Thelittleprince,throughapilot'snarrationofhisamazingencounterwithalittleprince,tellsusastoryofthelittleprincetravellingaroundfromhisplanettotheearth,visitingallkindsofcreatures(生物,人與動物植物).Usingthemostsimpleandperfectlyunderstandablelanguage,itrevealsthemostpreciousandmeaningfulvaluesoflifetome.TheminuteIreadthefirstline,Iamdestined(吸收)tobedeeplytouchedandinvolvedbythesimpleandfunnystory.IhavewonderedforanextremelylongtimeabouthowtoexpresswhatIhavethoughtaboutthisbookwhichmeanssomuchthatIreallyfeelalittleafraidofruiningthismasterpiecewithmysuperficial(膚淺的)understanding,andhumbleideas.Classicthingsarealwaysforyoutorespect.Truly,thisbookisafairy-tale,butitcouldn’tbebettertobeaguidebooktothosewhohavelostthemselvesintheirspiritualworlds.Thereviewofthebook.TheLittlePrinceisawell-knownnovel.Inthestorythelittleprince,themaincharacterinthebook,camefromaplanetwhichwasscarcelyanylargerthanahouse.Headmiredabeautifulflowerontheplanetbuthewastooyoungtoknowhowtoloveher.Therefore,hedecidedtoleavetheplanetandtraveledtootherplanets.Onthejourney,hemetvariouskindsofpeople.Forexample,hemetaking.Whoinsistedthathisauthorityshouldberespectedandhetoleratednodisobedience.Healsometaconceitedman,atippler,abusinessmanwhoclaimedforthepossessionofstarsonthesky.Moreover,hemetalamplighterandageographer,whoseviewsoflifemadehimquiteconfused.Finally,hecametotheearth,wherelivedalotofpeoplewhowereliketheking,theconceitedman,thetippler,thebusinessman,thelamplighterandthegeographer.Healsometaslysnakeandafox.Theytaughtthelittleprincewhatthetruelovewas.Withtherealizationofthetruelovebetweenhimandtheflower,thelittleprincesaidgoodbyetothenarratorandwentbackhome.Besides,therearesomemeaningfulsentencesinthisbook.Forexample,thefoxtoldthelittleprince,“Theeyesareblind.Onemustlookwiththeheart.It’sonlywiththeheartthatonecanseerightly;whatisessentialisinvisibletotheeye.”Iagreewiththepoint.Weshouldknowpeoplewiththeheartnotwitheyes.1.1Abriefintroductionoftheauthor---AntoinedeSaint-ExupérySaint-ExupérywasborninLyonin1900.Duringhismilitaryservice,helearnedtopilotairplanes.Afterhismilitaryservice,hepresentedhimselftothedirectorofanAirlinecompanyandexpressedtohimhisdesiretobecomeapilot.
FirstSaint-Exupéryworkedtobecomeamechanic.In1927,hewasthepilotofaformation.HecompleteddangerousmissionsovertheMediterraneanandovertheSahara.Hehadmanyaccidentsoverthemiddleofthedesert.Later,hewasnamedthedirectorofhisownaviationcompanyinSouthAmerica.AndhealsoaccomplishedmanydangerousmissionsovertheAndes.
In1939,FrancewenttowarwithGermany.Saint-Exuperyenlistedimmediatelyinthearmy.Saint-Exupérydidn’tacceptthedefeat.HedecidedtoleaveFrance.HesettledintheUnitedStates,wherehecontinuedtowrite.ItwasinNewYorkthathepublishedthelittleprince,oneofhismostcelebrated(有名的,知名的)books.1.2Theplotsummaryofthebook.TheLittlePrinceisastoryoftheencounterofapilot,whohascrashedintheAfricandesert,andalittleprincehaslandedonearthfarawayfromhisplanetwhichcanbeseenaboveasasmallstar.Awould-beartistatsixyearsofage,thepilothadthatcareerthwartedbythelackofimaginationofgrown-upswhocouldnotunderstand,withoutexplanation,hisdrawingofaboaconstrictoreatinganelephant,makinghimconcludethattheyareincapableofrecognizingimportanceinanythingexceptwhatliesonthesurface.Thelittleprince,throughtherelatingofhisownproblems,askingthepilottodrawhimasheep,awakensthepilottohisownrestrictedsenseofwhatisimportant,inducinghimtoconcludethatheisnowlikethegrown-ups,too.Theprincespeaksofhisplanet,withthebaobabsproutsthathehastodigupeverydaylesttheyshouldtakeovertheplanet;hespeakswithgreatpassionofhisspecialrose,theonlyoneofitskindduetohisdedicationtoitswell-beingregardlessofitstaunting.Thelittleprincealsorelateshisjourneytoearth,stoppingonthewayatdifferentasteroidsonwhichgrown-ups(aking,abusinessman,andadrunkardamongothers),appeartohimverystrangebecauseoftheirresolvedapplicationtothingsthatareonlyquantifiableandhavenoultimatepurpose.Hespeaksofthetimehespentwiththefox,learningtheartoftamingandrites,whichturnswhatiscommonintoauniquerelationship.Thepilotlearnstolovethelittleprince,asthelatterlovestherose.Atthesametimethepilothasrepairedhisplane,thelittleprinceisalsoreadytoreturntohisplanet,throughtheelixirofasnake’spoison.Yettheseparationisonlyphysical,fortamingcreatesbondsthatendurethroughtimeandspace,suchthatthestarstheyeachgazeuponwillremindthemofeachother.1.3Ageneralcommentaryofthenovel.Seeminglyachildren'sbook,itmakesseveralprofoundandidealisticpointsaboutlifeandlove.Init,Saint-ExupéryimagineshimselfstrandedintheSaharaDesert,thousandsofkilometersawayfrominhabitedplaces,wherehemeetsayoungextra-terrestrialprince.Intheirconversations,theauthorrevealshisownviewsaboutthefolliesofmankindandthesimpletruthsthatpeopleseemtoforgetastheygrowolder.Therearealsotwoothermainpointsinthebook,bothofwhichspokenbythefox.Theyare:"Youbecomeresponsible,forever,forwhatyouhavetamed"and"Itisthetimeyouhavespentonyourrosethatmakesyourrosesoimportant".Throughoutthebookthechildren'sviewontheworld,onthemainpointsofthehumanlifeandrelationsbetweenpeople,whichisrepresentedbyTheLittlePrinceandpartiallybythenarrator,issetoffagainstthe"grown-ups"revealedinmemoriesofthenarratorandinthecharacters,metbythelittleprinceonasteroids.Buttheauthorunderlines,thatthe“grown-ups”arelikethat.Onemustnotholditagainstthem.Childrenshouldalwaysshowgreatforbearancetowardsgrown-uppeople.
2.Thecharactersandthesymbolicmeaningofimages.Throughoutthebook,Saint-Exupéryisverycriticalofmanyofthecharacteristicsofmankind.Heclaimsthathumansaretoopreoccupiedwithwealth,power,andtechnology,whichmakesthemmisstheimportantthingsinlife--beauty,love,andfriendship.Becausetheydonotinvestthetimeinlovingothersandnoticingthesmallwondersoftheworld,peoplerushfromplacetoplaceinsearchofsomething;butsincetheylookforthewrongthings,theyareneverhappywithwheretheyareandrushonwardagain,muchlikethetrainsthattheswitchmancontrols.Peoplearealsodupedintobelievingthatfactsandfiguresareimportant,justlikethegeographer.However,thefactsoftenhidethetruthandcauseapersontomissoutonthetruemeaningoflife.Inasimilarmanner,whenahumansucceedsandaccumulatessomewealth,theyspendalloftheirtimecountingtheirassetsinsteadofinvestingitintheimportantthingsoflife.Whentheyfinallyrealizetheirliveshavenomeaning,peoplethenturntocrutches,suchasalcohol,believingthatthesethingscansupplytheanswer;intruth,theansweralwaysliesinsideifapersonwillonlyseekthetruthbeneaththesurface.2.1ThecharactersThemainthemeofTheLittlePrinceistheimportanceoflookingbeneaththesurfacetofindtherealtruthandmeaningofathing.ItisthefoxwhoteachesthePrincetoseewithone’sheartinsteadofjustwithone’seyes.Unfortunately,mostadultshavedifficultiesindoingthis.Inthebeginningofthebook,thenarratorpointsouthowgrown-upscanneverseetherealmeaningofadrawing;instead,theylookatthesurface,failingtoprobeadeepermeaning.Next,I’llanalysisofthemajorcharactersofthefollowingimages,thenarrator,thelittleprince,thefox,thesnake,thebaobabtree.Thisessayisdesignedtochallengeastudent'sunderstandingofthebroadpointsinawork,interactionsamongthecharacters,andmainpointsandthemesofthetext.But,theyalsocovermanyoftheotherissuesspecifictotheworkandtotheworldtoday.Itisinthischildren'sbookthatIfoundtheessentialmeaningoflife.2.1.1ThenarratorThenarratorofTheLittlePrinceisanadultinyears,butheexplainsthathewasrejuvenatedsixyearsearlierafterhecrashedhisplaneinthedesert.Hewasanimaginativechildwhosefirstdrawingwasacrypticinterpretationofaboaconstrictorthathadswallowedanelephant.Eventually,heabandonedartforthegrown-upprofessionofpilot,andhelivesalonelylifeuntilheencountersthelittleprince.Heservesastheprince’sconfidenceandrelaystheprince’sstorytous,butthenarratorisreallytheauthor,AntoinedeSaint-Exupéry.Thenarratorispresentthroughoutthebooktotellthestoryofhisfriendshipwiththelittleprinceandcommentonwhathehaslearnedfromhim.HeisveryattractedtothePrince,largelybecauseheischildlike,innocent,andpure.Thenarratoradmitsthathepreferstheopenness,honesty,andnaivetéofchildrentothepretensionsandblindnessofadults,whocannotseebeyondthesurfaceoflife.Thenarratorfeelsveryclosetothelittleprincebecauseheisabletoseethetruthandimportanceofthings.Evenaftersixyears,herememberseverythingaboutthislittlemanfromanotherplanet;asaresult,hewritesthebookinmemoryofhim.Eversincechildhood,thenarratorhasfeltfrustratedwithadults.Asayoungboy,hedrewpicturesofaboaconstrictoreatinganelephant,butnoneoftheadultscouldseetherealmeaningbeyondthesurfaceofthepicture.Theyallclaimedthedrawinglookedlikeahat.Whenthenarratorexplainedwhatthepicturereallywas,theadultssuggestedthathegiveupdrawingandpurposehisacademicstudies.Whenthenarratorshowsthelittleprinceadrawingofaboaeatinganelephant,heimmediatelyrecognizesitforwhatitis.Thenarratorisgreatlyimpressedandinstantlylikesthelittleprince.Thenarrator’sairplanecrashesintothedesert.Whileheistryingtorepairit,thelittleprincesuddenlyappearsandaskshimtodrawapictureofasheepforhim.Soonastrongbondoffriendshipdevelopsbetweenthetwoofthem.2.1.2ThelittleprinceThenovelisnamedafterthelittleprince,whoisamysticalandloveableperson.Heisachildwholivesinaverysmallworld.Heisverycuriousandneverletgoofaquestion,oncehehadaskedit.
ThelittleprinceisapureandinnocenttravelerfromouterspacewhomthenarratorencountersintheSaharadesert.BeforethelittleprincelandsonEarth,Saint-Exupérycontraststheprince’schildlikecharacterwithdifferentadultcharactersbyhavingtheprincehopfromoneneighboringplanettoanother.Oneachplanet,theprincemeetsadifferenttypeofadultandrevealsthatcharacter’sfrivolitiesandweaknesses.OnceonEarth,however,thelittleprincebecomesastudentaswellasateacher.Fromhisfriendthefox,thelittleprincelearnswhatloveentails,andinturnhepassesonthoselessonstothenarrator.

2.1.6ThebaobabtreeOnthelittleprince’splanettherewere“terribleseeds…baobabseeds”thatinfestedthesoil.Hewasmostearnesttofindoutastowhetherthesheepwouldeatbaobabsornot.Ifthesproutswerenotduguporeatensoonenoughtheywouldovergrowtheentireplanetandtheir“rootspiercerightthrough”.Thisenquirycarriesasenseofurgencythathasgreaterimplicationsthanmeetstheeye.Justasgoodandbadseedslielatentinthesoil,sotoodoseedsofunknownpotentiallieintherecessesofthemind.Shouldthegoodseedssproutandgrow,thenthethoughts,theimagination,freeoffetters,giveforthwondrousfruits.However,shouldtheimaginationbethwartedbytheconstrictionsofthetangibleworld,byoveremphasisontheimportanceofthosethingsthatbearonlyuponoursenses,thenindeed,“it’salwaysacatastrophe”?Itistheresultofthe“seedofabadplant”thathasnotbeenrecognizedearlyenough.If“youattendtoabaobabtoolate,youcannevergetridofitagain”,foronceithasgrown,noforce,(notevenelephants),canremoveitbecauseithassentitsrootssodeep.Thegrown-upslikethosewhodon’trecognizedrawingNumberOnehavehadtheirimaginationsstifledbythebaobabtrees,bythelimitationsofthephysicalrealm.Theyresemblethelazymanwhoseplanetwasovertakenbybaobabs.Hehad“neglectedthreebushes”and,asshownintheillustration,hisentireplanetisconstrictedbytherootsofthebaobabtrees…justasaboaconstrictshisprey…likeamindisconstrictedbythetangible.Theartistvividlyconveysthebiggestofhisdrawingsduetohisown“senseofurgency”regardingthematter.Hefeelstheresponsibilityofalertingthechildren,atthebehestoftheprince,to“adangerwhichthey,likeme,havelongbeenunaware”.Fortheartisthimself,washenot,unabletoseea“sheepthroughthesidesofacrate”.2.2AnalysisthesymbolicmeaningofTheLittlePrince
