7、estroy 吞滅,席卷 The flame devours the whole building. 火把整幢樓都吞沒了 3. take in eagerly with eyes, ears, or mind 貪婪地看、聽 His eyes devoured the scene. 他兩眼貪婪的看著這美麗的風(fēng)景。 TEXTWe have all experienced days when everything goes wrong . 譯文:我們都曾經(jīng)歷過諸事不利的日子。 when 引導(dǎo)的定語從句修飾days Every dog has its day. 每個(gè)人都有飛黃騰達(dá)的日子。A day m

8、ay begin well enough, but suddenly everything seems to get out of control. 譯文:有時(shí)一天開始時(shí)可能還算順利,但是突然間一切似乎都不可收拾了。 get out of control = uncontrollable = beyond control 失控 everything seems to get out of control = everything seems to be uncontrollable / beyond controlWhat invariably happens is that a great

9、number of things choose to go wrong at precisely the same moment. 譯文:事情總是這樣發(fā)生的:很多事情偏偏在同一時(shí)間出亂子。 由what引導(dǎo)的主語從句。 invariably = always What happened yesterday was that he couldnt deal with the hot potato. 昨天發(fā)生的事就是他沒能應(yīng)付這個(gè)棘手的人。 precisely = exactlyIt is as if a single unimportant event set up a chain of reac

10、tions. 似乎一件小事情就會(huì)導(dǎo)致一連串的連鎖反應(yīng)。 a chain of reactions = a series of reactions it is as if 似乎看起來 it seems as if 似乎看起來 it looks as if 似乎看起來 set up = cause 引起,導(dǎo)致,造成 What set up the accident / trouble? set up(= create) 創(chuàng)立,建立 set up a world record 創(chuàng)立一個(gè)世界記錄 The unimportant event is the prelude to trouble. 不重要的

12、eyes open.have an eye to (如果用動(dòng)詞have就一定要跟介詞to搭配)keep an eye to the baby = keep ones eyes on the babyeye for eye 以牙還牙have eyes only for 只要,只愛 I have eyes only for you.look sb. in the eyes 兩眼直視某人Dont look me in the eyes. 不要直直地盯著我看。eye to eye with sb. 與某人看法完全一致I invariably eye to eye with my sister. 我總是

13、與我的姐姐看法一致。turn a blind eye to sth. 對(duì)視而不見He even turns a blind eye to me. make eyes at sb. 含情脈脈地看著某人The boy is making eyes at his girlfriend.While you are on the phone, the baby pulls the table-cloth off the table, smashing half your best crockery and cutting himself in the process. 譯文:當(dāng)你在接電話時(shí),小孩把臺(tái)布拉

14、了下來,把最好的陶器打碎了一半,同時(shí)手又被割破了。 on the phone = answer the phone 注意與介詞off搭配的動(dòng)詞詞組的意思: pull off 拉下來 pick off 取下來 knock off 碰落下來 smash half 摔成兩半 in the process 在這個(gè)過程中You hang up hurriedly and attend to baby, crockery, etc. 譯文:你連忙掛上電話,去照顧孩子,收拾陶器等等。 hang up = put on the receiver 掛斷電話 attend to = look after = de

15、al with 照顧,處理 Please attend to my baby. 請(qǐng)照料我的孩子。 Excuse me, I have something urgent to attend to. 請(qǐng)?jiān)彛矣幸患笔乱幚?。As if this were not enough to reduce you to tears, your husband arrives, unexpectedly bringing three guests to dinner.譯文:似乎這一切還不足以使你氣惱得流淚,你丈夫回來了,出乎意料地帶著三個(gè)客人來吃飯。重點(diǎn)句型。這是個(gè)虛擬語氣。reduce you to t

16、ears 迫使你流下眼淚-reduce sb to tears.You almost reduce me to tears. 你快要讓我流下眼淚來了。His comforting words almost reduced his wife to tears. 他安慰的話語讓他的妻子幾乎掉下了眼淚。His answer almost reduced me to silence. 他的回答幾乎讓我沉默了。The bomb reduced to the city to ruins. 這枚炸彈將這個(gè)城市化為廢墟。We can draw a conclusion :Everything seems to

18、le = to a great degree = to great extent as 引導(dǎo)非限定性定語從句as we know 眾所周知As we know, the earth is round.As Brane pointed out, giving up smoking is the easiest thing to do in the world.As the headmaster mentioned, one is never too old to learn.正如這位校長所提及的,活到老,學(xué)到老。as,which都可以引導(dǎo)非限定性定語從句。但 as 重點(diǎn)突出整個(gè)句子的含義 ,而w

19、hich有可能指代主句當(dāng)中某個(gè)詞的含義,也有可能指代整個(gè)句子的含義。 As 引導(dǎo)非限定性定語從句,可以用于主句之前,as和主句之間要有一個(gè)逗號(hào)分隔開來。As we expected, John was admitted to the university. 正如我們所預(yù)料的,John被這所大學(xué)入取了As 引導(dǎo)非限定性定語從句,也可以用在主句之后,這時(shí)就相當(dāng)于whichShe married him, which was unexpected.She married him as was unexpected. 但是在as所引導(dǎo)的非限定性定語從句中,如果運(yùn)用的是被動(dòng)語態(tài)結(jié)構(gòu),被動(dòng)詞可以省略。Sh

(was省略)The material is elastic as shown in the figure. 如圖顯示,這種材料是富有彈性的。在這種情況下,shown之前省略了謂語動(dòng)詞,這時(shí)就不能把a(bǔ)s換成which . 如果要用which 則要補(bǔ)上謂語動(dòng)詞。The material is elastic, which is shown in the figure. During the rush hour one evening two cars collided and both drivers began to argue. 譯文

21、:一天晚上,車輛最擁擠的時(shí)候,兩輛車相撞了。兩位開車人爭(zhēng)論起來。 during the rush hour 上下班的高峰期The woman immediately behind the two cars happened to be a learner. 原句 = it happened that the woman behind the two cars was a learner. 緊跟在兩輛車后的那位女士又碰巧是個(gè)初學(xué)開車的人(實(shí)習(xí)司機(jī))。 happen to 恰巧 I happen to hear the news . 我恰巧聽說了這個(gè)消息。 It happened that I h

22、eard about it the day before yesterday. 很湊巧,我是昨天聽說這個(gè)事的。This made the driver following her brake hard. 譯文:這使得她后面的司機(jī)緊急剎車。 Following 現(xiàn)在分詞作定語修飾driverAs she was thrown forward, the cake went right through the windscreen and landed on the road. 譯文:當(dāng)她由于慣性向前一沖的時(shí)候,蛋糕被甩出了擋風(fēng)玻璃,落到馬路上。 副詞right作狀語,相當(dāng)于straightSeei

23、ng a cake flying through the air, a lorry-driver who was drawing up alongside the car, pulled up all of a sudden. 譯文:一個(gè)貨車司機(jī)正在超車上來,看到一塊蛋糕從空中掠過,于是他把車剎住。 draw up = pull up 停車 all of sudden = suddenlyThe lorry was loaded with empty beer bottles and hundreds of them slid off the back of the vehicle and o

24、n to the road. 譯文:這輛貨車滿載著空啤酒瓶,幾百只瓶子從車子后面滑到了地上。 was loaded with = was filled with vehicle這里指的是truck,lorryThis led to yet another angry argument. 譯文:這又導(dǎo)致了另外一次激烈的爭(zhēng)吵。 lead to = cause 導(dǎo)致Meanwhile, the traffic piled up behind. 譯文:同時(shí)后面的車輛全停下了,堵塞了交通。 meanwhile = at the same time = at the same moment = in th

25、e meantime 與此同時(shí)It took the police nearly an hour to get the traffic on the move again. 譯文:花了近一個(gè)小時(shí)才使交通重新通暢。 get the traffic on the move 使得車輛開動(dòng)起來 on the move = move from place to place 在移動(dòng)之中(介詞on和名詞搭配表示處于某種狀態(tài)或者某種動(dòng)作正在進(jìn)行之中) on the rise 正在上升 on the boil 正在沸騰 on the go 正在忙碌中 on the watch 正在監(jiān)視中 on the turn 正在轉(zhuǎn)變中 on the run 正在逃跑中 on the fly 正在飛行中 on the increase 正在增加 on the decrease 正
