Ibowedmyhead;yes,shewasright.BythenIwasenteringGradeSix,facedwiththebiggestchallengeyettocome—theexaminationtoentermydreamjuniorhighschool.Forthat,Ihadgivenupmybelovedpianolesson,myfavoritecartoonprogramandeventheplayfulweekendfamilyreunionwithmycousins.Iwouldn’tbesurprisedatallifmyvery-strict-university-teachermothergotfuriousatmewhenIchosetodoanythingbesidesstudyatthatcrucialmoment.

WhenIfirststudiedRobertFrost’s“TheRoadNotTaken”inmiddleschool,Iwasunabletograspitsambiguity.IalwaysthoughtthatFrost’spersonachooses“aroadlesstraveledby”andliveslifebeingsubversiveandirreverent.Iwaswrong.Inthepoem,bothofthetworoadsthat“divergedinayellowwood”areactually“aboutthesame.”Buttherehastobeachoice,andsometimes,theyitcanbeinvoluntary(asIlearnedthehardway).ThismakesmeextremelythankfulandresolutewhenIcanmakeconsciouschoicesandplanforthefuture,andsoIknownowthatFrostspoemisalsoabouttheroadnot[yet]taken.
