multinationalcorporationheadquarteredinCincinnati,Ohio,thatmanufacturesawiderangeofconsumergoods.Asof2008,P&Gisthe8thlargestcorporationintheworldbymarketcapitalizationand14thlargestUScompanybyprofit.Itis10thinFortune'sMostAdmiredCompanieslist(asof2007).[2][3]P&Giscreditedwithmanybusinessinnovationsincludingbrandmanagementandthesoapopera.AccordingtotheNielsenCompany,in2007P&GspentmoreonU.S.advertisingthananyothercompany;the$2.62billionspentbyP&GisalmosttwiceasmuchasthatspentbyGeneralMotors,thenextcompanyontheNielsenlist.[4]P&Gwasnamed2008AdvertiseroftheYearbyCannesInternationalAdvertisingFestival.HistoryWilliamProcter,acandlemaker,andJamesGamble,asoapmaker,immigrantsfromEnglandandIreland,respectively,whohadsettledearlierinCincinnati,whometastheybothmarriedsisters,OliviaandElizabethNorris,[6]formedthecompanyinitially.AlexanderNorris,theirfather-inlaw,calledameetinginwhichhepersuadedhisnewsons-in-lawtobecomebusinesspartners.OnOctober31,1837,asaresultofthesuggestion,Procter&Gamblewasborn.In1859,salesreachedonemilliondollars.Bythispoint,approximatelyeightyemployeesworkedforProcter&Gamble.DuringtheAmericanCivilWar,thecompanywoncontractstosupplytheUnionArmywithsoapandcandles.Inadditiontotheincreasedprofitsexperiencedduringthewar,themilitarycontractsintroducedsoldiersfromalloverthecountrytoProcter&Gamble'sproducts.Inthe1880s,Procter&Gamblebegantomarketanewproduct,aninexpensivesoapthatfloatsinwater.ThecompanycalledthesoapIvory.WilliamArnettProcter,WilliamProcter'sgrandson,beganaprofit-sharingprogramforthecompany'sworkforcein1887.Bygivingtheworkersastakeinthecompany,hecorrectlyassumedthattheywouldbelesslikelytogoonstrike.ThecompanybegantobuildfactoriesinotherlocationsintheUnitedStatesbecausethedemandforproductshadoutgrownthecapacityoftheCincinnatifacilities.Thecompany'sleadersbegantodiversifyitsproductsaswelland,in1911,beganproducingCrisco,ashorteningmadeofvegetableoilsratherthananimalfats.Asradiobecamemorepopularinthe1920sand1930s,thecompanysponsoredanumberofradioprograms.Asaresult,theseshowsoftenbecamecommonlyknownas"soapoperas".
Numerousnewproductsandbrandnameswereintroducedovertime,andProcter&Gamblebeganbranchingoutintonewareas.Thecompanyintroduced"Tide"laundrydetergentin1946and"Prell"shampooin1947.In1955,Procter&Gamblebegansellingthefirsttoothpastetocontainfluoride,knownas"Crest".Branchingoutonceagainin1957,thecompanypurchasedCharminPaperMillsandbeganmanufacturingtoiletpaperandotherpaperproducts.Onceagainfocusingonlaundry,Procter&Gamblebeganmaking"Downy"fabricsoftenerin1960and"Bounce"fabricsoftenersheetsin1972.Oneofthemostrevolutionaryproductstocomeoutonthemarketwasthecompany's"Pampers",firsttest-marketedin1961.Priortothispointdisposablediaperswerenotpopular,althoughJohnson&Johnsonhaddevelopedaproductcalled"Chux".Babiesalwaysworeclothdiapers,whichwereleakyandlaborintensivetowash.Pampersprovidedaconvenientalternative.Procter&GamblebrandsTwenty-fourofP&G's
