If we could harvest the energy coming from just 10 hectares (25 acres) of the surface of the sun, we would have enough to supply the current energy demand of the world. However, there are three important rea

7、sons why this cannot be done. First, the earth is displaced from the sun, and since the suns energy spreads out like light from a candle, only a small amount of the energy leaving an area of the sun reaches an equal area on the earth. Second, the earth turns about its polar axis (極軸), so that any co

The third and least factor is the condition of the thin shell of atmosphere that surrounds the earths surface. At best the earths atmosphere accounts for another 30 percent reduction in the

9、 suns energy. As is widely known, however, the weather conditions can stop all but a minimal amount of solar radiation from reaching the earths surface for many days in a row.2.課外閱讀 We find that the moon is about 239,000 miles (384,551 km) away from the earth, and, to within a few thousand miles, it

11、 a month, or, more exactly, once every 27 and 1/3 days. It is our nearest neighbor in space, and like ourselves it is kept tied to the earth by the earths gravitational pull. Except for the sun, the moon looks the biggest object in the sky. Actually it is one of the smallest, and only looks big beca

Once a month, or, more exactly, once every 29 and 1/2 days, at the time we call “full moon”, its whole disc looks bright. At other times only part of it appears bright,

13、 and we always find that this is the part which faces towards the sun, while the part facing away from the sun appears dark.
