Warm-Up(5minutes)

Beginthelessonbyaskingstudentsaboutspecialdaystheyknowandcelebratewiththeirfamilies.Writetheirresponsesontheboardandaskfollow-upquestionstoelicitmoreinformation.Forexample:

WhatspecialdaydowehaveinChinathatinvolveseatingdumplings?

Whodoyougivepresentstoonyourbirthday?

WhatkindofcostumedoyouwearonHalloween?

PresentationandPractice(20minutes)

Introducenewvocabularyrelatedtospecialdaysthroughslidesorhandoutswithimages.Provideboththewordandapicturetohelpstudentsunderstandandrememberthevocabulary.Examplesofvocabularytointroduceinclude:

Valentine’sDay

Christmas

Easter

ChineseNewYear

Halloween

Afterintroducingthenewvocabulary,havestudentspracticeaskingandansweringquestionsusingit.Modelthequestionsandencouragestudentstorepeatthembeforepairingthemuptopracticewitheachother.

ListeningandSpeaking(20minutes)

Playanaudiorecordingofadialoguebetweentwopeoplediscussingspecialdays.Havestudentslistentotherecordingandmakenotesaboutthespecialdaysmentionedandwhatthepeopledoonthosedays.Aftertherecordingisfinished,reviewthevocabularyfromtherecordingasaclassandaskstudentsquestionstocheckcomprehension.

Forexample:-Whatspecialdaywasmentionedintherecording?-Whatdidthepeopledoonthatday?

Afterreviewingthevocabulary,havestudentspracticehavingasimilardialoguewithapartner.Providescaffoldingbygivingthemsentencestartersorpromptstouse.Forexample:

PersonB:Yes,wedo.Weusually…

GroupWork(15minutes)

Dividetheclassintosmallgroupsandassigneachgroupaspecialdaytoresearchandpresenttotheclass.Provideresearchmaterialssuchasbooksorwebsites,andencouragestudentstousethenewvocabularytheyhavelearned.Eachgroupshouldprepareashortpresentationoftheirspecialday,includingwhatpeopledoonthatdayandanyspecialtraditionsorcustomsassociatedwithit.

Reviewthenewvocabularyandaskstudentstoshareanynewinformationtheylearnedaboutspecialdaysduringthelesson.Encouragethemtoasktheirfamiliesaboutanyspecialdaystheycelebrateandsharewiththeclassduringthenextlesson.
