3、e my blood run cold.“People in the town thought George was a real golden boy,and they even made him mayor.Then five years ago,he tried to cheat somebody else,and they started to look at all the businesses that he had had a hand in.They discovered that hed been a thief for years.”The boy frowned,and
4、looked away.“But she suspected something.She knew.”“She?”I said.“His daughter,Betty,”said Edward Stark.“I loved Betty,and we even talked about getting married.Then my father discovered that Blackwood had cheated him out of nearly half a million dollars!He nearly went out of his mind with worry,tryin
5、g to prove it.But he failed.Then soon after,he had a heart attack while he was driving his car.The car crashed,and he and his passager were both killed.It was Blackwood who killed my fathermurderer!”“Who.was the passenger?”I asked.But I knew the answer.“I was,”he said.“Youre dead,”I said.Im talking
6、to a ghost,I thought.He laughed.“Dead?Yes,I guess I am.And youre the first person who has ever been able to see me.”“Im Bettys daughter,”I said.“Ah!I see,”he said.There was a far-away look in his eyes.“I loved Betty very much.”“When did you.?”I began.“Die?”he said.“December 1st,1975.”Two days before

8、g!“Help me!”I screamed.I was slipping downwards with the ground.I could see Edwards face above meand behind him the statue was starting to fall!“Here!Grab my hand!”Edward shouted.But his voice seemed far away.I put out a hand.and held something.A moment later it was pulling me up.Then suddenly the s
9、tatue came crashing down past me,less than half a metre away.It was a very narrow escape.I looked at my hand.I was holding on to a tree.There was a light above me.“Somebodys down there!”shouted a man.“Where?”shouted another man.“In the tree!Look!”A minute later,a rope was thrown down to me.“Can you
10、get a hand on it?”shouted one of the men.“Put your foot in the rope,then we can pull you up.”I tried to stop shaking,put out a hand and held the rope.Then I managed to climb on to it.“Hold on!”Came a shout.Slowly,the two men pulled me up the side of the cliff.When I got to the top,I saw that they we
11、re policemen.“Are you OK?” one of them asked.“Yes,”I said,although I was actually scared stiff.“We were driving out along the cliff road,”he said,helping me across to the police car.“We heard the cliff go.Were you alone down there?”“No.yes.I mean.”I sat in the car and tried to stop shaking.One of th
12、em put a coat over my shoulders.“Whats wrong?”he asked.“The eyes.”I began,but then I stopped.How could I explain?I could still see the statue in my headthe bearded face,the eyes.The eyes had looked at me,I was sure of it.And the eyes were aliveI would swear to it!“What were you doing down there?”the
13、 same policeman was asking me.“Learning the truth,”I said after a moment.“Learning about hatred.”Discovering the Stillwater secret,I thought.知識歸納1.情態(tài)動詞+have done的用法(1)“must +have+過去分詞”表示對過去發(fā)生的行為的推測,意思是“一定,準是”,只用于肯定句。The streets are wet;it must have rained.街道是濕的,準是下雨了。說明:若要表示否定,則要用“cant或couldnt+have+
14、過去分詞”這一形式,意思是“不可能”。The light is still on;she cant have gone to sleep.燈還亮著,她不可能睡著了。(2)“may (might)+have+過去分詞”表示對過去發(fā)生的行為的推測,一般只用于肯定句或否定句中(疑問句中用can或could),含有“想必,也許,可能已經(jīng)”等意思,其否定形式有“可能不會”之意。The children may have gone to bed.孩子們可能已經(jīng)上床睡覺了。They might not have settled the problem.他們可能尚未解決那個問題。說明:may和might含義基
15、本相同,might所表示的可能性比may弱,語氣也更加委婉。(3)“should+have+過去分詞”表示過去該做而實際上未做的事,意思是“本應(yīng)該”,它的否定式表示不應(yīng)該發(fā)生卻發(fā)生了的行為,意思是“本不應(yīng)該”。He should have handed in homework yesterday.他本應(yīng)該昨天就交作業(yè)的。(4)“ought to+have+過去分詞”,表示過去“早應(yīng)該、本當”之意,語氣較強,常含有“責備、不贊成”的口氣。We ought to have given her more help.我們本應(yīng)該給她更多的幫助。(實際上沒做到)(5)“should+have 過去分詞”還
16、能表示“可能、揣想、推斷”,常譯成“應(yīng)該已經(jīng),可能已經(jīng)”。He should have done it already.他應(yīng)該已經(jīng)做完了。(6)“can(could)+have+過去分詞”表示對過去行為的懷疑或不肯定。這時,它只能用于否定句和疑問句。Can she have done the exercises?她會做完練習(xí)嗎?(7)“neednt+have+過去分詞”表示本來不必做某事而實際上已經(jīng)做了。You neednt have waited for me.你們本來不必等我的。(但實際上等了)2.trouble短語歸納(1)get into trouble惹上麻煩(如因犯錯所致)Even
17、 an experienced climber can get into trouble.哪怕是個有經(jīng)驗的登山者也能陷入困境。(2)get o trouble給某人惹上麻煩Dont mention my name or youll get me into trouble.別提我的名字,免得給我惹麻煩。(3)go to trouble to do something不辭勞苦、不怕費事做某事Thank you for going to so much trouble to find what I was looking for.多謝你這么費心找到了我要找的東西。(4)be in trouble在危
18、險、受罰、痛苦、憂慮等的處境中If they cant keep to the schedule,theyll be in trouble.他們不按時完成計劃就要倒大霉了。(5)make trouble (for sb.)制造麻煩,搗亂If I say no,the boss will only make trouble for me.我要說個“不”字,老板準跟我過不去。(6)take the trouble to do sth.不怕費事或困難盡力做某事Decent journalists should take the trouble to check their facts.責任心強的新聞
19、工作者應(yīng)該不厭其煩地核實報道內(nèi)容。.詞語辨析1.ashamed,shameful(1)ashamed “感到羞恥、覺得慚愧、不好意思”,表示主語主觀認為是可恥的,be ashamed of doing sth.,be ashamed of oneself for doing sth.指因為做了某事而覺得羞愧。如果用be ashamed to do sth.則可理解為“覺得可恥而不愿做某事”或“因做了某事而覺得可恥”。He was ashamed of being unable to solve the problem.他因為解決不了那個問題而感到羞愧。Im ashamed to leave y
20、ou this way.就這樣離開你,我感到慚愧。(2)shameful表示事物本身的客觀性質(zhì)是“可恥的”。To steal money from a blind person is a shameful act.偷盲人的錢是可恥的行為。說明:ashamed只能作表語,而shameful作定語、表語均可。2.apologize to,apologize forapologize to sb.(=say sorry to sb.)意思是“向某人道歉”,不能說apologize sb.;“代替某人向某人道歉”可用apologize to sb.for sb.(to sb.是給某人道歉,for sb
21、.是替某人);“因為某事向某人道歉”可用apologize to sb.for sth.。You are so rude to your sister,and you must apologize to her.你對你姐姐太無禮了,你必須向她道歉。Tom,I want to apologize to you for us all.湯姆,我想代表我們大伙向你道歉。He apologized to me for his being late.他因遲到向我道歉。3.think about,think of,think over(1)think about和think of這兩個短語表示下列意義時,其
22、意義和用法相同,可以互換??紤]Dont think of/about me any more.不要再考慮我。對有某種看法What do you think of/about the story?你認為這個故事怎么樣?(2)think of表示下列意義時,一般不和think about互換。想要,打算Are you really thinking of marrying him?你真的打算和他結(jié)婚嗎?想出,想到Who thought of the good idea?誰想出的那個好主意?關(guān)心、想著He is always thinking of others.他老是為別人著想。想起、記得I ca
23、nt think of her name.我想不起她的名字。(3)think about表示下列意義時一般不和think of替換。“回想”過去的事情I often thought about what you said last time I met you.我常常想到上次見到你時你說的話。“考慮”某事、某計劃是否切實可行Ill think about his suggestion,and give him an answer tomorrow.我要考慮一下他的建議,明天給他答復(fù)。(4)think over意為“仔細考慮”。Think over,and youll find a way.仔細
