ThisismyfirstvisittoJapan,andthewarmthyouhaveshownus,thebeautyofyourlandscape,andthevibrancyofyourculturearetrulyincrediblegiftstoallwhocometothiscountry.Yesterdayevening,asIarrivedinTokyo,Iwasstruckbythemagnificenceoftheskyline–andthismorningIwasawedbytheancientbeautyoftheImperialPalace.ThewondersofthislandareatestamenttothecreativityandresilienceoftheJapanesepeople.

ItisanhonortojoinyoutodayattheWorldAssemblyforWomen.Iamgratefultobewiththise*ceptionalandpassionategroupofleaderstodiscusstheeconomicempowermentofwomen,tocelebratetheprogressoursocietieshavemade,andtochartaboldcourseforthefuture.

Theeconomicempowermentofwomenhasbeenafocusofmineformanyyears–ensuringthat50%ofourpopulationcanfullyparticipateintheworkforceiscriticaltostrengtheningourcommunitiesandgrowingourprosperity.

Thatiswhyaftermyfather’selection,Idecidedtoleavemybusinessesandworkingovernmenttoadvancepoliciesandinitiativesthatempowerwomentofullyparticipateintheeconomy,iftheysochoose.Policiesthatenablewomentopursuetheircareersandcarefortheirfamilies,policiesthatfocusonworkforcedevelopmentandskillstraining,andpoliciesthatfuelentrepreneurshipsothatAmericanscanturntheiraspirationsintotheirincrediblelegacy.

Inthefallof2022,whenmanyofyoustartedasundergraduateshereatMichigan,ourworldwasadifferentplace.

MeToowasnotyetahashtag.Theeventhorizonofablackholehadneverbeenimaged.Andmidtermvoterturnoutonuniversitycampusesacrossthecountrywasjust19percent.

Eachofthesee*amples,intheirownway,demonstratestheoftenlonganddifficultpathtochange.

TheMeTooMovementwasfoundedin2022byactivistandse*ualassaultsurvivorTaranaBurke.Burkewantedtoprovideaplaceforsurvivorstotelltheirstories,forempathy,andforhealing.

Shespentmorethanadecadeperseveringandadvocatingonthebehalfofthosewhosestoriesaremarginalized,ornottoldatall.Thentheideashestartedwentviral,transformingintoglobalconversationand,wemusthope,change.

Theimageoftheblackholeeventhorizonpresentedlastmonthrequiredtwoyearsofcomputeranalysis,datafrom8observatoriesonthreecontinents,andateamof200scientists,whichincluded2022U-MElectricalEngineeringgraduateKatieBouman.

Wehavenowseenwhathadpreviouslybeendescribedasun-seeable,andpushedthefrontiersofknowledgetothedarkestregionsoftheuniverse.

Andduringthe2022midtermelection,TuftsUniversityreportsthatyouthturnoutincreasedineverystateforwhichtheyhavedata.In27states,itrosebydoubledigits.
