、ncrete and more structured way of communication. In other words, multimedia is the simultaneous use of data from different sources. These sources in multimedia are known as media elements. With growing and very fast changing information technology, multimedia has become a crucial part of computer wo

、rld. Its importance has been realized in almost all walks of life, may it be education, cinema, advertising, fashion and what not. 7. 1. 1Whats Multimedia? Multimedia is nothing but the processing and presentation of information in a more structured and understandable manner using more than one medi

、a such as text, graphics, animation, audio and video. 1Thus multimedia products can be an academic presentation, game or corporate presentation, information kiosk, fashion-designing, etc. Multimedia systems are those computer platforms and software tools that support the interactive uses of text, gr

、aphics, animation, audio, or motion video. 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia下一頁返回In other words, a computer capable of handling text, graphics, audio, animation and video is called multimedia computer. If the sequence and timing of these media elements can be controlled by the user, then one can nam

、e it as Interactive Multimedia. 7. 1. 2 Media ElementsWe will introduce some common media elements, such as text, graphic, animation and so on. 1. TextWhether or not they have used a computer, most people are familiar with text. Text is the basis for word processing programs and is still the fundame

、ntal information used in many multimedia programs. In fact, many multimedia applications are based on the conversion of a book to a computerized form. This conversion gives the user immediate access to the text and lets him or her display pop-up windows, which give definitions of certain words. Mult

、imedia applications also enable the user to instantly display information related to a certain topic that is being viewed. 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回Most powerfully, the computerized form of a book allows the user to look up information quickly without referring to the index or table

、of contents. The Windows operating environment gives the user an almost infinite range of expressing text. As a multimedia programmer, you can choose in what font to display text, how big it should be, and in what color it should be displayed. By displaying text in more than one format, the message

、a multimedia application is trying to portray can be made more understandable. 2. GraphicsAnother interesting element in multimedia is graphics. As a matter of fact, taking into consideration the human nature, a subject is more explained with some sort of pictorial/graphical representation, rather t

、han as a large chunk of text. This also helps to develop a clean multimedia screen, whereas the use of large amount of text in a screen makes it dull in presentation. 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回Unlike text, which uses a universal ASCII format, graphics does not have a single agreed for

、mat. They have different formats to suit different requirements. The most commonly used format for graphics is BMP or bitmap pictures. The size of a graphics depends on the resolution it is using. A computer image uses pixels or dots on the screen to form itself. And these dots or pixels, when combi

、ned with a number of colors and other aspects are called resolution. Resolution of an image or graphics is basically the pixel density and the number of colors it uses. And the size of the image depends on its resolution. A standard VGA ( Video Graphics Arrays ) screen can display a screen resolutio

、n of 640480=307 200 pixels. And a Super VGA screen can display up-to 1024768=786 432 pixels on the screen. While developing multimedia graphics, one should always keep in mind the image resolution and the number of colors to be used, as this has a direct relation with the image size. If the image si

、ze is bigger, it takes more time to load and also requires higher memory for processing and larger disk-space for storage. However, different graphics formats are available which take less space and are faster to load into the memory. 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回There are several graphi

、cs packages available to develop excellent images and also to compress them so that they take less disk-space but use higher resolution and more colors. Packages like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, PaintShop Pro, etc. are excellent graphics packages. There are graphics galleries available in CD

、s ( Compact Disk ) with readymade images to suit almost every requirement. These images can directly be incorporated into multimedia development. 3. AnimationAnimation is a simulation of movement created by displaying a series of pictures, or frames. Cartoons on televisions are one example of animat

、ion. Animation on computers is one of the chief ingredients of multimedia presentations. There are many software applications that enable you to create animations that you can display on a computer monitor. 27. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回Note the difference between animation and video. Wh

、ereas video takes continuous motion and breaks it up into discrete frames, animation starts with independent pictures and puts them together to form the illusion of continuous motions. 4. Video Besides animation there is one more media element, which is known as video. With the latest technology it

、is possible to include video impact on clips of any type into any multimedia creation, be it corporate presentation, fashion design, entertainment games, etc. 3 The video clips may contain some dialogues or sound effects and moving pictures. These video clips can be combined with the audio, text and

、 graphics for multimedia presentation. Incorporation of video in a multimedia package is more important and complicated than other media elements. One can procure video clips from various sources such as existing video films or even can go for an outdoor video shooting. 7. 1 The Technology of Multim

、edia上一頁下一頁返回All the video available is in analog format. To make it usable by computer, the video clips are needed to be converted into computer understandable format, i. e. , digital format. Both combinations of software and hardware make it possible to convert the analog video clips into digital f

、ormat. This alone does not help, as the digitized video clips take lots of hard disk space to store, depending on the frame rate used for digitization. The computer reads a particular video clip as a series of still pictures called frames. Thus video clip is made of a series of separate frames where

、 each frame is slightly different from the previous one. The computer reads each frame as a bitmap image. Generally there are 15 to 25 frames per second so that the movement is smooth. If we take fewer frames than this, the movement of the images will not be smooth. To cut down the space there are s

、everal modern technologies in Windows environment . Essentially these technologies compress the video image so that less space is required. 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回However, latest video compression software makes it possible to compress the digitized video clips to its maximum. In t

、he process, it takes less storage space. One more advantage of using digital video is that the quality of video will not deteriorate from copy to copy as the digital video signal is made up of digital codes and not electrical signals. 4Caution should be taken while digitizing the video from analog s

、ource to avoid frame droppings and distortion. A good quality video source should be used for digitization. 5. AudioThe integration of audio sound into a multimedia application can provide the user with information not possible through any other method of communication. Some types of information can

、t be conveyed effectively without using sound. It is nearly impossible, for example, to provide an accurate textual description of the beat of a heart or the sound of the ocean. 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回Audio sound can also reinforce the users understanding of information presented i

、n another type of media. Experts in learning have found that presenting information using more than one sense aids in later retention of the information. Most importantly, it can also make the information more interesting to the user. Audio sound is available in several different formats. One of the

、m is the Windows wave file. A wave file contains the actual digital data used to play back the sound as well as a header that provides additional information about the resolution and playback rate. Wave files can store any type of sound that can be recorded by a microphone. Another type of audio sou

、nd that may be used is known as the Musical Instrument Digital Interface, or MIDI for short. The MIDI format is actually a specification invented by musical instrument manufacturers. Rather than being a digitized form of the sound, the MIDI specification is actually a set of messages that describes

、what musical note is being played. The MIDI specification cant store anything except in the form of musical notes. 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回7. 1. 3 Multimedia Software1. DreamweaverMacromedia Dreamweaver is a professional HTML editor for visually designing and managing web sites and

、pages. Whether you enjoy the control of hand-coding HTML or prefer to work in a visual editing environment, Dreamweaver makes it easy to get started and provides you with helpful tools to enhance your Web design experience. Dreamweaver includes many coding tools and features: an HTML, CSS, and JavaS

、cript reference, a JavaScript debugger, and code editors that allow you to edit JavaScript, XML, and other text documents directly in Dreamweaver. Macromedias Roundtrip HTML technology imports HTML documents without reformatting the code and you can set Dreamweaver to clean up and reformat HTML when

、 you want it to. Dreamweaver is fully customizable. Use Dreamweaver to create your own objects and commands, modify keyboard shortcuts, and even write JavaScript code to extend Dreamweavers capabilities with new behaviors, property inspectors, and site reports. 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一

、頁返回Dreamweaver can display a document in three ways: in Design view, in Code view, and in a split view that shows both the design and code. To change the view in which you are working, select a view in the Dreamweaver toolbar. By default, Dreamweaver displays the document window in design view. In a

、ddition, you can work with Dreamweavers design view in two different ways in layout view and standard view. You select these views in the view category of the objects panel. In layout view you can design a page layout, insert graphics, text, and other media;in standard view, in addition to inserting

、 graphics, text and media, you can also insert layers, create frame documents, create tables, and apply other changes to your options that are not available in layout view. 2.Adobe PhotoshopAdobe Photoshop is a kind of photo retouching, image editing, and color painting software. Whether you are a n

、ovice or an expert in image editing, the Photoshop program offers you the tools you need to get professional-quality results. 57. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回With Photoshop, you can easily combine crisp, resolution-independent type with pixel-based images, and then output sharp type edges

、with your image to produce high-quality results. Whats more, Photoshop includes extensive new type formatting controls to help you produce the best-looking text possible, including the new type-warping that lets you twist and pull type to produce cool effects. Best of all, the type remains directly

、editable in the image no matter how you manipulate it. Photoshop presents an intuitive new layer effects interface, a new selection of effect options, and new support for saving your layer effect designs as layer styles for ongoing use. The new Layer Styles dialog box shows at a glance which effects

、 are applied to the currently selected layer and lets you define which effects to use in a layer style. Once you save a layer style, it appears in the new styles palette. Applying layer styles is easy: You create type, shapes, and other art work elements on a layer, and then click a style in the Sty

、les palette to apply it. 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回With the new slice tool and slice select tool, you can now slice Web graphics directly in Photoshop. Create user-defined slices by dragging over different image areas with the slice tool. Photoshop defines slices automatically for the

、 areas you dont define, so that an HTML table can be generated during export. 6You can modify many attributes of Photoshop slices, including size, position, stacking order, and visibility. 3.PowerPointPowerPoint is multimedia display software. It is one component of Office suite software. It provide

、s means for making multimedia display. PowerPoint has very strong functions for making slides. You can input title and text easily, and also add montage pictures, spreadsheets, graphs on the slide, and change the layout of the slide, adjust their sequence, delete or duplicate the slide. After enteri

、ng PowerPoint, an activation dialogue box” first appears. It provides four ways to set up a display file. The display file is a series of slides. Each slide can be seen as an independent page of a book. 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回A slide can be used to display outline, text, numbers, a

、nalytic spreadsheets or images, and by “l(fā)ink, ”it can realize hypertext and hypermedia. Each slide follows a standard format, which is called “template. ”In display software, various module libraries are available for selection. Using “view” button, PowerPoint can perform view switching. Regardless

、of what view is selected, contents of the display file will not change. Graphs and sheets can help audience to see clearly tendency and proportion. EXCEL electronic spreadsheets and graphs can be introduced into slides to show 2-dimentional or 3-dimentional effect. You can also use rotating graphs a

、nd spreadsheets to help visual effect. You can also combine multiple figures into one, or combine figures with correspondent graphs and spreadsheets into one slide. Self-defined animation effect is used mostly, and is applicable to more objects. First, select “self-define” command from “slide projec

、tion” menu to open “self-define” dialogue box. 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回Second, set the projection order of each object ( it is possible to project the object soon after the precedent one or after several seconds, or by clicking the mouse ) , and set animation effect together with so

、und effect. If the object is photo, animation effect is possible;if the object is text, it can project them one word after another or project them in a group. It is possible to add hyperlink in display file to transfer to different positions, for example, skip to slide, other display files, Word fil

、es, EXCEL spreadsheets or other applied procedures, etc. To do this, you will first select text or objects to be hyperlinked;second, use “hyperlink” command in “insert” tool bar;third, single click the slide or files to be hyperlinked in the “insert hyperlink” dialogue box. In projection, when the m

、ouse arrives at the object ( underlined ) or hyperlinked object, the mouse arrow will turn into a “hand” as a sign of hyperlink. Using “action” button in the “slide projection” menu, you can insert various action buttons onto the slide. In so doing, an “action setting” dialogue box will pop up autom

、atically for you to select the skip position in the “hyperlink list. ”7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回7. 1. 4 Multimedia Application Multimedia finds its application in various areas including, but not limited to, education, entertainment, engineering, medicine, mathematical and scientific

、research. In education, multimedia is used to produce computer based training courses, reference books like encyclopedias. A CBT ( Computer Based Training ) lets the user go through a series of presentation, text about a particular topic and associated illustrations in various information formats. A

、n electronic multimedia encyclopedia can present information in better ways than a traditional encyclopedia can. So the user has more fun and learns fast. For instance, an article on World War can include hyperlinks of countries involved in the war. When a user clicks on a hyperlink, he/she is redir

、ected to a detailed article about that country. In addition, it can include a video on Pacific Campaign. It can also present images which are maps pertinent to World War . 7. 1 The Technology of Multimedia上一頁下一頁返回Hyperlinks let a user access information in a non-linear fashion as opposed to print ma

、terials which are essentially linear. This, when added to multiple elements such as pictures, photos, audio and video can speed-up learning and improve user experience. Multimedia is heavily used in entertainment industry, especially to develop special effects in movies and animation for cartoon cha

、racters. Multimedia games, which are software programs available either as CD-ROMs or online are a popular pastime. Some video games also use multimedia features. In engineering, especially in mechanical and automobile engineering, multimedia is primarily used for designing a machinery or automobile
