BackgroundinformationEuroDisneyland:anextremelylargeamusementpark,runbytheWaltDisneyCompany,justoutsideParisinFrance.ItisbasedonDisneylandandDisneyworldintheUS.
themepark:Alsoknownasamusementpark,itisanoutdoorareacontainingamusements,suchasgamesofskillandbigmachinestorideon,whicharesometimesallbasedonasinglesubject,forexample,spacetravel.ThefirstthemeparkwasDisneyland,atAnaheim,California,openedin1955andbasedonWaltDisney’scartooncharacters.TGV:Thename“TrainàGrandeVitesse(TGV)”translatedintoEnglishmeanshighspeedtrain.TheTGVisasystemwhichcomprisestrain,track,andsignallingtechnologiesthatwhencombinedmakehighspeeds(typically300km/h,or186mph)possible.TheTGVsystemisownedandoperatedbySNCF,theFrenchnationalrailways,andisanintegralpartofFrenchrailtravel.TheTGVprogramwaslaunchedinthelate1960s.Initsearlystages,theprogramwasconsideredatechnologicaldeadend.Conventionalwisdomatthetimeheldthatsteelwheelonsteelrailtechnologyhadbeenexploredandunderstoodtoitsfullest,anditwastimetomoveontomoreinnovativetechnologieslikemagneticlevitationandjet-poweredhovertrains.Asaresult,theprojectdidnotoriginallyreceiveanygovernmentfunding.Today,therearethreemajortrunklinesradiatingoutofParis,themostrecentonebeingtheNord-Europeline,openedin1993andconnectsParistoLille,Belgium,theNetherlands,Germany,andBritainthroughtheChanneltunnel.
Extensionscontinuetobebuilt,althoughbudgetaryconstraintshaveslowedthemomentumoftheTGVexpansion.SleepingBeauty:afairy-taleheroinewhosleptfor100yearsuntilwakenedbythekissofaprince.SnowWhite:themaincharacterinanoldfairytale.Snowwhiteisabeautifulprincesswhohasajealousstepmother.Thestepmotherownsamagicmirrorwhichwhenasked“Mirror,mirror,onthewall,whoisthefairestofusall?”alwaysanswersthatsheisthemostbeautiful,untilonedayitsays“SnowWhite”.ThestepmotherisveryangryandsendsSnowWhiteintotheforesttobekilled.SnowWhitedoesnotdie,butfindsandliveswithsevenDwarfs.Herstepmothertriestokillherwithapoisonedapple,butinsteadofdyingshegoestosleepuntilaprincekissesherandwakesher,andtheylivehappilyeverafter.PeterPan:themaincharacterinastorytitledPeterandWendybyJamesM.Barrie(Scottishplaywrightandnovelist,1860—1937),ayoungboywhonevergrowsupbutlivesinamagiclandcalledNever-neverLand.Inthestory,threechildren,Michael,John,andWendy,gowithPeterPanandTinkerbelltostayintheNever-NeverLand,wheretheyhavemanyadventures.PeterPan’senemyinthestoryisCaptainHook,anevilpiratewhohasametalhookintheplaceofoneofhishands.CaptainHooklosthishandinafightwithPeterPan,andPeterPanthrewthehandintosomewater.
Itwaseatenbyacrocodile,wholikedthetastesomuchthatitthenfollowedCaptainHookaroundtryingtocatchandeattherestofhim.Pinocchio:Theinternationalclassicofchildhoodliterature“Pinocchio”waswrittenbyCarloLorenzini(Italianjournalistandwriter,1826—1890),underthepennameofC.Collodi,andfirstpublishedinRomein1881.ItsheroPinocchioisthelittlewoodenpuppetwhowalksandtalks,andwhosenosegrowseverytimehetellsalie.MickeyMouse:MickeyMouseisprobablythemostfamousoftheDisneycartooncharacters.Makinghisdebutin“SteamboatWillie”attheColonyTheatreinNewYorkCityonNovember18,1928,Mickeywentontostarinover120differentcartoons.Healsostarredin“TheMickeyMouseClub”televisionshowofthe1950s.MickeyMouse’soriginaldrawingsusedcirclesforhishead,bodyandears.
1939's“ThePointer”sawabold,newdesignforMickeyashisbodybecamemorepear-shapedandpupilswereaddedtohiseyestoincreasehisrangeofexpression.Lateron,animatorsofthe1940swouldaddaperspectiveaspecttohisears,givingthemathree-dimensionaleffect.Thischange,however,wasshort-lived.TheMickeyMouseoftodayappearsmuchashedidintheearlydayswiththeexceptionofacostumechangehereandthere.
Originally,MickeywasvoicedbyWaltDisneyhimself.Later,thosedutieswereassumedbyJimMacdonaldandtodayWayneAllwineprovidesMickey’sdistinctivevoice.
MickeyMousehasappearedonthousandsofmerchandiseitems,andcurrentlyholdstheesteemedtitleofChiefGreeterattheDisneythemeparks.
MagicKingdominCalifornia:thenameofathemeparksometimesusedinsteadofDisneylandinCalifornia.WaltDisneyWorldinFlorida:averylargeamusementparkopenedin1971,featuringmanyofthecharactersfromDisneyfilms.BothDisneylandandDisneyworldareverypopularholidayplacesfortourists,especiallythosewithchildren.JulesVerne(1828—1905):HewasaFrenchwriterandapioneerofthesciencefictiongenre.HismostfamousbooksareJourneytotheCentreoftheEarth,TwentyThousandLeaguesUndertheSea,andAroundtheWorldinEightyDays.VernewasborninNantestoattorneyPierreVerneandhiswifeSophie.Theoldestofthefamily'sfivechildren,hespenthisearlyyearsathomewithhisparents,onanearbyislandintheLoireRiver.
ThisisolatedsettinghelpedtostrengthenbothhisimaginationandthebondbetweenhimandhisyoungerbrotherPaul.Attheageofnine,heandhisyoungerbrotherweresenttoboardingschoolattheNanteslycée.Verne’sfascinationwithadventureasserteditselfatanearlyage,inspiringhimatonepointtostowawayonashipboundfortheOrient.Hisvoyagewascutshort,however,ashefoundhisfatherwaitingforhimatthenextport.
Aftercompletinghisstudiesatthelycée,VernewenttoParistostudyforthebar.About1848,inconjunctionwithMichelCarre,hebeganwritinglibrettosforoperettas.Forsomeyearshisattentionsweredividedbetweenthetheatreandwork,butsometravellers’storieswhichhewrotefortheMuséedesFamiliesseemtohaverevealedtohimthetruedirectionofhistalent:thetellingofdelightfullyextravagantvoyagesandadventurestowhichcleverlypreparedscientificandgeographicaldetailslentanairofverisimilitude.
WhenVerne’sfatherdiscoveredthathissonwaswritingratherthanstudyingthelaw,hepromptlywithdrewhisfinancialsupport.Consequently,theauthorwasforcedtosupporthimselfwiththeincomefromhiswork,whichhefoundtobeadifficultpropositionwithhislimitedcontacts.Duringthisperiod,hemettheauthorsAlexandreDumasandVictorHugo,whoofferedhimsomeadviceonhiswriting.
ItwasduringthisperiodthatVernemetandmarriedHonorineMorel,awidowwithtwodaughters.Athisfather’surging,Vernetookajobasastockbroker,thoughwithhiswife’sencouragementhecontinuedtowrite.In1861hisson,MichelJeanPierreVerne,wasborn.Verne’ssituationimprovedwhenhemetPaulHetzel,apublisherspecializinginbooksforyoungpeople.HetzelreadadraftofVerne’sstoryabouttheballoonexplorationofAfrica,whichhadbeenrejectedbyotherpublishersonthegroundthatitwas“tooscientific”.WithHetzel’shelp,Vernerewrotethestoryandin1862itwaspublishedinHetzel’sownMagazind’EducationasCinqsemainesenballon(FiveWeeksinaBalloon).Thestorywasanenormoussuccess,andwasrepublishedinanumberoflanguages.Vernebecamewealthyandfamous.Fromthatpointon,andfornearlyaquarterofacentury,scarcelyayearpassedinwhichHetzeldidnotpublishoneormoreofhisstories.Themostsuccessfuloftheseinclude:Voyageaucentredelaterre(JourneytotheCenteroftheEarth,1864);Delaterreàlalune(FromtheEarthtotheMoon,1865);VingtMilleLieuessouslesmers(20,000LeaguesUndertheSea,1869);andLetourdumondeenquatre-vingtsjours(AroundtheWorldinEightyDays),whichfirstappearedinLeTempsin1872.
VernediedatAmiens.Hisbrother,PaulVerne,contributedtotheTransactionsoftheFrenchAlpineClub,andtohisbrother'scollectionofVoyagesExtraordinairesin1874.TheLouvreartmuseum:themostfamousFrenchmuseumofartlocatedinParisandhasmanyimportantpaintings,includingtheMonaLisa
MinnieMouse:acartooncharacter,afemalemousewhoisthepartnerofMickeyMouse.MonaLisa:(alsoMonnaLisa;Italian,LaGioconda;French,LaJoconde)byLeonardodaVinci,isperhapsthemostfamouspaintingintheworld,goingsofarastobeiconicofpainting,art,andevenvisualimagesingeneral.Nootherworkofartissoromanticized,celebrated,orreproduced.
Thework,whichwasaccomplishedbetween1503and1506,measures77x53cmandisanoilpaintingonwood.ItwasbroughttoFrancebyLeonardowhenKingFrancoisIinvitedthegreatpaintertoworkattheClosLucéneartheking’schateauinAmboise.Asaresult,theMonaLisatodayhangsintheLouvreinParis,andisthemuseum’sstarattraction.
Theidentityoftheladyinthepaintingisnotknownforcertain,exceptthatshewasawealthyFlorentine.ThemostprobablesuspectisMadonnaLisadelGiocondo.Althoughitisdefinitelydifficulttoviewthepaintingcriticallyandignoreallthemythologybehindit,itdoesdisplayatechnicalmasterythatmoreorlessunquestionablyseatsitamongstLeonardo'smasterworks(althoughsomecountTheLastSupperasagreaterwork).Thecompellingnatureoftheimagehasbeenthesubjectofreamsofdiscussion.Ingeneral,itcanbestatedthatthevividnessandambiguityofthefacialexpressionisduetoLeonardo'suseofsfumato(atermcoinedbyLeonardodaVincitorefertoapaintingtechniquewhichoverlaystranslucentlayersofcolorstocreateperceptionsofdepth,volumeandform),blurringthemostexpressiveportionsoftheface(thecornersoftheeyesandmouth)togivethepicturegreatermystery.
Indeed,theeyesappeartofollowthevieweraroundtheroom,andtheenigmaticsmileisthepicture'smostfamousfeature(givingustheexpression,“aMonaLisasmile”).Thepaintingwasalsooneofthefirstportraitstodepictthesitterbeforeanimaginarylandscape.Oneinterestingfeatureofthelandscapeisthatitisuneven.Thelandscapetotheleftofthefigureisnoticeablylowerthanthattotherightofher.Thishasledsomecriticstosuggestthatitwasaddedlater.
Thepaintinghasbeenrestorednumeroustimes:unfortunately,severaldetailshavebeenlostintheprocess,includingLisa'seyebrowsand(possibly)apearlnecklaceshewaswearing.OnAugust22,1911,LouvreemployeeVincenzoPeruggia,whoatfirstbelievedtheItalianpaintingbelongedtoItalyandshouldn’tbekeptinFrance,stolethepaintingbysimplywalkingoutthedoorwithithiddenunderhiscoat.
However,greedgotthebetterofhimandtheMonaLisawasnotreturnedtotheLouvreuntil1913whenPeruggiaattemptedtosellittoaFlorenceartdealer.
