HowtoMakeSureYourDayStartsOffGreatNewresearchshowsthatgettingmotivatedcanbeaseasyas123.KEYPOINTSTherearedayswhennothingseemstomotivateyou,andyouviewupingtasksasstiflingandroutine.Newresearchoninnovativebehaviorshowshowtoturndreadintopositiveanticipationofdailyplans.The321approachthatbuildsonyourstrengthscanhelpfulfillingdaysturnintofulfillinglives.You’vegotabigdayaheadofyou,andnormallyyou’dbeallfiredupandreadytogetgoing.However,youdidn’tsleepquiteaswellasyouwouldhaveliked,andsomethingjustseems“off.”You’vespilledyourcoffee,it’srainingheavily,andyouknowthatatsomepoint,you’llhavenochoicebuttogetoutthedoor.Whenpeoplefeelasthoughthey’vegotnoenergy,orthatthere’sjusttoomuchtodealwith,itcanbeemotionallydraining.Ontheotherhand,wheneverythingislinedupjustright,there’snostoppingyou.How,then,canyouconvertwhatseemslikeitmightbeabaddayintoonethatallowsyoutosoar?UseYourStrengthstoGetYourBestDayAccordingtoSouthwestJiaotongUniversity’sTaoLiuandcolleagues(2023),yourbestdaysaretheonesinwhichyoucanfullyengageyourstrengths,butthere’saprovisoinvolved:Havingthestrengthtogothroughyourdayisdefinitelybeneficial,buttheLiuetalteamproposedthatrelyingonstrengthsalonecouldbeeaproblem.Thesocalled“strengthbased”approachinresearchonworkplaceperformancesuggeststhatdiggingintothosereservesmayparadoxicallykeeppeoplestuckinarutratherthanbewillingtoexploremorecreativeoptions.Youknowwhatworks,soyoufailtoengageyourimaginationinwaysthatcouldhelpyoulookatproblemsinanewlight.Engagingyourstrengthtoitsmaxwithoutanyreliefcanpotentiallyloweryourcreativity;itcanalsobedraining.Perhapsoneofthereasonsyou’renotlookingforwardtoyourdayisthatyouknowthatbyitsend,you’llbeexhausted.Fatiguedbeforeyouevenbegin,youdreadsappingallofyourstrengthbypouringitintoyourwork.Maybeyou’dbemoreexcitedifyouthoughttherewouldbeatleastsomevariationinwhat’stoe.Thereisawayoutofthisdilemma.CitingthetheoryofthelateMihalyCsikszentmihalyi,theChineseresearchersproposethatifyoucandirectyourstrengthstotheactivitiesthatengageyoubothemotionallyandintellectually,yourcreativityneednotsuffer.Inthisstate,called“flow,”peoplebeealmostunawareoftheirsurroundingsastheybeeincreasinglydrawnintotheirwork.Youmayhaveexperiencedthisstateyourselfthelasttimeyouthrewyourselfintoahomeprojectthat,beforeyourealizedit,tookyourentireday.Ratherthanbeingexhausted,youfeltelated.Yetanothermitigatingfactorthatcanpreventyoufrombeingstale,Liuetalpropose,isgratitude.Themoreyouappreciatethepeopleyouworkfor,themorelikelyitisthatyou’llfindvalueinwhatyoudoonadailybasis.Gratitudetowardtheorganization(GTO),theauthorssuggest,helpsyouentermorereadilyintothestateofflow.Youmightnotfeelthiswayeveryday,butonthosedayswhenyoudo,it’smuchmorelikelythatyou’llbeabletoavoidfeelingthateverythingisjustthesameoldsameold.TestingThisNewModelofInnovationTotesttheirmodelpredictinginnovationfromabinationofGTO,useofstrengths,andflow,LiuandtheresearchteamrecruitedworkersfromatopChineseengineeringconstructionpanywhosefocusisondevelopinginnovative,sustainable,products.Theresearchteamreportsthattheemployeesinthispanyareencouragedtothinkascreativelyaspossible.It’salsoapanythatseeksinputfromemployeestofindwaystocreateideasthatarebothinnovativeandsustainable.Usingadailydiarydesigncoveringa3weekperiod(15workingdays),theChineseresearchteamwasabletotrackdailyvariationsinGTOasaninfluenceondailyvariationsinstrengthsuse,flow,innovativebehavior,and,ultimately,jobsatisfaction.Theirsampleof204employees(averageage28yearsold)pleted4assessmentsperday:Dailystrengthsuse(e.g.“Today,Ihaveconductedtasksthathavesuitedmystrengthswell,”);dailyinnovativebehavior(“Today,Isearchedoutnewworkingmethods,techniques,andinstrumentsatwork”);dailyflow(“Today,whenIengagedinmywork,Ifeltoptimalenjoyment”);anddailyGTO(“Today,Iamgratefultomyorganizationformanyreasons”).Astheauthorspredicted,onthedayswhenworkersreportedthattheyexperiencedflowaswellasGTO,theyweremorelikelytosaythattheyappliedtheirstrengthstoengagingininnovativebehavior.Theywerealsomoresatisfiedwiththeirjobonthosedays.Supportingwhatotherpsychologistshavecalledthe“broadenandbuild”theory,thefindingssuggestthatbeingimmersedinwhatyou’redoinggeneratesevenmorepositiveapproachestowork,resultinginagreaterwillingnesstoexperimentwithnewideas.Becausethepanytheyworkedforvaluedratherthandiscouragedinnovation,it’slikelythatanoverallsenseofgratitudeforallowingthisfreedomofthoughtprovidedthatimportantextrapush.A123WaytoEnergizeYourDayTheworkersinthisstudylookedbackontheirday,butwhatifyouflippedthequestionsaroundtothinkaboutthedaythat’sabouttoe?Beingabletoinnovateshould,basedonthesefindings,helpmobilizeandmotivateyou.Togetthere,thethreeelementsofstrengthsuseplusflowplusgratitudecouldbeethoseenergizingfactors:1.Imagineyourselfbeingascreativeaspossible.Putyourselfintotheframeofmindoflookingatwhatyouhopetoacplishandthenseeifthereisawaytochangeitupalittlebitfromtheroutinedaytodaygrind.2.Putyourselfintoastatethatcangenerateflow.Viewingyourdailyactivities,seethemasawaytobeeengrossedratherthanbored.eupwithinspiringphrasesthatseemtoworkforyou.3.Thinkaspos
