3、i on started in 1621 before the un itedstates of america was established. it was a huge celebrati on fora hard-ear ned harvest the first year after arrivi ng in the new world.on september 6, 1620, the mayflower ship set sail fromPlymouth, dev on, en gla nd, taki ng all the en glish pilgrims(清教徒)to t
4、he new world. the english pilgrims numbered about a hun dred people, and left en gla nd to escape religious persecution. their voyage to the new world was financed by mercha nt adve nturers, an en glish inv estor group.the pilgrims sailed sixty-six days, arrived in the new worldin no vember of the s

8、o more tha n 50. the chief of the tribe had his men hunt five deer to bri ng to the feast. the first tha nksgi ving dinner had an elaborate menu with venison, wild turkey, goose, duck, cra ne, swa n, and other waterfowl; they also has local seafood: clams, lobsters, mussels, salmon, cod, bass, herri
9、ng, shad, bluefish, lots of eel and oysters. they also cooked ple nty of vegetables, among them squash, pumpkins and beans were the most popular.they ate raspberries, strawberries, grapes, plums, cherries, blueberries,walnuts, chestnuts, acorns, hickory and groundnu ts, wheat flour, i ndia n corn an
10、d corn meal and they made beer out of barley. the pumpk in pudd ing was later developed into the traditi onal pumpk in pie.the first tha nksgi ving dinner is said to have lasted fromthree days to one week with much food, beer and liquor. the pilgrims and the native indian sat together on the ground,
11、 shared food with fin gers or used rough plates made of wood or stale bread. they ran races, played old en glish games and staged parades during the festive, with marches, drums and firing of their muskets.tha nksgi ving related to the biblethe phrase thanksgivinginitially comes from the bible.the p

14、he first generationof settlers in this new landhold ing so much promise.from then on, thanksgivingbecame a holiday forcelebrating the harvest in the new world, dates varied from october to no vember each year over the n ext 150 years.tha nksgi ving, the n ati onal holidaythe first nationalthanksgivi
15、ngwas declared by thecontinen talcon gress in 1777. on october 3, 1789, preside ntgeorge washington declared that the people of the united states should observe a day of public tha nksgi ving and prayer on thursday, 26 no vember.many say the credit for theestablishmentof an annualthanksgivingholiday
16、 should be given to sarah josepha hale.being the editor of ladies magaz ine and godey's lady's book, she lobbied to the governors,senators, and presidents for an ati onal holiday and published stories and recipes for that day in her magazine. after 36 years of crusading, she won her battle.
17、in 1863, buoyed by the union victory at gettysburg, preside nt lincoln proclaimed that no vember 26, would be a n ati onal tha nksgi ving day, to be observed every year on the fourth thursday of no vember.in 1941, a congressionaljoint resolutionset the fourththursday of no vember as a n ati onal holiday for tha nksgi ving.there you are - the brief history of tha nksgi ving- a day in america for families and friends to gather together.
