巨石陣是個謎樣的遺跡，一千多個遺跡幾乎遍布了整個英倫地區(qū)。這些巨大而高聳的石塊，被豎立在荒野，在山腳，甚至在過去的沼澤地區(qū)，而共通的特色是當?shù)夭⒉皇鞘瘓?，這些石塊就如同金字塔的石塊一樣，是從遠處遷運過來的。

數(shù)千年前的人似乎對石頭頗有一套辦法，他們不僅能輕松地搬運它們，而且能隨心所欲地切割它們，安置它們，將它們放置到準確的位置上。巨石陣的建造者，將原本粗糙的表面刨光后，銳利的邊緣也會磨掉成平滑的弧度。他們還會精巧地挖出孔洞，讓木樁能夠穿過。

現(xiàn)代考古學家們認為，這些石陣有某種歷法和宗教上的目的，到目前為止，并沒有直接的文獻或紀錄，可以證明這件事情。但是考古學家們研究的結(jié)果，似乎可以稍稍解釋出秘密的一部份。Stonehenge位于英格蘭島南部Wilshire省，是最有名的巨石陣。根據(jù)推算，它已經(jīng)有四千年以上的歷史。巨石陣距離索爾斯巴利（Sailsbury）約十六公里，現(xiàn)在所剩下的石頭大大小小約有三十八個。石頭因為經(jīng)過長時間的風吹日曬，表面產(chǎn)生了許多奇形怪狀的凹洞。巨石陣排列成一個同心圓的型態(tài)，石塊大致為長方形，但卻直立在地面之上，高度超過十三英尺。而在相鄰的石塊之上，還有另外一塊石頭橫躺在頂部，或橫跨兩塊，或四塊，排列成一幅奇特的圖案?；艚鹚拐J為，巨石陣中幾個重要的位置，似乎都是用來指示太陽在夏至那天升起的位置。而從反方向看剛好就是冬至日太陽降下的位置。除了太陽之外，月亮的起落點似乎也有記載。不過月亮的運行不是像太陽一樣年年周而復始，它有一個歷時十九年的太陰歷。在靠近石陣入口處有四十多個柱孔，排成六行，恰巧和月亮在周期中到達最北的位置相符，所以六行柱孔很有可能代表六次周期，也就是六個太陰歷的時間，觀測及紀錄月亮的運行有一百多年的時間。
