Scott FitzgeraldTender Is the Night was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald since 1925 and first published in Scribner's Magazine in 1934 in four issues; the copy I read was rewro

2、te by Smith Barney and reprinted in Beijing in September, 2007.F. Scott Fitzgerald(September 24, 1896-December 21, 1940), was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1896, attended Princeton University. He was an American author of novels and short stories. He published his first novel, This Side of Paradis

3、e, in 1920. The same year he married Zelda, a patient admitted to a psychiatric clinic for treatment of schizophrenia in 1930. During his lifetime, he mainly wrote five novels, with the last one not finished. Tender Is the Night was his fourth and final completed novel. He died of a heart attack in

4、1940 at the age of forty-four while working on The Love of the Last Tycoon. Among his works, The Great Gatsby is his masterpiece. His works are the paradigm writings of the Jazz Age. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century and also considered as a member of

5、the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s. Tender Is the Night is a romantic realism story concluded three books, Book One, Book Two, and Book Three. The whole story was originated from the authors real life. Dick and Nicole, the miserable and declining couple, seemed like himself and his wife. D

6、ick, himself, actually represented most of the Americans at that time. They chasing after the so-call “American dream”, in fact, it is just for money, success and immigration in Jazz Age. The story is set in that background, beginning on the pleasant shore of the French Riviera, near the city of Can

7、nes on one June morning in 1925.The author through depicting the life-experience of Dick, a doctor as well as the male protagonist, reflected the erosion of social life and human beings spiritual emptiness. Decline is the main theme of this novel. Most of the materials in it are the authors experien

8、ce in person: alcohol, life down, his wifes disease and his fear. It also expressed his disappointment towards the life he was living and towards the people in macrocosm. A sentence in the book “When people are taken out of their depths they lose their heads, no matter how charming a bluff they put

9、up”is a very strong evidence to show the theme of this book.The narrative structure of the novel breakthrough the traditional narrative structurally. It uses a dramatic plot, rather than strictly compliance with the chronological order. And the reader can through a pair of sharp feminine eyes of an

10、inexperienced deep movie star Rosemary saw Mrs Divers life as well as all kinds of people in their social circles. Such a structure and narrative methods tend to confuse the readers contacted this novel for the first time. Therefore, the structure of the novel is subjected to criticism at that time

11、is understandable. Besides this novel also features a soundless ending on the aesthetic aspect. It is also a breakthrough, left the reader a lot of room for thinking, from "The silence sound" effect. Although this Breakthrough at first not understood by the people, but now they become a co

12、mmon practice.At the beginning of the story, Dick brought his convalescent wife to Paris and Swiss. Among this journey, they came upon a famous actress, Rosemary, and made friends with her. With the rehabilitation of Nicole, but growing dejected in Dick. Later he had an affair with Rosemary, enchant

During the treatment, they fell in love with each other and then married. For cure Nicole of her disease, Dick gave his most meticulous and cons

But with the convalescence of Nicole, exhaustion of body and mind overwhelmed Dick, he become seriously depressed and was increasingly sank. At the end of the novel, the lost marriage and career protagonist D

16、ick, completed a major academic medical paper, and ultimately chose the town of Hornell, New York as his medical practice location and spent the rest of his life in peace and obscurity.In Tender is the night, numerous magnificent and gorgeous banquets, beautiful and glamorous Hollywood movie stars,

17、extravagant and spendthrift life scene can be seen. I am really surprised at the affluence of the capitalist countries at that time. But another aspect was disclosed apathetically by the book; when people chasing after the unprecedented charming American dream, a group of the chasers lost themselves

18、 and became spirit collapse and moral degradation. Dick is the authors incarnation. The talented Dick's goal is to be a good psychologist. When he met Nicole, however, it becomes a distant prospect. As a psychological doctor, Dick accepted Nicole regardless of others' good willing dissuade.

19、He wants to love and save Nicole with his wealth of medical knowledge and to restore her health of body and mind; he also want to influence Nicole to live in a healthy lifestyle and then to improve popularity in society pathology. However, that kind of Dick didn't realize that in Warrens family, he is just a household nurse and doctor
