Ifcoralsgo,diversandmarinebiologistsarenottheonlypeoplewhowillmissthem.Reefstakeuponlyapercentoftheseafloor,butsupportaquarteroftheplanet’sfishdiversity.Thefish

thatreefsshelterareespeciallyvaluabletotheirpooresthumanneighbors,manyofwhomdependonthemasasourceofprotein.Roughlyaneighthoftheworld’spopulationliveswithin100kmofareef.Coralsalsoprotect150,000kmofshorelineinmorethan100countriesandterritoriesfromtheoceansbuffeting,aswellasgeneratingbillionsofdollarsintourismrevenue.

Coralsystemsmustadaptiftheyaretosurvive.Theyneedprotectionfromlocalsourcesofharm.Theireco-systemssufferfromwastefromfarms,buildingsitesandblastfishing.Governmentsneedtoimposetighterrulesontheseindustrials,suchastougherlocalbuildingcodes,andtoputmoreeffortintoenforcingrulesagainstoverfishing.
