Thegreatship,Titanic,sailedforNewYorkfromSouthampton

onApril10th,1912.Shewascarrying1316passengersandacrew

of891.Evenbymodernstandards,the46,000tonTitanicwas

acolossalship.Atthattime,however,shewasnotonlythe

largestshipthathadeverbeenbuilt,butwasregardedas

unsinkable,forshehadsixteenwatertightcompartments.Even

iftwoofthesewereflooded,shewouldstillbeabletofloat.

Thetragicsinkingofthisgreatlinerwillalwaysberemembered,

forshewentdownonherfirstvoyagewithheavylossoflife.

Fourdaysaftersettingout,whiletheTitanicwassailing

acrosstheicywatersoftheNorthAtlantic,ahugeicebergwas

suddenlyspottedbyalook-out.Afterthealarmhadbeengiven,

thegreatshipturnedsharplytoavoidadirectcollision.The

Titanicturnedjustintime,narrowlymissingtheimmensewall

oficewhichroseover100feetoutofthewaterbesideher.

Suddenly,therewasaslighttremblingsoundfrombelow,and

thecaptainwentdowntoseewhathadhappened.Thenoisehad

beensofaintthatnoonethoughtthattheshiphadbeendamaged.

Below,thecaptainrealizedtohishorrorthattheTitanicwas

sinkingrapidly,forfiveofhersixteenwatertight

compartmentshadalreadybeenflooded!Theordertoabandon

shipwasgivenandhundredsofpeopleplungedintotheicywater.

Astherewerenotenoughlife-boatsforeverybody,1500lives

werelost.
