NANJING

LocatedattheeasternpartofChina,NanjingisthecapitalofjiangsuProvincewhichisdevelopedineconomyinChinaandanimportantcentralcityonthemiddleandlowerreachesoftheYangtseRiver.Nanjing,isChinaoneofthesevenancientcapital.Tangshanintheeasternsuburbsoftheape-manskullunearthed,showsthat35millionyearsago,thereisa"manofNanjing"canbefound.NanjingbearsthereputationoftheCapitalofTenDynasties,beingsincetheyear229ADthecapitalofWu,EasternJin,Song,Qi,Liang,Chen,SouthernTang,Ming,TaipingKingdom,andRepublicofChinasubsequently.

Nowadays,Nanjinghasdevelopedintoamultiple-producingindustrialbaseineasternChina,animportanthuboftransportationandcommunicationcenter,oneofChina'sfourmajorscientificresearchandeducationalcentralcities.

Industry

NanjingisanimportantindustrialbaseofChinawhereamulti-producingindustrialsystemtakingelectronics,automobiles,chemicalsandanumberofspecialproductsastheleadingfactorsandhaving36industrialtrades,over200industrialbranchesandmorethan2,000categoriesofproductshavebeenestablished.Theindustrialoutputvalueofthewholecityin1995amountedto81,800millionyuan,a24.4%increaseoverthepreviousyear,andtheratioofoutputtosalesreached96.4%whichtooktheleadthroughouttheprovince.

CommerceandFinance

NanjingisamajorinternationalcommercialportintheYangtsedeltaregion,secondonlytoShanghai.Thetotalturnoverofretailsalesofthesocialconsumergoodsin1995amountedto24billionyuan,a27%growthoverthepreviousyear,rankingamongtenmajorcitiesofthecountry.Themonetarymarketplaysanimportantcontrollingroleintheeconomicoperationofthecity.

TransportationandCommunication

Fivemeansoftransportationsuchasrailway,waterway,airtransportandpipingconstituteathree-dimensionalandmasstransportvolumetrafficnetworkinanall-roundway.NanjingPortisaportforforeigntradeleadingtotheocean.Theportareais98kilometresinfulllengthandhas64berthsincluding16berthsforshipswithatonnageofmorethan10,000.WithintheboundaryofNanjing,thereareover60highwaylong-distancepassengertrafficlinesleadingtoallpartsoftheprovince;theTianjin-Pukou,Shanghai-NanjingandNanjing-WuhuTrunkRailwaysmeetinNanjingwhichhasbecomeanimportanthubofrailwayslinkingnorthChina,eastChinawithcentralChina.Afterextension,theNanjingAirporthasmorethan20airlinesleadingtoallmajorcitiesinthecountry.Withthestartofconstructionofthenewairport,Nanjingwillhaveaninternationalmodernizedairport.Beingoneofsixmajortelecommunicationhubsinthecountry,Nanjinghasatelecommunicationnetworkwhichiscomposedofmultiplemodesandlinkingwithallpartsofthecountryandallcountriesintheworld.

Nanjingiswellknownathomeandabroad.NowithasenteredintoamicalrelationswithNagoyaofJapan,FlorenceofItaly,SaintLouisoftheUnitedStates,EindhovenoftheNetherlands,LeipzigofGermany,MecicaliofMexico,LimassolofCyprusandDaijunoftheRepublicofKoreatomakeanextensiveexchangeandcooperationinthefieldsofeconomy,trade,scienceandtechnologyandculture,andjoinedtheTranspacificTechnicalcooperationNetworkasoneoftwomembercitiesfromChina.

ForeignEconomicRelationsandTrade

Thetotalpurchasingvalueofcommodityforforeigntradein1995amountedto6.718billionyuan,a41.5%growthoverthepreviousyear;thedeliveryvalueofexportcommodityforforeigntradeamountedto8.4billionyuan,up40%;theactualexportamountedto0.808billionUSdollars,up46.4%.Bytheendof1995,4119foreign-investedenterprisesintotalhavebeenapprovedbythegovernmentofNanjingCity,including663enterprisesnewly-approvedin1995andtheforeigninvestorsinNanjingcamefrom50countriesandregions.Thecontractsforconstructionprojectsabroadandcooperationoflabourservicein1995amountedto64.84millionUSdollarsup43.6%.68non-tradingunitshavebeenestablishedabroad.

ScienceandTechnology

InNanjingthereareover460naturalscienceresearchinstitutionswithmorethan320,000technicalpersonnelofdifferentspecialitiesandover40socialscienceresearchinstitutionswithmorethan50,000researchers.Thescientificandtechnologicalstrengththereofranksthirdinthecountry.291majorachievementshavebeenmadeinthefieldsofscienceandtechnologythroughoutthecityin1995,ofwhich6%areuptotheinternationalstandardand42%areuptothedomesticadvancedstandard.

Tourism

Nanjingisveryrichinnaturalandartificiallandscapesandoneofthefirst24well-knownhistoricandculturalcitiesannouncedbythestate.Dr.SunYat-Sen'sMausoleum,theMingTomb,theKingPalaceofTaipingHeavenlyKingdom,theancientcitywallofNanjing,thestonecarvingsofSouthernTangDynasty,PagodaforBuddistRelics,theTombsofSouthernTangEmperors,theRainFlowerTerrace,theMuralPaintinginTangziStreetandotherplacesarethemainscenicspotsandhistoricsites.TheEasternSuburbsScenicArea,theQixiaMountain,theXuanwuLak
