WhendescribingtheeventsheincludesintheAutobiography,he'sdirectaboutwhathappenstohimandhowhefeelsaboutit.Ifwewerelivingin1786,we'dprobablyunderstandhimperfectly.Franklin'scommittedtoinvolvingreadersinhistext,almostlikehe'stalkingdirectlytous.Forexample,heopenshisautobiographybysaying:
