WhenYou’reJustNotFeelingMotivated6thingsyoucantrytoovereyourresistanceKEYPOINTSYourpathtomotivationisunique,andyouwillhavetofindtheapproachthatworksbestforyou.Itcanhelptoexploreyourownfeelings,playaroundwithselfjudgment,andmoveyourbody.Anylittlestep—especiallywhenyou’renot“feelingit”—canmoveyouintherightdirection.Somedays,youarejustnotfeelingit.Youdon’twanttogetoutofbed.Youdon’twanttomakethatdifficultcall,engagewithyourboringcoworker,ordothatsillylittleexercisefromyourtherapist.Youdon’twanttodoanyofthosethings–andyetyourobligationsleavelittlewiggleroom.Whetheryouwanttoornot,youwillhavetoshowup.Andwheneveryou’re“notfeelingit”,ithelpstohavesomestrategiesthatcangiveyouapushintherightdirection.Withoutfurtherado,herearesixthingsyoucantrytogiveyourmotivationaboost.Tip1:GetCuriousAboutYourFeelingWerarelyevertakethetimetoinvestigateourfeelings,solet’sdothatrightnow:Whereinyourbodydoyounoticethelackofmotivation?Andhowcanyoutell?Takeamomenttoreallyfeelyourfeeling,untilyoucanroughlylocalizeitinyourbody.Doesitchange?Ordoesitremainthesame?Don’ttrytoforceittochange,andinsteadjustletitbethere.Watchitforawhile.Ifyou’regettingbored,seeifyoucanexpandthisfeelingof“notwantingto”(yes,really),andleanintoit.Noticewhatchanges.Counterintuitiveasitmaysound,thishasactuallybeenshowntobeaneffectivestrategyfordealingwithunwantedemotions;helpingyoutobeemoreawareofyourownexperience,andteachingyoutobewithit.Tip2:PlayAroundWithSelfJudgmentChancesare,youdon’tjustmerelyprocrastinate,butalsojudgeyourselffordoingso.Youmayevenhavesomeinsultsreadywheneveryoudon’tjumpintoactionquickenough:“l(fā)azypieceofwork,”“youcannevergetanythingdone,”or“worthless.”Thesethoughtscanfeelquiteheavy,solet’slightenthemup.Youcoulddistillthemintoasingletwosyllableword(like“l(fā)azy”),andrepeatitasfastasyoucanfor30seconds(e.g.“l(fā)azy,lazy,lazy,lazy…).YoucouldimaginehearingthethoughtnarratedbyDavidAttenborough,asifhewasmakingadocumentaryaboutyourlife.Oryoucouldsingittothetuneof“BornintheU.S.A.”byBruceSpringsteen.Playaroundwiththesemethodsforalittlewhile,andseewhichoneworksbestforyou.Thisisnottoridiculeyourthoughts,buttotakeouttheirpunch.Tip3:GetUpAndShakeYourBodyGetuprightnow,andshakeyourbody.Seriously,doit.Youmayevenwanttojumparoundalittlebit,dosomesquats,somepushupsifyoudare,andreallygetthatbloodflowing.Whenyousitatyourdeskfortoolong,youbeestiff:notjustinyourposture,butalsoinyourbreathing,andinyourthinking,andeveninyourfeeling.Aquickandeasywaytoremedythisrigidityisbygettingbackinyourbody.Youmayevenwanttotakeaquickwalkaroundtheneighborhood,withaddedbonuspointsifyouspendtimeinnature.Tip4:FindYourPersonalSweetSpotSomepeoplethriveunderpressure,whileothersneedlooseguidelines.Somepeoplerequireafreshlybrewedmorningcoffee(guilty),whileotherscanonlybeproductivelateatnight.Thepointis,thereisnooneformulaforgettingyouintoaction,becauseitalwaysdependsonyou–yourindividualneedsandpersonalpreferences.Ifyoucurrentlyfindyourselfstuck,thinkbacktoatimewhenyoulastfeltmotivated.Thenaskyourself:Whatwasdifferentbackthen?Andhowcanyourecreatethiscontext–bothouterandinner–tomoveyoutoaction?Tip5:“WhyEvenBother?”Whydoyouevenbotherinthefirstplace?Noreally,whydoyoucare?Youmayfindthatunderneatheveryunwantedtask,there’ssomethingthatmatterstoyou.Itmaybeaboutyourfinancialsecurity,orabouttheconnectionwithothers.Itmaybeaboutyourhealth,aboutlivinguptoyourpotential,orjustabouthavingaclearconscience.Whateveritis,it’sworthpausingandconsideringwhatyoucareabout–andhowyourtaskisintheserviceofit.Thismaymeanlookingatthevaluesyouwanttoliveby,oritmaymeanlookingatyourgoals(andifyoudon’thaveany,considerthisasanopportunitytocreatesomenewones).Tip6:DoSomethingRightNowMotivationrarelyworkslikepeoplethinkitdoes.Wedon’tsuddenlyfeelmotivatedtodocertainthingsandthenjumpintoaction.Instead,it’smorelikelytoworktheotherwayaround:Wegetstarteddoingsomething,andthenwefeelmotivatedtocontinuedoingthatexactthing.Motivationtoexerciseisoftentheresultofafewprevioussessionsofexercising.Motivationtoworkonaprojectoftenesafterhavingsomemomentumonthisexactproject.Thismeanstwothings:first,don’twaitformotivationbeforeyougetstarted.Andsecond,justgetstarted.Dosomething.Anythingthatwillgettheballrolling.Youwillfiguretherestoutasyougoalong,butactioncanneverbereplacedbyanyamountofthinking.Remember,thisisajourneyofcontinuousexperimentation.Yourpathtomotivationisunique,andyouwillhavetofindtheapproachthatworksbestforyou.Thismeansgettingtoknowyoupersonally–youruniqueneedsandpreferences–andlookingatwhathasworkedforyoubefore.Meanwhileitisalsohelpfultoexploreyourownfeelings,playar
