ThisisafairytalewhosedistributionvolumeisonlysecondtoTheBible.It’sbeentranslatedtoversionsofmanyotherlanguages.AndIgathertheremustbesomethingspecial,somethingreallygreataboutit.It’sthisconvictionthatdrovemetoreaditatthefirstbeginning.Well,withduerespecttotheauthor,Ifailedtoseehowthisfairytalebeworthyofourattention,despitethefactthatmanyreadersclaimedthisbooktobedesignedforadults.
Anyway,asawell-acknowledgedbook,itmustpossessuniquefeaturetomaintainit’sposition.Andit’sreputationandpopularitywillbynomeansbedestroyedbywhatanunknownmansays.Iwilltalkaboutthemaincontentsofthebook,andtheinspirationitrendersasusual.
Thisbookmainlytellsustheexperienceofaprincefromatinyplanet,whotraveledtomanyotherplanetsandfinallycametotheearthandmetthepilotinadesert.Theprinceandthepilotbecamegoodfriends,andthepilotgraduallygottoknowthefeelingandexperienceofhisfriend.Beforehecametotheearth,littleprincehadbeentoother6littleplanetswherehemadeacquaintancewithsomestrangepeople.Thefirstmanhemetwasakingonalittleplanet,yetheclaimedtobethekingofthespaceandridiculouslyjustifiedhisunshakablegovernanceoverall.Thesecondpersonwasamanofvanity,whoenjoyedcomplimentsofanyformwithoutconsideringwhetherit’ssincereornot.Thethirdpersonwasanalcoholicwhotriedtoforgetthefactthathe’saddictedtoacoholbydrinkinglikeafish.Thefourthpersonwasanabosolutemoney-orientedbusinessman,whocarednothingbuthisfortune.Nextcamethelamp-lighterwhoperformedhisdutyblindly.Thelastonewasageographerwhoknewtoomuchaboutgeographytosolvearealproblemrelatedtoit.Thesesixpeopleeachrepresentedonekindofpersonlikeus.Theauthorsatirizedpeople’sconceit,emptiness,fakeness,innocenceandblindnessthroughthetoneofachild.
Iseeeyetoeyewiththeauthorinthatthecauseofpeople’slonelinesscanbeconcludedtothenegligenceofthebondsthatconnectsthem.Peoplearesupposedtocareabouteachother,cherishwhat’sreallyimportantforthem,andbegratefulforthehappinessthatthey’vegained.Weallbelieveknowledgeandexperienceenableustoseeclearlyandmakerightjudgementsallthetime.Butwemaysometimeslosetherighttospeakstraighforwardly,thinkcreativelyorlovecourageouslyresultingfromwhatwe’veexperienced.Thatwhyinourmiddleschooltextbooks,it’sthelittlekidthatbreakstheillusionoftheemperorbysaying”butmum,heain’twereanything”.
WhenIwasachild,Iwasdefinitelyagoodboywhowenthomeontimeafterschoolanddidhishomeworkandnevertriedanythingwithoutmom’spermission.AndnowIamagrown-up,andstillIamagoodman,atleast,that’swhatIheard.SometimeswhenIwaslonelyandIbegantothinkaboutmychildhood,thenallthehappinessandcare-freelifecamebacktomeasitwereyesterday.KidsthatonceaccompaniedmeduringmychildhoodnowbecomefathersandmothersoftheirkidsandImyselfamachildnomore.Thinkingaboutallthesethingshavemadememoody.There’rechangeshappeninginourliveswhetherwearehappyaboutitornot.
Peopletoldmelifeisajourneywhichwillneverstoponceit’sstarted.What’sleftbehindarehappinessandsorrow,prideandshame,successandregret.There’sgoodoldtimetoreminisceandthere’ssadhoursthatremindsusofthepain.Yourfeelingmakesthemreal,andyouknowyoulived.
Iwanttoconcludebysayingsomepositivewordsthateachyestersdayusedtobetoday,andeachtodayisthefutureofyesterday,somakingthemostoftodayisthebestwaytocherishyourlives.Ourmortalbeingsaredoomedtodie.It’snotsad,instead,deathit’sjustaprocessofourlives.Afterall,we’velivedourlivesandit’swhatwedoandhowwethinkthatdeterminewhoweare.

Recently,Ireadafairystorybook,LittlePrince.Thisbooktellstheadventurousexperiencesoflittleprincefromhisplanettotheearth.Littleprincecomesfromtheouterspaceandheishurtbyarose.Soheleavesthereandtravelsintospace.Hecomestotheearthandbethefriendofafox.Thefoxtellshissecrettolittleprinceandhehelpsapilotinthedesert.Intheend,hediesunderthehelpofasnakeandhissoulgoesbacktohisplanet.Thisbookisveryinterestingandteachesmealot.Ilikelittlepriceadventures.Heteachesmetobehonestandloveothers.Allofusshouldneverlossthepurenessofchildhood.

OncewhenIwassixyearsold,Isawamagnificentpictureinabook,calledTrueStoriesfromNature,abouttheprimevalforest.Itwasapictureofaboaconstrictorintheactofswallowingananimal.Hereisacopyofthedrawing.
Inthebookitsaid:Boaconstrictorsswallowtheirpreywhole,withoutchewingit.Afterthattheyarenotabletomove,andtheysleepthroughthesixmonthsthattheyneedfordigestion.
Ipondereddeeply,then,overtheadventuresofthejungle.AndaftersomeworkwithacoloredpencilIsucceededinmakingmyfirstdrowing,MyDrawingNumberOne.Itlookedlikethis:
Ishowedmymasterpiecetothegrown-ups,andaskedthemwhetherthedrawingfrightenedthem.
Buttheyanswered:Frighten?Whyshouldanyonebefrightenedbyahat?
Mydrawingwasnotapictureofahat.Itwasapictureofaboaconstrictordigestinganelephant.Butsincethegrown-upswerenotabletounderstandit,Imadeanotherdrawing:Idrewtheinsideoftheboaconstrictor,sothatthegrown-upscouldseeitclearly.Theyalwaysneedtohavethingsexplained.MyDrawingNumberTwolookedlikethis:
Thegrown-upsresponse,thistime,wastoadvisemetolayasidemydrawingofboaconstrictors,whetherfromtheinsideortheoutsideanddevotemyselfinsteadtogeography,history,arithmeticandgrammar.Thatiswhy,attheageofsix,Igaveupwhatmighthavebeenamagnificentcareerasapainter.IhadbeendisheartenedbythefailureofmyDrawingNumberOneandmyDrawingNumberTwo.Grown-upsneverunderstandanythingbythemselves,anditsitiresomeforchildrentobealwaysandforeverexplainingthingstothem.
SothenIchoseanotherprofession,andlearnedtopilotairplanes.
Ihaveflownalittleoverallpartsoftheworld:anditisturethatgeographyhasbeenveryusefultome.AtaglanceIcandistinguishChinafromArizona.Ifonegetslostinthenight,suchknowledgeisvaluable.
InthecourseofthislifeIhavehadagreatmanyencounterswithagreatmanypeoplewhohavebeenconcernedwithmattersofconsequence.Ihavelivedagreatdealamonggrown-ups.Ihaveseenthemintimately,closeathand.Andhasntmuchimprovedmyopinionofthem.
WheneverImetoneofthemwhoseemedtomeatallclearsighted,ItriedtheexperimentofshowinghimmyDrowingNumberOne.whichIhavealwayskept.Iwouldtrytofindout,so,ifthiswasapersonoftrueunderstanding.But,whoeveritwas,he,orshe,wouldalwayssay:
Thatisahat.
ThenIwouldnevertalktothatpeopleaboutboaconstrictors,orprimevalforest,orstars.Iwouldbringmyselfdowntohislevel.Iwouldtalktohimaboutbridge,andgolf,andpolitics,andneckties.Andthegrown-upswouldbegreatlypleasedtohavemetsuchasensibleman.
