wasfinishedwithhisdesign,JeffersonhadinventedanentirelynewAmericansettingforhighereducation:
thecollegecampus.
In1812,Jeffersonchosetobeginbuildinghis"academicalvillage,"theUniversityofVirginia,in
Charlottesville,VA,farawayfromthecitycenter.Heintendedthisspottopromotelearningbecauseit
wasnaturalandunspoiled,andfarfromanythingthatcoulddistractorharmthestudents.TheUniversity
consistsoftworowsofhouses,fiveoneachside,leadingtoamainbuilding.Thismainbuilding,the
Rotunda,becamethemostimportantpartoftheUniversity,becauseitcontainedthelibrary.Byfocusing
hisentireinstitutiononthelibrary,insteadofaroundthechurch,JeffersonrevolutionizedAmerican
universityarchitecture.
Jefferson'saimwastocreateanewinstitutionalformforhisidealeducationalsystem,asystemhe
thoughtshouldgiveeverycitizentheinformationheneedsforcarryingouthisdailybusiness.Thisnew
approachtocitizenshipandeducationdemandedanewtypeofuniversity,onewherestudentsand
professorscouldcoexistandshareideas.Heattemptedtocreatethisenvironmentbycombiningthe
professors*housesandstudents'classrooms,andlinkingallthebuildingswithcoveredwalkwaysso
