The events take place at th
11、e end of the speakers life.Stanza 2 We slowly drove he knew no haste,And I had put awayMy labour, and my leisure too,For His Civility.This “civility” that Death exhibits in taking time out for her leads her to give up on those things that had made her so busy. So they can just enjoy this carriage ri

Stanza 3 We passed the school where children strove At Recess in the Ring;We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain,We passed the Setting sun.We see reminders of the world that the speaker is passing from, with children playing, fields of grain and the setting sun. Stanza 4 Or rather He passes Us The
13、 Dews drew quivering and chill For only Gossamer(薄紗), my Gown My Tippet(披肩) only Tulle (薄紗) Her place in the world shifts between stanza 3 and 4; in the third stanza, “We passed the Setting Sun,” but at the opening of the fourth stanza, she corrects this“Or rather He passed Us “because she has stopp
14、ed being an active agent, and is only now a part of the landscape. Stanza 5 We paused before a House that seemed A Swelling of the Ground; The Roof was scarcely visible The Cornice(飛檐檐口) in the Ground The speaker is going to die. Death just led her to her burial spot! The we paused marks the second
15、stop in the poem. It could end their journey.
