Youve just told me you love me and now youre miserable. You dont regret getting engaged do you?ELI: Oh no, Valere. I dont. Ive no regrets. But, I am worried.VAL: But, Elise, what is there to worry about?ELI: Alas! A hundred things: what my family will say, my fathers anger. in fact criticism from everyone - but most of all, Valere, Im frightened that you will become like most men. Youll leave me because I love you too much.VAL: But, Elise, Im not like other men! I love you and I will love you as long as I live.ELI: Oh Valere. I do believe you! Youll never deceive me. You will always love me and be faithful to me.VAL: Then why are you still worried?ELI: If everyone knew you as I do, I wouldnt be worried at all. You risked your life to save me from drowning Valere You pulled me from the water without any thought for your own safety. To family, I have no doubts about you, but I dont know what other people will think.VAL: Theres only thing that matters: my love for you. Dont bother too much about your father. Hes so mean and hard and harsh to you and your brother that you shouldnt pay any attention to what he thinks! Im sorry, but you know what hes like. When I have found my parents, it wont be hard to get him to accept me as his son-in-low.ELI: Oh Valere, dont go away please. Stay here and try to please my father.VAL: Dont worry! You know what I had to do to get into service with him. Since then, to please him Ive agreed with everything hes said. Im getting like him. I think Im becoming even more of a miser than him. Its difficult but Im learning. I get embarrassed sometimes by not always being truthful but I have to lie. Its his fault.ELI: You should try to please my brother too.VAL: Thats impossible. Hes too different from your father. If I please him your father wont like me. But you could get your brother to help us. Look, hes coming now. Im off. Go on you talk to him.ExitELI: I dont know if Ill be able to tell him everything.Enter CleanteCLE: Elise, you are alone. Good. I want to talk to you.ELI: Im listening. What is it?CLE: Lots of things. Elise, the thing is : I m in love ELI: Youre in love?CLE: Im in love. But before I tell you any more, I know I am dependent on my father that I must always do as he says and that I should not act without his consent. I know that I should not enter into marriage without his consent since parents have never been ruled by foolish passions and they know what is bet for us. I know all this and Im telling you all this so you wont take the trouble to tell it to me.ELI: Have you become engaged, Cleante?CLE: Not yet, but Im going to be. Dont even try to change my mind.ELI: Why do you think I would do that?CLE: Because youre not in love and you dont know what LOVE is, and Im frightened youre too sensible.ELI: Me sensible!? You wait till I tell you; Im as foolish as you.CLE: YOU too?ELI: Yes, but first, tell me your story. Who is she.CLE: She came to this town not long ago but when I first saw her I fell hopelessly in love. Her name is Mariane and she live with her old mother, shes nearly always ill. You should see how kind she is to her. Marianes naturally sweet and good. I wish you could get to know her.ELI: It must be true, Cleante. If you love her, she couldnt be otherwise.CLE: I found out that they have such a small income that theyve hardly enough to live on. Id love to help them but fathers meanness makes it impossible.ELI: Oh I understand you difficulties.CLE: Do you? Well have money when were old and ill but now I cant even buy decent clothes. I want you to help me. Find out what father thinks about me being in love. If hes against our marriage Ive decided to go away and live with Mariane somewhere far away. Ive found someone wholl lend me money. If he wont let you marry for love, leave him too and well both be free of him.ELI: Its true. Since mother died fathers been getting worse and worse.CLE: I can hear his voice. Lets go somewhere else and try to plan what we should do. ExeuntEnter Harpagon & La FlecheHAR: Get out of here at once and dont answer back! You thief, just go!FLE Aside: I have never seen anything so wicked as this cursed old man.HAR: What are you muttering about?FLE: Why are you chasing me out of the house?HAR: You dare to ask? Thief! Get out before I hit you!FLE: But what have I done?HAR: Just leave!FLE: But master, your son told me to wait for him.HAR: Then go and wait for him in the street not here in my house. I wont have someone continually spying on my business, watching whatever I do and ferreting about in every corner for something to steal.FLE: Steal from you? How on earth can any man steal from someone who keeps everything under lock and key and stands guard day and night?HAR: I will lock up whatever I think should be locked up and I will stand guard as I please. To audience There, isnt that the talk of a spy who watches everything you do? I am terrified that he should find something about my money. You are just the kind of person to go about spreading the story that I have money hidden away.FLE: Well, do you have money hidden away?HAR: No, you rascal, I did not say that!aside Im going mad.To La Fleche Do you promise that you will not go about spreading the story that Ive got money hidden away?FLE: So, what if you do have money? It makes no difference to any of us!HAR: Ha! Ill teach you to speak like that! He boxes La Fleche on the ear One last time get out of here!FLE: All right, Im going.HAR: You are not taking anything of mine with you, are you?FLE: What could I possibly take of yours?HAR: Come here so I can see. Show me your hands.FLE: Here they are.HAR Pointing to La Fleches breeches Have you put anything inside there?FLE: See for yourself.HAR feeling the knees of La Fleches breeches these wide breeches are just right hiding stolen goods.FLE: Ah! How Id love to steal from him.HAR: EH?FLE: What?HAR: What did you say about stealing?FLE: I just said youre wasting your time.HAR: We will see about that.FLE aside A pox on avarice and the avaricious!HAR: Whats that? What did you say?FLE: What did I say?HAR: Yes. What did you say about avarice and the avaricious?FLE: I said a pox on avarice and avaricious menHAR: Who are these avaricious people? FLE: Unpleasant people.HAR: What people?FLE: What are you thinking about?HAR: Im thinking about the things I should be thinking about.FLE: Do you think I was talking about you?HAR: What I think is my business but Id like to know who you were talking to when you said that.FLE: I. I was speaking. to my hat.HAR: Which I might well knock off your stupid head.FLE: Would you want to stop me from cursing avaricious men?HAR: No, but Ill stop you from being insolent. Shut up.FLE: Im naming no names.HAR: Ill hit you if you say any more.FLE: If the shoe fits, wear it.HAR: Will you be quiet!FLE: Yes, in spite of myself. Showing him one of his waistcoat pockets Youve not looked in this pocket yet.HAR: Come on now, give it back to me.FLE: What?HAR: What you took from me.FLE: I havent taken anything from you.HAR: Are you sure?FLE: Positive.HAR: Get lost then. Go to hell!FLE: Sir, youre so kind!HAR: And good riddance.Exit La FlecheAlone Its so difficult t keep a lot of money at home. You never know where to hide it in the house. I like strong boxes but a thief would go there straight away.Enter Cleante and Elise unnoticedI wonder if it was the best thing to do to bury the 30,000 gold coins in the garden. Perhaps I should have kept the money in the house after all. Noticing Cleante & Elise Oh, Dam nation! They could have heard what I was saying. What is it?CLE: Nothing, Father.HAR: Have you been her long?ELI: Weve just come.HAR: You heardCLE: What, Father?HAR: What I just said.CLE: No.HAR: Yes you did, you did.ELI: We didnt hear a thing.HAR: You definitely heard something. I was talking to myself about how hard it is to find money these days and I was just saying that anyone who happens to have 30,000 gold coins about the house is a very lucky man.CLE: We wouldnt dream of upsetting you.HAR: Believe me. Its not I who has 30.000 in gold.CLE: We dont concern ourselves with your affairs.HAR: If only I had 30,000.CLE: What would you do?HAR: I could certainly use the moneyELI: But you haveHAR:.And I wouldnt need to complain anymore about how hard times are!CLE: My God. Father, why do you complain: everyone knows you are well off.HAR: What! Well off? Anyone who says that is a liar. All liars who go around spreading stories like that!ELI: Dont be angry.HAR: I cant believe that my own children are becoming my enemies.CLE: Were your enemies because we say youre well off?!HAR: Yes. That kind of talk and your extravagant spending will one day cause somebody to come here and cut my throat. under the impression that my clothes are lined with money.CLE: When have I been extravagant?HAR: Why you parade all over the city showing off your fine clothes. Yesterday I criticized your sister but you are far worse. To dress like that you must have robber me.CLE: Ha! How on earth could I steal from you?HAR: I dont know? Where do you get the money for your clothes?CLE: I play cards and Im lucky. I use the money I win to pay for my clothes.HAR: That is very ill advised. I f you are lucky at cards you ought to invest your money and get interest, But enough of this. Let us talk about something else. Eh? Aside, seeing Cleante and Elise making signs to one another I think they are signaling to one another to rob me. To Cleante & Elise What do those signs mean?ELI: We were wondering who should speak first, my brother or myself. Both of us have something to tell you.HAR: And I too have something to tell both of you.CLE: We want to talk to you about marriage, Father.HAR: And it is marriage also that I want t discuss with you.ELI: Oh, Father!HAR: Why “Oh, Father!”CLE: We know your ideas on marriage; were both frightened we wont be able to marry the people we want to.HAR: Dont be worried. I know what is best for you both and neither of you will have any reason to complain of what Ive decided t do. Now, to begin at the beginning, tell me, have you ever seen a girl named Mariane who lives not far from here?CLE: Yes, Father.HAR: to Elise And you?ELI: Ive heard of her.HAR: What do you think of this girl, Cleante?CLE: Shes charming.HAR: And her face?CLE: Beautiful and intelligent.HAR: Do you think this girl would make a good wife?CLE: Definitely.HAR: And do you think shed make a man happy?CLE: Without a doubt.HAR: Mmm. Trouble is she might not have much money.CLE: But Father, money doesnt matter if you love someone.HAR: Pardon me if I disagree. Say rather that a young woman must have other advantages if she has no fortune.CLE: Of course.HAR: Well. I am happy to find that you agree with me. This young woman pleases me and Ive decided t marry her as long as she has some money.CLE: You!HAR: What?CLE: Youve decided to what?!HAR: To marry Mariane.CLE: But, but. you!HAR: Yes, me. What are you trying o say?CLE: My heads spinning. Im going out.Exit CleanteHAR: Its nothing. Into the kitchen with you and have a glass of cold water. To Elise Todays young men have the constitution of a chicken! Well, daughter, thats what I have decided for myself, for your brother. I have a certain widow in mind that someone spoke to me about this very morningnot so young or beautiful, but she has property. And as for you, daughter, I am going to give you to Seigneur Anselme.ELI: To Seigneur Anselme?HAR: Yes. A man who is mature, prudent and wise, who is not yet over fifty and people speak well of him.ELI: kissing her father I would rather not get married at all, Father, if you please.HAR: kissing her back And I, my little girl, my pet, would rather you did get married, if you please.ELI: giving him another kiss I beg your pardon. Father, but.HAR: I beg your pardon, daughter.ELI: I meanI respect Signor Anselme, but, with your permission. I will not marry him.HAR: And I respect him too, so with your permission, you will marry himand you will marry him this very evening.ELI: This very evening?HAR: This very evening.ELI: Thats not going to happen, Father.HAR: It will, daughter.ELI: No.HAR: Yes.ELI: I tell you, no.HAR: I tell you, yes.ELI: You will never force me to do such a thing, I will kill myself sooner than marry such a husband.HAR: You will not kill yourself and you will marry him. Such audacity! To audience Did you ever hear of a daughter talking to her father that way?Act twoCleante is on stage, Enter la Fleche CLB: Ah! You traitor! What new mischief have you been getting up to? Didnt I tell you to wait for me here?FLE: Yes, sir! I came here to wait for you, but your father in a rage chased me out of the house, and I came close to getting a beating.CLE: How goes our business? I need money more urgently than ever. Ive just discovered that my own father wants to marry Mariane.FIB, Your father is in love with Mariane as well?CLE: Yes, and all the trouble in the world to keep him from seeing how upset I was.FLE: Him dabbling in love? How can anyone like is be in love? Why didnt you tell him that you love Mariane?CLE: If he doesnt know, then Ive got more chance to stop him, thats why. But, what did Master Simon say about the money I want to borrow?FLE: Well, sir, he has found someone who is willing to lend yon the 15000 francs, but he demands 26% interest.CLE: 26%! Thats sheer robbery!FLE: Thats what I told him, I think you should think again about this, sir.CLE: but I must have the money. I have to agree to everything they demand. With a Father as miserly as mine, there is no other way. I have to have the money so that Mariane and I can marry and leave this place if need be. FLE: Well, the person that is willing to lend you the money, in order not to burden his conscience. Intends to charge not more than six percent interest.CLE: Six per cent interest! That is an honest fellow indeed! There is no reason to complain about that!FLE: No, indeed not, But, as he says, “Since the lender does not have the sum required in his own house and is forced to borrow himself at twenty per cont interest, it is only fair that the thirst borrower (thats yon) shall pay twenty- six per cent interest”.CLE: Twenty-six per cent interest that is unbelievable!VLE: That is what I told him myself, you had better think twice about borrowing at that rate.CLE: Think twice? How can I must have the moneyI will agree to anything.ELI: To audience Did you ever hear of a father marrying off his daughter in each a way either?HAR: Theres nothing against this marriage and I m sure that everyone will agree with me.ELI: And Im perfectly sure that no reasonable person could possibly approve it.HAR: Heres Valere. Shall we let him judge whats right?ELI: Yes.HAR: Will you accept what he says?ELI: Ill do everything he wants. HAR: All right.Enter Valere Here Valere. We want you to decide who is in the right, my daughter or myself.VAL: Yon, sir. Theres no contradicting that.HAR: You know, of course, what we are talking about?VAL: No. But you couldnt be wrong. You are reason itself.HAR: Tonight I want to marry her to a husband who is as rich as he is wise and the hussy tells me to my face that she will have no part in this. What do you say to that?VAL: what do I say to that?HAR: Yes.VAL: To audience What do I say?HAR: What?VAL:I say fundamentally I am of your opinion and that you couldnt possibly be wrong: but on the other ha
