andAssessmentsReviewlessonsareveryimportantandoftenawonderfulopportunitytoconsolidateeverythingyourstudentshavelearned.Butlet’sfaceit.Theyareusuallyveryboring.Soboringinfact,thatwedon’tenjoythem,andstudentsoftenfeeltheyarenotreallydoinganythingproductive.Usinggamesinreviewclassescanbedefinedasanorganizedactivitythatusuallyhasthefollowingproperties:A.aparticulartaskorobjective;B.asetofrules;C.competitionbetweenplayers;D.communicationbetweenplayersbyspokenorwrittenlanguage.Themainfocusofusinggamesinclassistohelpstudentslearnandhavefun.GAMES!WhyUseGamesinClassTime?1>Gamesarefunandchildrenliketoplaythem.Throughgameschildrenexperience,discover,andinteractwiththeirenvironment.2>Throughplayinggames,studentscanlearnEnglishthewaychildrenlearntheirmothertonguewithoutbeingawaretheyarestudying;thuswithoutstress,theycanlearnalot.3>Formanychildrenbetweenthreeandtwelveyearsold,especiallytheyoungest,languagelearningwillnotbethekeymotivationalfactor.Gamescanprovidethisstimulus.4>Evenshystudentscanparticipatepositively.5>Establishthespiritofteamwork.HowtoChooseGames1>Agamemustbemorethanjustfun.2>Agameshouldinvolve“friendly”competition.3>Agameshouldkeepallofthestudentsinvolvedandinterested.4>Agameshouldencouragestudentstofocusontheuseoflanguageratherthanonthelanguageitself.5>Agameshouldgivestudentsachancetolearn,practice,orreviewspecificlanguagematerial.GAMESNothingeasesthetensionfromanupcomingtestbetterthanafewrelaxinggames.Butmakesurethatyouplaygamesthatwillhelpstudentsreviewthelessonsyouwantthemtopractice.ReviewGamesthatUseTimeEffectivelyJustgivepoints:Dividetheclassintotwo(ormore)teamsandstartaskingquestions.Callonthefirsthandraised,andifshe/he’sright,givehisteamapoint.Ifshe/he’swrong,theotherteamsgetachancetoanswer.Keepatallyontheboard,andtheteamwiththemostpointsattheendwins.
