閱讀作業(yè)五When I taught at Saint Marys School in Morris, Minn, I had a really unusual student named Mark Elkland. He was then in the first third grade class, in which all 34 of my students were 16 to me, and Mark was the dearest of all. Very neat in appearance, he had that happy-be-alive attitude that made 17 his occasional bad behaviors delightful.Mark often talked in class. I had to 18 him again and again that talking without permission was not 19 .What impressed me so much, 20 , was his sincere 21 every time I had to correct him for his misbehavior “Thank you for correcting me, Sister !” I didnt know what to make of it at first, but before long I became 22 at hearing it so many times a day.One morning my 23 was giving out when Mark talked once too often, and then I made a(n) 24 -teachers mistake I looked at him and said, “If you say one more word, I am going to 25 your mouth shut !”It was barely ten seconds 26 Chuck, a boy sitting behind Mark, cried out, “Mark is talking again!” I hadnt asked any of the students to help me 27 Mark, but since I had stated the 28 in front of the class, I had to 29 on it.I remembered the 30 as if it had occurred yesterday. I walked to my desk very 31 , opened my drawer and took out a roll of masking tape . Without saying a word , I walked to Marks desk , took off two pieces of tape and 32 a big X with them over his mouth . I then returned to the front of the room.As I glanced at Mark to see how he was doing, he winkled at me . That did it !I started laughing . The class cheered as I walked back to Marks desk , 33 the tape and shrugged my shoulders . To my 34 , his 35 words still were, “Thank you for correcting me , Sister.”16Apolite Bimportant Crude Ddear 17Aeven Bjust ConlyDonce 18Aremind Bpersuade CstopDcorrect 19Aagreeable Bacceptable Cconsiderable Dsuitable 20Ahowever Btherefore Cbut Dyet 21AreplyBway Cresponse Dlook 22Aangry Bbored Csatisfied Dannoyed 23Aperseverance Bpatience Clove Dstrength 24Agood BstrictCinexperienced Dimmoral 25Alet Btie CleaveDtape26AbeforeBwhenCuntilDand 27ApunishBfollowCscoldDwatch28AmeasureBpunishmentCdecisionDannouncement 29Aact BplayCstandDwork 30AsignBviewCsightDscene31AnervouslyBsadlyCbravelyDseriously32AdrawBmadeCcoveredDhung33AtightenedBremoved CfastenedDtore34AdisappointmentBjoyCamusementDanger35AeagerBfirst CjoyfulDthankful DAABA CBBCD ADBAD DBBCBA(2010山東A)Christopher Thomas, 27, was a writer by night and a teacher by day when he noticed he was always tired and was losing weight fast. A few dogs started barking at it. The elephant woke up in a terrible anger: it chased the dogs into the village where they ran for safety. That didnt stop the elephant. It destroyed a dozen houses and injured several people. The villagers were scared and angry. Then someone suggested calling Parbati, the elephant princess. Parbati Baruas father was a hunter of tigers and an elephant tamer. He taught Parbati to ride an elephant before she could even walk. He also taught her the dangerous art of the elephant round-up - how to catch wild elephants. Parbati hasnt always lived in the jungle. After a happy childhood hunting with her father, she was sent to boarding school in the city. But Parbati never got used to being there and many years later she went back to her old fife. Life in the city is too dull. Catching elephants is an adventure and the excitement lasts for days after the chase, she says. But Parbati doesnt catch elephants just for fun. My work, she says, is to rescue man from the elephants, and to keep the elephants safe from man. And this is exactly what Parbati has been doing for many years. Increasingly, the Indian elephant is angry: for many years, illegal hunters have attacked it and its home in the jungle has been reduced to small pieces of land. It is now fighting back. Whenever wild elephants enter a tea garden or a village, Parbati is called to guide the animals back to the jungle before they can kill. The work of an elephant tamer also involves love and devotion. A good elephant tamer will spend hours a day singing love songs to a newly captured elephant. Eventually they grow to love their tamers and never forget them. They are also more loyal than humans, she said, as she climbed up one of her elephants and sat on the giant, happy animal. An elephant princess indeed!1. He was so busy dreaming about all the fish he would catch that he was unaware of everything else around him.He rode along until a strange sound drew him to the present. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the heavens. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and the buzzing mass seemed to be heading angrily towards him. With no time to waste, Andy sped off in the opposite direction, riding furiously but without knowing how to escape the swarm. With a rapidly beating heart and his legs pumping furiously, he sped down the rough road. As the bees came closer, his panic increased. Andy knew that he was sensitive to bee stings (蜇). The last sting had landed him in hospital and that was only one bee sting! He had been forced to stay in bed for two whole days. Suddenly, his fathers words came to him. “When you are in a tight situation, dont panic. Use your brain and think your way out of it.”O(jiān)n a nearby hill, he could see smoke waving slowly skywards from the chimney of the Nelson family home. “Bees dont like smoke,” he thought. “They couldnt get into the house.” Andy raced towards the Nelson house, but the bees were gaining ground. Andy knew he could not reach the house in time. He estimated that the bees would catch up with him soon.Suddenly, out of the corner of his eyes, he spotted a small dam used by Mr. Nelson to irrigate his vegetable garden. Off his bike and into the cool water he dived, disappearing below the surface and away from the savage insects. After holding his breath for as long as he could, Andy came up for air and noticed the bees had gone. Dragging himself out of the dam, he struggled up the hilly slope and rang the doorbell. Mrs. Nelson took him inside and rang his mother.“Youll really
