Europe.StudiesbytheCouncilofEurope,ofwhich21countiesaremembers,haveshownthat45percentofreptile(爬行

EuropeanconcernforwildlifewasoutlinedbyDrPeterBaum,anexpertintheenvironmentandnaturalresources
divisionofthecouncil,whenhespokeataconferencearrangedbytheadministratorsofaBritishnationalpark.Theparkis
oneofthefewareasinEuropetoholdthecounciPsdiplomafornaturereservesofthehighestquality,andDr.PeterBaum
hadcometopresentittotheparkonceagain.Hewasafraidthatpublicopinionwasturningagainstnationalparks,and
thatthosesetupinthe1960sand1970scouldnotbesetuptoday.ButDr.Baumclearlyremainedastrongsupporterof
theviewthatnaturalenvironmentsneededtobeallowedtosurviveinpeaceintheirownright.

fictionwriter,ArthurC.Clarke,manyofwhosepreviouspredictionshavecometrue,saidthatwemaysoonbeableto
developremarkablycheapandrenewablesourcesofenergy.Someofthesepowersourceswillbebiological.Clarkeand
othershavewarnedusrepeatedlythatsoonerorlaterwewillhavetogiveupourdependenceonnon-renewablepower
sources.Coal,oilandgasareindeedconvenient.However,usingthemalsomeanscreatingdangerouslyhighlevelsof
pollution.Itwillbeimpossibletomeetthegrowingdemandforenergywithoutincreasingthatpollutiontocatastrophic
(災(zāi)難性的)levelsunlesswedeveloppowersourcesthatarebothcheaperandcleaner.
Itisattemptingtothinkthatbiotechnologyorsomeother"scienceofthefuturecansolveourproblems.Beforewe
