Thesublime,bycontrast,isvasteventoinfinity,difficult,magnificent,darkandrugged.AccordingtoBurke,itwill“fillthemindwiththatsortofdelightfulhorror,whichisthemostgenuineeffectandearliesttestofthesublime”.Athingmaybeuglyandyetsublimeifitis“unitedwithsuchqualitiesasexciteastrongterror”.Burkemadeitclearthatgreatnessliesonthesideofsublime,notofthebeautiful.
