forthatit’safullmoondaywhichsymbolizesfamilyreunion.Thefestivalfoodismooncake,soanotherpopularnameis“ChineseMoonCakeFestival”.Inrecentyears,itsChinesename“zhongqiujie”

alsogetsmoreandmorepopularworldwide.

03ThefullmoonmaynotoccuronMid-AutumnDay.OneoftheinterestingfactsaboutMid-AutumnFestivalisthatthefullmoondoesn’talwaysshowonthe15thdayofthe8thlunarmonth.Infact,itispossiblethatthefullmoonisonthe14th,16th,or17thdayofthe8thlunarmonth.Accordingtotheastronomicalrule,thenewmoonmayshowupindifferenttimesofthefirstdayofeachlunarmonthandittakeslessthan15daysforanewmoontobecomeafullmoon.Ifthenewmoonshowsatearlymorningofthefirstdayof8thlunarmonth,thefullmoonmayshowuponthe14thor15thdayof8thlunarmonth;whileitshowsatnight,thefullmoonmayshowuponthe16thdayoreven17thday.04ItwasoncetheValentine’sDayinancientChina.PeoplenowwidelyconsiderQixiFestivalasChineseValentine’sDay.However,afunfactisthattheMid-AutumnFestivalisalsoavalentine’sdayatthebeginning.InChinesemythology,theGodoftheMoonisinchargeofloveandmarriage.Hecreateslovebetweenboysandgirlsbytyingthemtogetherwithamagicsilklinethatcannotbeseenbyordinarypeople.Sothefestivaltoworshipthemoonisoriginallyafestivaltoprayforloveandhappymarriage.Tilltoday,inwestHunan,thereisaspecialcustomthatgirls“steal”

vegetablesfromthevegetablegardenoftheirlovedboyswhenthefullmoonshows,andtheboyswillbeinvitedtogirls’

05Thefestival’soriginmayrelatetotheimperialexaminationinancienttime.OneofMid-AutumnFestivalfunfactsisthatMid-AutumnFestivalhasasubtlerelationwiththeancientimperialexaminations.Inthefeudal(封建的)society,imperialexaminationswerearrangedintheeighthlunarmonth.Peoplewouldcelebratewithexamineewhopasstheexam.Thiscustomhasgraduallyevolvedintotheimportantfestivalthathasprevailedovertheages.燃燈06The“mooncake”

wasnamedbyConcubineYangoftheTangDynasty.AnotherMid-AutumnFestivalfunfactisthatthemooncakewasoncecalled“HuCake”.OneyearofMid-AutumnFestivalnight,LiLongji,anemperorofTangDynasty(618-907AD),andhisConcubineYangwereeatingHucakes.LiLongjithoughtthatthenameof“HuCake”

wasnotgood.ThebrightmoonintheskyinspiredConcubineYang,andthenshesaid“mooncake”

wasbetter.Fromthenon,thename“mooncake”
