They regard themselves as unlikely to succeed in college and often feel that there have been no accomplishments (成就) in their lives. In my first year of college especially, I saw people get themselves down all too quickly. There were two students in my class who failed the first test and seemed to give up immediately. From that day on, they walked into the classroom carrying defeat on their shoulders the way other students carried textbooks under their arms. Both students hang on until about mid-term. When they disappeared for good, no one book much notice, for they had already disappeared in spirit (精神) after that first test. They are not the only people in whom I have seen the self-doubt do its work. I have really wanted to shake them by the shoulders and say: You are not dead. Be proud and pleased that you have brought yourself here to college. Be someone. Breathe. Hope. Act. Such people should not use self-doubts as an excuse for not trying. They should pull themselves together and get to work. They should start taking notes in class and trying to learn. Above all, they should not give up without even trying. 36. The phrase get themselves down (Para. 1, Line 3) probably means _. A. tell lies B. lose confidence C. avoid dangers D. waste time37. When the two students dropped out, no one took much notice because _. a) they had long lost heart in class performance b) they were absent from class too oftenc) they didnt get on well with other studentsd) they were so much cut off from the rest of the class38. The author thinks that the two students should _.A. give up their college education B. learn from other students C. feel happy because they are in college D. try hard before giving up 40. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.Do women talk more than men? According to professor Deborah Tannen, of Georgetown University, men and women talk such different languages that it is like people from two different cultures trying to communicate. Professor Deborah Tannen has noticed differences in the style of boys and girls conversation from an early age. She says that little girls conversation is less certain than boys and expresses more doubts. These differences continue into adult life, she says. In public (公眾) conversations, men talk most and interrupt other speakers more. In private (私人的) conversations, men and women speak in more or less the same amountalthough they say things in a different style. Professor Tannen believes that, for women, private talking is a way to test closeness in relationship. For men, it is a way to build up the power (權(quán)威) of a relationship. Teaching is one job where the differences between mens and womens ways of talking show. When a man teaches a woman, he wants to show that he has more knowledge, and so more power in conversation. He uses his language to show this. When a woman teaches another woman, however, she is more likely to encourage her students to join in. But Professor Tannen does not believe that women are naturally (天生地) more helpful. She says women feel they can build up power by being able to help others. 41. According to Professor Deborah Tannen, the styles men and women talk are _. A. quite similar B. rather different C. very colorful D. somewhat changeable42. In a private conversation, it is often true that _. a) a woman will test her power in her relationship with the listener. b) a man will try to build up a close relationship with the listener. c) a woman will take the lead of the talk.d) a mans talk is similar to that of a woman in a mouth.45.
