BIn1885,aVirginiaboynamedClarenceSaundersbeganworkingpart-timeasaclerkinagrocerystorewhenhewas14yearsold,andquitschoolwhentheshopkeeperofferedhimMltimeworkwithroomandboard.LaterheworkedinanAlabamacokeplantandinaTennesseesawmillbeforehereturnedtothegrocerybusiness.By1900,whenhewasnineteenyearsold,hewasearning$30amonthasasalesmanforawholesalegrocer.Duringhisyearsworkinginthegrocerystores,hefoundthatitwasveryinconvenientandinefficientforpeopletobuythingsbecausemorethanacenturyago,longbeforetherewerecomputers,shoppingwasdonequitedifferentlythanitistoday.Enteringastore,thecustomerwouldapproachthecounter(orwaitforaclerktobecomeavailable)andplaceanorder,eitherverballyor,aswasoftenthecaseforboysrunningerrands,intheformofanoteorlist.Whilethecustomerwaited,theclerkwouldmovebehindthecounterandthroughoutthestore,selecttheitems

onthelist—someformshelvessohighthatlong-handledgraspingdevice

hadtobeused—andbringthembacktothecountertobetalliedandbaggedorboxed.Theprocessmightbeexpeditedbythecustomercallingorsending

intheorderbeforehand,orbytheorderbeinghandledbyadeliveryboyonabike,butotherwiseitdidnotvarygreatly.Saunders,aflamboyantandinnovativeman,noticedthatthismethodresultedinwastedtimeandexpense,sohecameupwithanunheard-ofsolutionthatwouldrevolutionizetheentiregroceryindustry:hedevelopedawayforshopperstoservethemselves.

CSoin1902hemovedtoMemphiswherehedevelopedhisconcepttoformagrocerywholesalecooperativeandafull-servicegrocerystore.Forhisnew“cafeteriagrocery”,Saundersdividedhisgroceryintothreedistinctareas:

1)Afront“l(fā)obby”forminganentranceandexitandcheckoutsatthefront.

2)Asalesdepartment,whichwasspeciallydesignedtoallowcustomerstoroamtheaislesandselecttheirowngroceries.Removingunnecessaryclerks,creatingelaborateaisledisplays,andrearrangingthestoretoforcecustomerstoviewallofthemerchandiseandovertheshelvingandcabinetsunitsofsalesdepartmentwere“galleries”wheresupervisorswereallowedtokeepaneyeonthecustomerswhilenotdisturbingthem.3)Andanothersectionofhisstoreistheroomonlyallowedfortheclerkswhichwascalledthe“stockroom”or“storageroom”wherelargerefrigeratorsweresituatedtokeepfreshproductsfrombeingperishable.Thenewformatallowedmultiplecustomerstoshopatthesametime,andledtothepreviouslyunknownphenomenonofimpulseshopping.Thoughthisformatofgrocerymarketwasdrasticallydifferentfromitscompetitors,thestylebecamethestandardforthemoderngrocerystoreandlatersupermarket.

DOnSeptember6,1916,Saunderslaunchedtheself-servicerevolutionintheUSAbyopeningthefirstself-servicePigglyWigglystore,at79JeffersonStreetinMemphis,Tennessee,withitscharacteristicturnstileattheentrance.Customerspaidcashandselectedtheirowngoodsfromtheshelves.Itwasunlikeanyothergrocerystoreofthattime.InsideaPigglyWiggly,shopperswerenotatthemercyofshopclerks.Theywerefreetoroamthestore,checkoutthemerchandiseandgetwhattheyneededwiththeirowntwohandsandfeet.PricesonitemsatPigglyWigglywereclearlymarked.Noonepressuredcustomerstobuymilkorpickles.AndthebiggestbenefitatthePigglyWigglywasthatshopperssavedmoney.Self-servicewasapositiveallaround.“It’sgoodforboththeconsumerandretailerbecauseitcutscosts,”notedGeorgeT.Haley,aprofessorattheUniversityofNewHavenanddirectoroftheCenterforInternationalIndustryCompetitiveness.“IfyoulookedatthewaygrocerystoreswererunprevioustoPigglyWigglyandAlphaBeta,whatyoufindisthattherewasatremendousamountoflaborinvolved,andlaborisamajorexpense.”PigglyWigglycutthefat.

EPigglyWigglyandtheself-serviceconcepttookoff.SaundersopenedninestoresintheMemphisareawithinthefirstyearofbusiness.Consumersembracedtheefficiency,thesimplicityandmostofallthelowerfoodprices.Saunderssoonpatentedhisself-serviceconcept,andbeganfranchisingPigglyWigglystores.Thankstothebenefitsofself-serviceandfranchising,PigglyWigglyballoonedtonearly1,300storesby1923.PigglyWigglysold$100million—worth$1.3billiontoday—ingroceries,makingitthethird-biggestgroceryretailerinthenation.Thecompany’sstockwasevenlistedontheNewYorkStockExchange,doublingfromlate1922toMarch1923.SaundershadhishandsalloverPigglyWiggly.Hewasinstrumentalinthedesignandlayoutofhisstores.Heeveninventedtheturnstile.

FHoweverSaunderswasforcedintobankruptcyin1923afteradramaticspatwiththeNewYorkStockExchangeandhewentontocreatethe“ClarenceSaunderssole-owner-of-my-name”chain,whichwentintobankruptcy.
