressandpoliticianshavetraditionallyenjoyedanadversarialrelationship.Whilepoliticalpressconferencesareutilizedtoprovideinformationtothepublic,thegoalforthepoliticianispersuasionornewsmanagement.Thus,thepoliticalfigurewantstocontrolthereleaseofinformation.Conversely,thepressesrelyonsuchconferencesasameansforassuringthatthepoliticianisheldaccountableforhisorherpoliciesandactions.Mediaoutletsalsorelyonpressconferencesasawayofobtainingnewinformationsoitcanbereleasedasquicklyaspossible.
