AudreyHepburn(4May1929-20January1993)wasanAcademyAwardandTonyAwardwinningAnglo-Dutchactressoffilmandtheatre,Broadwaystageperformer,ballerina,fashionmodel,andhumanitarian.

Biography

RaisedunderNaziruleinArnhem(TheNetherlands)duringWorldWarII,Hepburntrainedextensivelytobecomeaballerinabeforedecidingtopursueacting.ShefirstgainednoticeforherstarringroleintheBroadwayproductionofGigi(1951).ShewasthencastinRomanHoliday(1953)asPrincessAnn,theroleforwhichshewonanAcademyAward.ShewasoneoftheleadingHollywoodactressesduringthe1950sand1960sandreceivedfourmoreAcademyAwardnominationsincludingoneforhericonicperformanceasHollyGolightlyinBreakfastatTiffany's(1961).In1964sheplayedElizaDoolittleinMyFairLady,thecriticallyacclaimedfilmadaptationofthemusical.

From1988untilherdeathin1993sheservedasaUNICEFGoodwillAmbassadorandwashonouredwiththePresidentialMedalofFreedomforherwork.In1999shewasrankedasthethirdgreatestfemalestarofalltimebytheAmericanFilmInstitute.

Earlylife

BornAudreyKathleenRustononRueKeyenveld/KeienveldstraatinIxelles/Elsene,amunicipalityinBrusselsBelgium,shewastheonlychildoftheEnglishmanJosephVictorAnthonyRustonandhissecondwife,theformerBaronessEllavanHeemstra,aDutcharistocratwhowasadaughterofaformergovernorofDutchGuiana.Thefutureactress'sfatherlaterappendedthesurnameofhismaternalgrandmotherKathleenHepburntothefamily's;andhersurnamebecameHepburn-Ruston.Shehadtwohalf-brothers,JonkheerArnoudRobertAlexander'Alex'QuarlesvanUffordandJonkheerIanEdgarBruceQuarlesvanUfford,byhermother'sfirstmarriagetoaDutchnobleman,JonkheerHendrikGustaafAdolfQuarlesvanUfford.ShewasadescendantofKingEdwardIIIofEnglandandScottishconsortJamesHepburn,4thEarlofBothwell,fromwhomKatharineHepburnmayhavealsodescended.

Hepburn'sfather'sjobwithaBritishinsurancecompanymeantthefamilytravelledoftenbetweenBrussels,England,andTheNetherlands.From1935to1938HepburnattendedaprivateacademyforgirlsinKent.In1935herparentsdivorcedandherfather,aNazisympathizer,leftthefamily.(BothparentsweremembersoftheBritishUnionofFascistsinthemid1930saccordingtoUnityMitford,afriendofEllavanHeemstraandafollowerofAdolfHitler.)Shelatercalledthisthemosttraumaticmomentofherlife.YearslatershelocatedhiminDublinthroughtheRedCross.Shestayedincontactwithhimandsupportedhimfinanciallyuntilhisdeath.In1939hermothermovedherandhertwohalf-brotherstotheirgrandfather'shomeinArnhemintheNetherlands.EllabelievedtheNetherlandswouldbesafefromGermanattack.HepburnattendedtheArnhemConservatoryfrom1939to1945whereshetrainedinballetalongwiththestandardschoolcurriculum.

In1940theGermansinvadedHolland.DuringthewarHepburnadoptedthepseudonymEddavanHeemstra,modifyinghermother'sdocumentsbecausean'Englishsounding'namewasconsidereddangerous.Thiswasneverherlegalname.ThenameEddawasaversionofhermother'snameElla.

By1944Hepburnhadbecomeaproficientballerina.ShesecretlydancedforgroupsofpeopletocollectmoneyfortheDutchresistance.Shelatersaid'thebestaudienceIeverhadmadenotasinglesoundattheendofmyperformance'.

AfterthelandingoftheAlliedForcesonD-DaythingsgrewworseundertheGermanoccupiers.DuringtheDutchfamineoverthewinterof1944theGermansconfiscatedtheDutchpeople'slimitedfoodandfuelsupplyforthemselves.Withoutheatintheirhomesorfoodtoeat,peoplestarvedandfrozetodeathinthestreets.Hepburnandmanyothersresortedtomakingflouroutoftulipbulbstobakecakesandbiscuits.ArnhemwasdevastatedduringalliedbombingraidsthatwerepartofOperationMarketGarden.Hepburn'suncleandacousinofhermother'swereshotinfrontofHepburnforbeingpartoftheResistance.Hepburn'shalf-brotherIanvanUffordspenttimeinaGermanlabourcamp.Sufferingfrommalnutrition,Hepburndevelopedacuteanemia,respiratoryproblems,andoedema.

In1991Hepburnsaid'Ihavememories.MorethanonceIwasatthestationseeingtrainloadsofJewsbeingtransported,seeingallthesefacesoverthetopofthewagon.Iremember,verysharply,onelittleboystandingwithhisparentsontheplatform,verypale,veryblond,wearingacoatthatwasmuchtoobigforhim,andhesteppedontothetrain.Iwasachildobservingachild.'

HepburnalsonotedthesimilaritiesbetweenherselfandAnneFrank.'IwasexactlythesameageasAnneFrank.Wewereboth10whenwarbrokeoutand15whenthewarfinished.IwasgiventhebookinDutch,ingalleyform,in1946byafriend.Ireadit—anditdestroyedme.ItdoesthistomanypeoplewhentheyfirstreaditbutIwasnotreadingitasabook,asprintedpages.Thiswasmylife.Ididn'tknowwhatIwasgoingtoread.I'veneverbeenthesameagain,itaffectedmesodeeply.'

'Wesawreprisals.Wesawyoungmenputagainstthewallandshotandthey'dclosethestreetandthenopenitandyoucouldpassbyagain.Ifyoureadthediary,I'vemarkedoneplacewhereshesays'fivehostagesshottoday'.Thatwasthedaymyunclewasshot.Andinthischild'swordsIwasreadingaboutwhatwasinsidemeandisstillthere.Itwasacatharsisforme.ThischildwhowaslockedupinfourwallshadwrittenafullreportofeverythingI'dexperiencedandfelt.'

Thesetimeswerenotallbadandshewasabletoenjoysomeofherchildhood.AgaindrawingparallelstoAnneFrank'slifeHepburnsaid'ThisspiritofsurvivalissostronginAnneFrank'swords.Oneminuteshesays'I'msodepressed'.Thenextsheislongingtorideabicycle.Sheiscertainlyasymbolofthechildinverydifficultcircumstances,whichiswhatIdevoteallmytimeto.Shetranscendsherdeath.'

OnewayinwhichAudreyHepburnpassedthetimewasbydrawing.Someofherchildhoodartworkcanbeseentoday.

WhenthecountrywasliberatedbyalliedforcesUnitedNationsReliefandRehabilitationAdministrationtrucksfollowed.Hepburnsaidinaninterviewsheateanentirecanofcondensedmilkandthengotsickfromoneofherfirstreliefmealsbecausesheputtoomuchsugarinheroatmeal.ThisexperienceiswhatledhertobecomeinvolvedinUNICEFlateinlife.

Earlycareer

In1945afterthewarHepburnlefttheArnhemConservatoryandmovedtoAmsterdamwhereshetookballetlessonswithSoniaGaskell.In1948HepburnwenttoLondonandtookdancinglessonswiththerenownedMarieRambert.HepburneventuallyaskedRambertaboutherfuture.Rambertassuredherthatshecouldcontinuetoworkthereandhaveagreatcareer,butthefactshewasrelativelytall(1.67m,or5'7")coupledwithherpoornutritionduringthewarwouldkeepherfrombecomingaprimaballerina.HepburntrustedRambert'sassessmentanddecidedtopursueacting,acareerinwhichsheatleasthadachancetoexcel.AfterHepburnbecameastar,Rambertsaidinaninterview'shewasawonderfullearner.Ifshehadwantedtopersevere,shemighthavebecomeanoutstandingballerina'.UnfortunatelyHepburn'smotherwasworkingmenialjobstosupportthem.Hepburnhadnomoneyandneededtofindapayingjob.Sinceshehadtrainedallherlifetobeaperformer,actingseemedasensiblecareer.Shesaid'Ineededthemoney;itpaid?3morethanballetjobs'.

HeractingcareerstartedwiththeeducationalfilmDutchinSevenLessons.ShethenplayedinmusicaltheatreinproductionssuchasHighButtonShoesandSaucePiquante.Hepburn'sfirstroleinamotionpicturewasintheBritishfilmOneWildOatinwhichsheplayedahotelreceptionist.SheplayedseveralmoreminorrolesinYoungWives'Tale,LaughterinParadise,TheLavenderHillMob,andMonteCarloBaby.DuringthefilmingofMonteCarloBabyHepburnwaschosentoplaytheleadcharacterintheBroadwayplayGigithatopenedon24November1951attheFultonTheatreandranfor219performances.ThewriterSidonie-GabrielleColetteuponfirstseeingHepburnreportedlysaid'voilà!There'sourGigi!'ShewonaTheatreWorldAwardforherdebutperformanceandithadasuccessfulsixmonthrun.

FromHepburn'sRomanHolidayscreentestwhichwasalsousedinthepromotionaltrailerforthefilm.

Herfirstsignificantfilmperformancewasinthe1952filmSecretPeople,inwhichsheplayedaprodigyballerina.Naturally,Hepburndidallofherowndancingscenes.Hepburn'sfirststarringroleandfirstAmericanfilmwasoppositeGregoryPeckintheHollywoodmotionpictureRomanHoliday.ProducersinitiallywantedElizabethTaylorfortherole,butdirectorWilliamWylerwassoimpressedbyHepburn'sscreentest(thecamerawasleftonandcandidfootageofHepburnrelaxingandansweringquestions,unawarethatshewasstillbeingfilmed,displayedhertalents),thathecastherinthelead.Wylersaid,"ShehadeverythingIwaslookingfor:charm,innocenceandtalent.Shealsowasveryfunny.Shewasabsolutelyenchanting,andwesaid,'That'sthegirl!'"

ThemoviewastohavehadGregoryPeck'snameabovethetitleinlargefontwith"introducingAudreyHepburn"beneath.Afterfilminghadbeencompleted,Peckcalledhisagentand,predictingcorrectlythatHepburnwouldwintheOscarforBestActress,hadthebillingchangedsothathernamealsoappearedbeforehetitleintypeaslargeashis.HepburnandPeckbondedduringfilming,andtherewererumorsthattheywereromanticallyinvolved;bothdeniedit.Hepburn,however,added,"actually,youhavetobealittlebitinlovewithyourleadingmanandviceversa.Ifyou'regoingtoportraylove,youhavetofeelit.Youcan'tdoitanyotherway.Butyoudon'tcarryitbeyondtheset."BecauseoftheinstantcelebritythatcamewithRomanHoliday,Hepburn'sillustrationwasplacedonthecoverofTIME,September71953.

Hepburn'sperformancereceivedmuchcriticalpraise."Althoughsheisnotpreciselyanewcomertofilms,AudreyHepburn,theBritishactresswhoisbeingstarredforthefirsttimeasPrincessAnn,isaslender,elfin,andwistfulbeauty,alternatelyregalandchildlikeinherprofoundappreciationofnewly-found,simplepleasuresandlove.Althoughshebravelysmilesheracknowledgmentoftheendofthataffair,sheremainsapitifullylonelyfigurefacingastuffyfuture."-.Weiler,NewYorkTimes,August28,1953HepburnwouldlatercallRomanHolidayherdearestmovie,becauseitwastheonethatmadeherastar.

AfterfilmingRomanHolidayforfourmonths,HepburnwentbacktoNewYorkanddideightmonthsofGigi.TheplaywasperformedinLosAngelesandSanFranciscoinitslastmonth.Shewasgivenaseven-picturecontractwithParamountwithtwelvemonthsinbetweenfilmstoallowhertimeforstagework..

Hollywoodstardom

HepburninWarandPeace(1956)

AfterRomanHoliday,shefilmedBillyWilder'sSabrinawithHumphreyBogartandWilliamHolden.HepburnwassenttofashiondesignerHubertdeGivenchytodecideonherwardrobe.Whentoldthat"MissHepburn"wascomingtoseehim,GivenchyfamouslyexpectedtoseeKatharine.HewasnotdisappointedwithAudrey,however,andtheyformedalifelongfriendshipandpartnership.DuringthefilmingofSabrina,HepburnandHoldenbecameromanticallyinvolvedandshehopedtomarryhimandhavechildren.ShebrokeofftherelationshipwhenHoldenrevealedthathehadhadavasectomy.

In1954,AudreywentbacktothestagetoplaythewaterspriteinOndineinaperformancewithMelFerrer,whomshewouldwedlaterthatyear.Duringtherunoftheplay,HepburnwasawardedtheGoldenGlobefor"BestMotionPictureActress"andtheAcademyAward,bothforRomanHoliday.SixweeksafterreceivingtheOscar,HepburnwasawardedtheTonyAwardforBestActressforOndine.HepburnisoneofonlythreeactressestoreceiveaBestActressOscarandBestActressTonyinthesameyear(theothertwobeingShirleyBoothandEllenBurstyn).

Bythemid1950s,HepburnwasnotonlyoneofthebiggestmotionpicturestarsinHollywood,butalsoamajorfashionicon.Hergamineandelfinappearanceandwidelyrecognizedsenseofchicwerebothadmiredandimitated.In1955,shewasawardedtheGoldenGlobe-WorldFilmFavorite-Female.

HavingbecomeoneofHollywood'smostpopularbox-officeattractions,AudreyHepburnco-starredwithmajoractorssuchasHumphreyBogartinSabrina,FredAstaireinFunnyFace,MauriceChevalierandGaryCooperinLoveintheAfternoon,GeorgePeppardinBreakfastatTiffany's,CaryGrantinthecriticallyacclaimedhitCharade,RexHarrisoninMyFairLady,PeterO'TooleinHowtoStealaMillion,andSeanConneryinRobinandMarian.Manyoftheseleadingmenbecameveryclosetoher.RexHarrisoncalledAudreyhisfavouriteleadinglady(manyaccountsindicatethatshebecamegreatfriendswithBritishactressanddancerKayKendall,whowasHarrison'swife);CaryGrantlovedtohumorherandoncesaid,"allIwantforChristmasisanotherpicturewithAudreyHepburn;"andGregoryPeckbecamealifelongfriend.Afterherdeath,Peckwentoncameraandtearfullyrecitedherfavoritepoem,"UnendingLove"byRabindranathTagore.SomebelieveBogartandHepburndidnotgetalong,butthisisuntrue.BogartgotalongbetterwithHepburnthananyoneelseonset.Shelatersaid,"Sometimesit'stheso-called'toughguys'thatarethemosttenderhearted,asBogeywaswithme."

FunnyFacein1957wasoneofHepburn'sfavoritemoviestofilmbecauseshegottodancewithFredAstaire.1959'sTheNun'sStorywasoneofhermostdaringroles.FilmsinReviewstated,"herperformancewillforeversilencethosewhohavethoughtherlessanactressthanasymbolofthesophisticatedchild/woman.HerportrayalofSisterLukeisoneofthegreatperformancesofthescreen."

Hepburn'sHollyGolightlyin1961'sBreakfastatTiffany'sbecameaniconiccharacterin20thCenturyAmericancinema.Shecalledtherole,"thejazziestofmycareer."Askedabouttheactingchallengeoftherole,shereplied,"I'manintrovert.PlayingtheextrovertedgirlwasthehardestthingIeverdid."SheworetrendyclothinginthefilmdesignedbyherandGivenchyandaddedblondestreakstoherbrownhair,alookthatshewouldkeepoff-screenaswell.

HepburnhadestablishedherselfasoneofHollywood'smostpopularactresses.MarilynMonroewasnottheonlyonetosing"HappyBirthday,Mr.President"toPresidentJohnFKennedyonhisbirthday.ForKennedy'snext(andlast)birthdayonMay29,1963,Hepburn,thePresident'sfavouriteactress,sang"HappyBirthday,dearJack"tohim.Despiteherstardom,Hepburnretainedherhumility.Shepreferredamorequietlivingwithfamilyandnature.Shelivedinhouses,notmansions,andshelovedtogarden.

HepburninascenefromthecomicthrillerCharade(1963).

In1963,HepburnstarredinCharade,herfirstandonlyfilmwithCaryGrant,whohadpreviouslywithdrawnfromthestarringrolesinRomanHolidayandSabrina.In1964,HepburnstarredinMyFairLadywhichwassaidtobethemostanticipatedmoviesinceGonewiththeWind.HepburnwascastasElizaDoolittleinsteadofthen-unknownJulieAndrews,whohadoriginatedtheroleonBroadway.ThedecisionnottocastAndrewswasmadebeforeHepburnwaschosen.HepburninitiallyrefusedtheroleandaskedJackWarnertogiveittoAndrews,butwheninformedthatitwouldeitherbeherorElizabethTaylor,whowasalsovyingforthepart,sheacceptedtherole.AccordingtoanarticleinSoundstagemagazine,"everyoneagreedthatifJulieAndrewswasnottobeinthefilm,AudreyHepburnwastheperfectchoice."JulieAndrewshadyettomakeMaryPoppins,whichwasreleasedwithinthesameyearasMyFairLady.Hepburnrecordedsingingvocalsfortherole,butsubsequentlydiscoveredaprofessional"singingdouble"MarniNixonhadoverdubbedallofhersongs.Shewalkedoffthesetafterbeingtold,butreturnedearlythenextdaytoapologizeforherbehavior.FootageofseveralsongswithHepburn'soriginalvocalsstillexistandhavebeenincludedindocumentariesandtheDVDreleaseofthefilm,thoughtodate,onlyNixon'srenditionshavebeenreleasedonLPandCD.Someofheroriginalvocalsremainedinthefilm,suchas"JustYouWait"andsnippetsfrom"ICouldHaveDancedAllNight."Whenaskedaboutthedubbingofanactresswithsuchdistinctivevocaltones,Hepburnfrownedandsaid,"youcouldtell,couldn'tyou?AndtherewasRex,recordingallhissongsasheacted...nexttime-"Shethenbitherliptokeepfromsayinganymore.Asidefromthedubbing,manycriticsagreedthatHepburn'sperformancewasexcellent.GeneRinggoldsaid,"AudreyHepburnismagnificent.SheisElizafortheages."

ThecontroversyoverHepburn'scastingreacheditsheightatthe1964-65AcademyAwardsseason,whenHepburnwasnotnominatedforbestactresswhileAndrewswas,forMaryPoppins.Themediatriedtoplayuptherivalrybetweenthetwoactressesastheceremonyapproached,eventhoughbothwomendeniedanysuchbadfeelingsexistedandgotalongwell.JulieAndrewswontheaward.

TwofortheRoadwasanon-linearandinnovativemovieaboutdivorce.DirectorStanleyDonensaidthatHepburnwasmorefreeandhappythanhehadeverseenher,andhecreditedthattoAlbertFinney.WaitUntilDarkin1967wasadifficultfilm.ItwasanedgythrillerinwhichHepburnplayedthepartofablindwomanbeingterrorized.Inaddition,itwasproducedbyMelFerrerandfilmedonthebrinkoftheirdivorce.Hepburnissaidtohavelost15poundsunderthestress.Onthebrightside,shefoundco-starRichardCrennatobeveryfunny,andshehadalottolaughaboutwithdirectorTerenceYoung.Theybothjokedthathehadshelledhisfavoritestar23yearsbefore;hehadbeenaBritishArmytankcommanderduringtheBattleofArnhem.Hepburn'sperformancewasnominatedforanAcademyAward.

From1967onward,afterfifteenhighlysuccessfulyearsinfilm,Hepburnactedonlyoccasionally.AfterherdivorcefromFerrer,shemarriedItalianpsychiatristDr.AndreaDottiandhadasecondson,afteradifficultpregnancythatrequirednear-totalbedrest.AfterhereventualseparationfromDotti,sheattemptedacomeback,co-starringwithSeanConneryintheperiodpieceRobinandMarianin1976,whichwasmoderatelysuccessful.Shereportedlyturneddownthetailor-maderoleofaformerballerinainTheTurningPoint.(ShirleyMacLainegotthepart.)Hepburnfinallyreturnedtocinemain1979,takingtheleadingroleinSidneySheldon'sBloodline.AuthorSidneySheldonrevisedhisnovelwhenitwasreissuedtotieintothefilm,makinghercharacteroldertobettermatchtheactress'age.Thefilmwasacriticalandboxofficefailure.

Hepburn'slaststarringroleinacinematicfilmwaswithBenGazzarainthecomedyTheyAllLaughed,directedbyPeterBogdanovich.Thefilmwasovershadowedbythemurderofoneofitsstars,Bogdanovich'sgirlfriend,DorothyStratten;thefilmwasreleasedafterStratten'sdeathbutonlyinlimitedruns.In1987,sheco-starredwithRobertWagnerinatongue-in-cheekmade-for-televisioncaperfilm,LoveAmongThieveswhichborrowedelementsfromseveralofHepburn'sfilms,mostnotablyCharadeandHowtoStealaMillion.TheTV-film,whichalsostarredJerryOrbachasavillain,wasonlyamoderatesuccess,withHepburnbeingquotedthatsheappearedinitjustforfun.

Hepburnatagefifty-nineinAlways

Hepburn'slastfilmrole,acameoappearance,wasanangelinStevenSpielberg'sAlways,filmedin1988.Thisfilmwasalsoonlymoderatelysuccessful.Inthefinalmonthsofherlife,Hepburncompletedtwoentertainment-relatedprojects:shehostedatelevisiondocumentaryseriesentitledGardensoftheWorldwithAudreyHepburn,whichdebutedonPBSthedayofherdeath,andshealsorecordedaspokenwordalbum,AudreyHepburn'sEnchantedTalesfeaturingreadingsofclassicchildren'sstories,whichwouldwinheraposthumousGrammyAwardforBestSpokenWordAlbumforChildren.

ShehasastarontheHollywoodWalkofFameat1652VineStreet.

Marriages,family,andlaterlife

Intheearly1950sshewasengagedtotheyoungJamesHanson.Shecalledit"loveatfirstsight;"however,afterhavingherweddingdressfittedandthedateset,shedecidedthemarriagewouldnotwork,becauseofthedemandsoftheircareersthatwouldkeepthemapartmostofthetime.

Hepburnmarriedtwice,firsttoAmericanactorMelFerrer,andthentoanItaliandoctor,AndreaDotti.Shehadasonwitheach—Seanin1960byFerrer,andLucain1970byDotti.Hereldestson'sgodfatheristhenovelist,.Cronin,whoresidednearHepburninLucerne.

HepburnmetMelFerreratapartyhostedbyGregoryPeck.ShehadseenhiminthefilmLiliandwascaptivatedbyhisperformance.FerrerlatersentHepburnthescriptfortheplayOndineandHepburnagreedtoplaytherole.RehearsalsstartedinJanuary1954andHepburnandFerrerweremarriedonSeptember24.Hepburnclaimedthattheywereinseparableandwereveryhappytogether,despitetheinsistencefromgossipcolumnsthatthemarriagewouldnotlast.Shedid,however,admitthathehadabadtemper.FerrerwasrumoredtobetoocontrollingofHepburnandwascalledherSvengali.WilliamHoldenwasquotedassaying,"IthinkAudreyallowsMeltothinkheinfluencesher."

Beforehavingtheirfirstchild,Hepburnhadtwomiscarriages,thefirstinMarchof1955.In1959,whilefilmingTheUnforgiven,shebrokeherbackafterfallingoffahorseontoarock.Shespentweeksinthehospitalandlaterhadamiscarriagethatwassaidtohavebeeninducedbyphysicalandmentalstress.Whileshewasrestingathome,MelFerrerbroughtherthefawnfromthemovieGreenMansionstokeepasapet.TheycalledhimIp,shortforPippin.In1965,shehadanothermiscarriage.HepburnwasmuchmorecarefulwhenshewaspregnantwithLucain1969;sherestedformonthsandpassedthetimebypaintingbeforedeliveringLucabycaesareansection.Hepburnhadherfinalmiscarriagein1974.Hepburnisfamousforthepoem"TimeTestedBeautyTips",whichsheusedtorecitetohersons.Thepoemincludesversessuchas,"Forbeautifulhair,letachildrunhisorherfingersthroughitonceaday",and,"Foraslimfigure,shareyourfoodwiththehungry."Thepoemispopularlyattributedtoher,butitwasinfactwrittenbySamLevenson.

Hepburnhadseveralpets,includingaYorkshireTerriernamedMr.Famous,whowashitbyacarandkilled.Tocheerherup,MelFerrergotheranotherYorkshirenamedAssamofAssam.ShealsokeptIp;theymadeabedforhimoutofabathtub.SeanFerrerhadaCockerSpanielnamedCokey.WhenHepburnwasolder,shehadtwoJackRussellTerriers.

ThemarriagetoFerrerlasted14years,until5December1968;theirsonwasquotedassayingthatHepburnhadstayedinthemarriagetoolong.Inthelateryearsofthemarriage,Ferrerwasrumoredtohavehadagirlfriendontheside,whileHepburnwasrumouredtohavehadanaffairwithheryoungerTwofortheRoadco-starAlbertFinney.Shedeniedtherumours,butdirectorStanleyDonensaid,"withAlbertFinney,shewaslikeanewwoman.SheandAlbiehaveawonderfulthingtogether;theyarelikeacoupleofkids.WhenMelwasn'tonset,theysparkled.WhenMelwasthere,itwasfunny.AudreyandAlbiewouldgoratherformalandalittleawkward.Thecoupleseparatedbeforedivorcing.Duringtheirseparation,Hepburnlostweight.ShemetItalianpsychiatristAndreaDottionacruiseandfellinlovewithhimonatriptosomeGreekruins.Shebelievedshewouldhavemanychildren,andpossiblystopworking.Shemarriedhimon18January1969.AlthoughDottilovedHepburnandwaswell-likedbySean,whocalledhim"fun",Dottihadaffairswithyoungerwomen.Themarriagelasted13yearsandendedin1982,afterLucaandSeanwereoldenoughtohandlelifewithasinglemother.ThoughHepburnhadbrokenoffallcontactwithFerrer(shewouldonlyspeaktohimtwiceintheremainderofherlife;atSean'sgraduationandfirstwedding),sheremainedintouchwithDottiforthebenefitofLuca.

Atthetimeofherdeath,shewasinvolvedwithRobertWolders,ahandsomeDutchactorwhowasthewidoweroffilmstarMerleOberon.ShehadmetWoldersthroughafriend,inthelaterstageofhermarriagetoDotti.AfterHepburn'sdivorcewasfinal,sheandWoldersstartedtheirlivestogether,althoughtheynevermarried.In1989,afternineyearswithhim,shecalledthemthehappiestyearsofherlife."Tookmelongenough",shesaidinaninterviewwithBarbaraWalters.Waltersthenaskedwhytheynevermarried.Hepburnrepliedthattheyweremarried,justnotformally.TheyplannedUNICEFtripstogether.Ateveryoneofherspeeches,hewouldwatchandsometimesshedtears.

WorkforUNICEF

SoonafterHepburn'sfinalfilmrole,shewasappointedaspecialambassadortotheUnitedNationsChildren'sFund(UNICEF).GratefulforherowngoodfortuneafterenduringtheGermanoccupationasachild,shededicatedtheremainderofherlifetohelpingimpoverishedchildreninthepoorestnations.Hepburn'stravelsweremadeeasierbyherwideknowledgeoflanguages;shespokeFrench,Italian,English,Dutch,andSpanish.

ThoughshehaddoneworkforUNICEFinthe1950s,startingin1954withradiopresentations,thiswasamuchhigherlevelofdedication.Thoseclosetohersaythatthethoughtsofdying,helplesschildrenconsumedherfortherestofherlife.HerfirstFieldMissionwastoEthiopiain1988.ShevisitedanorphanageinMek'elethathoused500starvingchildrenandhadUNICEFsendfood.Ofthetrip,shesaid,"Ihaveabrokenheart.Ifeeldesperate.Ican'tstandtheideathattwomillionpeopleareinimminentdangerofstarvingtodeath,manyofthemchildren,[and][sic]notbecausethereisn'ttonsoffoodsittinginthenorthernportofShoa.Itcan'tbedistributed.Lastspring,RedCrossandUNICEFworkerswereorderedoutofthenorthernprovincesbecauseoftwosimultaneouscivilwars...Iwentintorebelcountryandsawmothersandtheirchildrenwhohadwalkedfortendays,eventhreeweeks,lookingforfood,settlingontothedesertfloorintomakeshiftcampswheretheymaydie.Horrible.Thatimageistoomuchforme.The'ThirdWorld'isatermIdon'tlikeverymuch,becausewe'realloneworld.Iwa
