Students should expect that the materials will be more difficult than their previous readings in high school, as the languag
7、e of the Western is mildly archaic and highly colloquial. However, learning to deal with regional differences of dialect is essential for advanced study of literature, and students who successfully complete the course will have a new range of material opened to them. Attention will be given to intro
8、ducing the characteristics of the genre and of genre theory in general, as well as to the historical background of the American West and the fictionalization of the frontier after its closing. Students will be expected to read one short story and watch one film per week, and be able to take short qu

The final exam will be a performance based on one of the topics. The class activities will be structured around group work that will requ
17、ire the full, active and engaged participation of each student. From the beginning it was an ideological protes
19、t by Brad Pitt against Troy. And what did he end up with? A woman who wants to open an orphanage in Mexico and adopt kids from all over the world. This was the woman whos face “sank a thousand ships and burnt the topless towers of Ilium. So Western Civilization is largely about the battle for and ab
20、out men and women. In that battle there were cultural representations of men and women, sculptures, paintings, books, all about the battle between men and women. So we will look at some of these and see if we can find in it something that might be called Western Civilization. We might also ask the q
21、uestion why Western Civilization has become MacDonalds, 7/11 and Coke. How does one start with men and women and end with hamburgers and fries? Requirements: Two papers and proof of civilization. Students will learn descriptive techniques and will be introduced to the structure of expository argument. The analytical writing skills introduced in the third paper will
26、be further practiced and developed in the second semester. For each writing task we will read several sample essays and stories, and we will start from the premise that good writing begins with analytical reading skills. All papers must be original work developed in our class activities without cons
27、ultation of outside sources. Class meetings will consist of discussions of assigned readings, pre-writing and writing activities, group workshops, and paired peer evaluations of first and second drafts of each paper. 34、 designed to teach the basic structural requirements of a short expository essay (thesis, strong topic sentences, supporting citations, etc.). Good expository writing develops out of a process that involves thoughtful engagement, close reading, speculation and interpretation, writing, and rewriting.
35、 To facilitate this process, students will be asked to read novels and/or autobiographies of their own choosing, for which they will keep an ongoing double-entry journal. The journal will provide, in turn, the ”raw material” for the three-to-four (2-5 page) papers students will be asked to write and
36、 revise over the course of the semester. We will select five to six tragedies out of the extant thirty-two tragedies by
38、three Athenian poets (Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides) and discuss what is there about them that makes them what they are. Greek tragedy is surely one of the supreme achievements of human creativity, combining profundity of thoughts and artistry of expression. By reading excellent tragic poetry,
39、we will know some facts about Athenian tragedy. It works with the materials of Legend, part fixed, part fluid. It is guided in part by the shape of the story which is being enacted. It has the form of a highly stylized structure of poetry and rhetoric, and uses characters abstracted from the persona
40、lities of flesh-and-blood life, offering them, as it seems, for judgments other than what we would pass on real people. Despite such artificiality, it frequently compels us to a conviction and feeling at least as deep as what we would feel about real people; in order to do this, we have to suspend j
41、udgment and make concessions, but tragedy makes us make them, and makes us forget that we have made them. It projects a world of people who are fictitious, but not a fairy-story world, because these people and their stories are represented as deeply involved in personal and moral issues. When such c
42、onviction is complete, and the persons, and what they say, and the progress of the story closely cohere, we feel a sense of inevitability and rightness sometimes more pure than we feel when presented with an account of actual events. Major tragic ideas such as hamartia, pride, choice, fate, evil, re

49、lm will be used as supplements to the lectures: A Personal Journey through American Movies with Martin Scorsese, Cinema Europe, and American Cinema. Students are required to attend the weekly film screening to be scheduled in the evening. Those who are interested in taking this course should begin t
