OECDheadlineinflationedgesupto6.0%inDecember2023
Year-on-yearinflationintheOECD,asmeasuredbytheConsumerPriceIndex(CPI),increasedfrom5.8%inNovemberto6.0%inDecember2023(Figures1and2),afterthreeconsecutivemonthsofdecreases.Increaseswererecordedin14OECDcountries,whileinflationdeclinedin21countriesandwasstableintheremaining3countries.Inflationwasbelow10%inallcountriesexceptTürkiye.Inflationexcludingfoodandenergy(coreinflation)wasbroadlystableintheOECD,at6.7%inDecember,still0.7percentagepoint(p.p.)aboveheadlineinflation.ThedeclineoffoodinflationintheOECDslowedcomparedtorecentmonths,standingat6.7%inDecemberafter7.1%inNovember.Nevertheless,declinesinfoodinflationwererecordedin31OECDcountries.EnergyinflationintheOECDremainednegativefortheeighthconsecutivemonth.
OECDinflationin2023wasabout2.5percentagepointsbelowits2022annualaverage(6.9%comparedwith9.5%),drivenmainlybyenergydeflation(-0.9%annualaveragein2023comparedto29.6%in2022).OECDfoodinflationin2023wasalsobelowits2022levelbutremainedabove10%.Bycontrast,OECDcoreinflationwashigherin2023thanin2022(7.0%in2023and6.7%in2022),reachingitshighestannualaverageratesince1990.
InDecember2023,year-on-yearinflationintheG7wasbroadlystableat3.2%,comparedto3.1%inNovember.ThelargestincreasewasregisteredinGermany,whereinflationroseto3.7%inDecemberfrom3.2%inNovember,reflectingabaseeffectduetoaone-offmeasureongasandheatingbills(knownas"Decemberimmediateassistance")inDecember2022.SmallerincreaseswereobservedinCanada,France,andtheUnitedStates,whileitdeclinedinJapanforthesecondmonthinarow.Non-foodandnon-energyitemswerethemaincontributorstoheadlineinflationinmostG7countriesinDecember(Figure3).
Intheeuroarea,year-on-yearinflationasmeasuredbytheHarmonisedIndexofConsumerPrices(HICP)roseto2.9%inDecemberafterfallingforseveralmonths,mainlyduetotheslowdowninenergydeflation.Foodandcoreinflationbothcontinuedtodecline.InJanuary2024,Eurostat’s
flashestimate
pointedtoaslightdeclineineuroareaheadline(to2.8%)andcoreinflation.
IntheG20,year-on-yearinflationroseto6.5%inDecember(from5.8%inNovember),itshighestlevelsinceApril.InflationdecreasedinSouthAfrica,Indonesia,andSaudiArabia,butcontinuedtosurgeinArgentina.InChina,inflationremainednegativeforthreemonthsinarow.ItwasbroadlystableinBrazilandIndia.
