Buthowmuchmoreareyou,Harvardgraduatesof2022,likelytotouchotherpeople’slives?Yourintelligence,yourcapacityforhardwork,theeducationyouhaveearnedandreceived,giveyouuniquestatus,anduniqueresponsibilities.Evenyournationalitysetsyouapart.Thegreatmajorityofyoubelongtotheworld’sonlyremainingsuperpower.Thewayyouvote,thewayyoulive,thewayyouprotest,thepressureyoubringtobearonyourgovernment,hasanimpactwaybeyondyourborders.Thatisyourprivilege,andyourburden.

Ifyouchoosetouseyourstatusandinfluencetoraiseyourvoiceonbehalfofthosewhohavenovoice;ifyouchoosetoidentifynotonlywiththepowerful,butwiththepowerless;ifyouretaintheabilitytoimagineyourselfintothelivesofthosewhodonothaveyouradvantages,thenitwillnotonlybeyourproudfamilieswhocelebrateyoure*istence,butthousandsandmillionsofpeoplewhoserealityyouhavehelpedchange.Wedonotneedmagictochangetheworld.

Iamnearlyfinished.Ihaveonelasthopeforyou,whichissomethingthatIalreadyhadat21.ThefriendswithwhomIsatongraduationdayhavebeenmyfriendsforlife.Theyaremychildren’sgodparents,thepeopletowhomI’vebeenabletoturnintimesoftrouble,peoplewhohavebeenkindenoughnottosuemewhenItooktheirnamesforDeathEaters.Atourgraduationwewereboundbyenormousaffection,byoursharede*perienceofatimethatcouldnevercomeagain,and,ofcourse,bytheknowledgethatweheldcertainphotographicevidencethatwouldbee*ceptionallyvaluableifanyofusranforPrimeMinister.

Sotoday,Iwishyounothingbetterthansimilarfriendships.Andtomorrow,Ihopethatevenifyouremembernotasinglewordofmine,yourememberthoseofSeneca,anotherofthoseoldRomansImetwhenIfleddowntheClassicscorridor,inretreatfromcareerladders,insearchofancientwisdom:

Faculty,family,friends,andfellowgraduates,goodevening.

Iamhonoredtoaddressyoutonight.OnbehalfofthegraduatingmastersanddoctoralstudentsofWashingtonUniversitysSchoolofEngineeringandAppliedScience,Iwouldliketothankalltheparents,spouses,families,andfriendswhoencouragedandsupportedusasweworkedtowardsourgraduatedegrees.Iwouldespeciallyliketothankmyownfamily,eightmembersofwhichareintheaudiencetoday.Iwouldalsoliketothankallofthedepartmentsecretariesandotherengineeringschoolstaffmemberswhoalwaysseemedtobetherewhenconfusedgraduatestudentsneededhelp.AndfinallyIwouldliketothanktheWashingtonUniversityfacultymemberswhoservedasourinstructors,mentors,andfriends.

AsIthinkbackontheseven-and-a-halfyearsIspentatWashingtonUniversity,mymindisfilledwithmemories,happy,sad,frustrating,andevenhumorous.

TonightIwouldliketosharewithyousomeofthememoriesthatItakewithmeasIleaveWashingtonUniversity.

ItakewithmethememoryofmyofficeonthefourthfloorofLopataHall-theroomattheendofthehallwaythatwastoohotinsummer,toocoldinwinter,andalwaystoofarawayfromthewomensrestroom.Thewindowwasmyofficesbestfeature.Wereitnotforthephysicsbuildingacrosstheway,itwouldhaveaffordedmeaclearviewofthearch.ButinsteadIgotaviewoftheroofofthephysicsbuilding.IalsohadaviewofonecorneroftheroofofUrbauerHall,whichseemedtobeafavoriteperchforvariousspeciesofbirdswhoalternatelywonperchingrightsforseveralweeksatatime.AndIhadaniceviewofthephysicscourtyard,noteworthyasagoodplaceforwatchingpeopleruntheirdogs.ItsamazinghowfascinatingtheseviewsbecamethelongerIworkedonmydissertation.Butmyfavoriteviewwasofanearbyoaktree.Frommyfourth-floorvantagepointIhadaratherintimateviewofthetreeandthevariousbirdsandsquirrelsthatinhabitit.Occasionallyabirdwouldlandonmywindowsill,whichusuallyhadtheeffectofstartlingbothofus.

ItakewithmethememoryoftwoyoungprofessorswhopassedawaywhileIwasagraduatestudent.AnneJohnstone,theonlyfemaleprofessorfromwhomItookacourseintheengineeringschool,andBobDurr,apoliticalscienceprofessorandamemberofmydissertationcommittee,bothlostbravebattleswithcancer.Irememberthemfondly.

Itakewithmethememoryoffailingthefirste*aminoneofthefirstengineeringcoursesItookasanundergraduate.IrememberthinkingthecoursewasjusttoohardformeandthatIwouldneverbeabletopassit.SoIwenttotalktotheprofessor,readytodroptheclass.Andhetoldmenottogiveup,hetoldmeIcouldsucceedinhisclass.Forreasonsthatseemedcompletelyludicrousatthetime,hesaidhehadfaithinme.Andafterthatmygradesintheclassslowlyimproved,andIendedthesemesterwithanAonthefinale*am.Irememberhowmotivationalitwastoknowthatsomeonebelievedinme.

ItakewithmememoriesofthemidwesternfriendlinessthatsosurprisedmewhenIarrivedinSt.Louis8yearsago.SincemovingtoNewJersey,Iamsadtosay,nobodyhasaskedmewhereIwenttohighschool.

Itakewithmethememoryoftheshort-livedcomputersciencegraduatestudentsocialcommitteelunches.TheideawasthatgroupsofCSgradstudentsweresupposedtotaketurnscookingamonthlylunch.ButafteronegradstudentpreparedapotofchickenthatpoisonedalmosttheentireCSgradstudentpopulationandoneunluckyfacultymemberinonefellswoop,therewasntmuchenthusiasmforhavingmorelunches.

Itakewithmethememoryofamoresuccessfulgraduatestudenteffort,theestablishmentoftheAssociationofGraduateEngineeringStudents,knownasAGES.Startedbyahandfulofengineeringgraduatestudentsbecauseweneededawaytoelectrepresentativestoacampus-widegraduatestudentgovernment,AGESsoongrewintoanorganizationthatnowsponsorsawidevarietyofactivitiesandhasbeeninstrumentalinaddressinganumberofengineeringgraduatestudentconcerns.

ItakewithmethememoryofanEngineeringandPolicydepartmentthatoncehadflourishingprogramsforfull-timeundergraduate,masters,anddoctoralstudents.

Itakewithmememoriesofthe1992U.S.Presidentialdebate.Eagertogetinvolvedinallthee*citementIvolunteeredtohelpwhereverneeded.IrememberspendingseveraldaysinthemakeshiftdebateHQgivingout-of-townreportersdirectionstotheathleticcomple*.Irememberbeingthrilledtogetassignedthejobofcollectingfilmfromthephotographersinthedebatehallduringthedebate.AndIrememberthedisappointmentofdrawingtheshorteststrawamongthestudentvolunteersandbeingtheonewhohadtotakethefilmoutofthedebatehallanddowntothedarkroomfiveminutesintothedebate-withnochancetore-enterthedebatehallafterIleft.
