Gershwinhimselfplayedthepianoattheconcert.Theaudiencewere

thrilledwhentheyheardhismusic.Itmadehimworld-famousand

showedthatjazzmusiccouldbebothseriousandpopular.In1928,

GershwinwenttoParis.Heappliedtostudycompositionwiththe

well-knownmusicianNadiaBoulanger,butsherejectedhim.Shewas

afraidthatclassicalstudywouldruinhisjazz-influencedstyle.

Whilethere,GershwinwroteAnAmericaninParis.Whenitwasfirst

performed,criticsweredividedoverthemusic.Somecalledithappy
