"Itwasarealcombinationoflowsolaractivityandthesatellite'srange,"Hellissaid."Wedidn'texpecttobeabletolookatthetopoftheionosphereinallplaces."Computermodelsbasedonpreviousresearchhadpredictedtheionospheretobeabout370milesaboveEarthatnightandabout620milesupduringtheday--thevariationduetotemperatureandotherfactors.
